- This is a grouping of rattle songs from Ulali's first album, Mahk Jchi (1996). Enjoy!
I have a selection of photos running from many of the well known Chiefs to actual photos from Elk Ridge and "The Hostile Camp". Indians relaxing on Custer's Bluff and a re-enactment of Wounded Knee. Early gold miners in 1889 to Wild Bill Hickok's grave marker. If you'd like info on any of the photos used I would be happy to try to help.

Rattles have always had a great part in the spiritual connection with the creator as well as for use in public gatherings. It is said that the rattles symbolize the animal, plant, and mineral kingdoms. The animal kingdom is exemplified in the form of the container or decorative feather of the rattle. The mineral kingdom is represented by the rocks that create the sound or also by the paint used for the artwork depicted on the rattle. And, the plant kingdom is symbolized by the handle.
Native American rattles are made with a number of natural materials such as turtle shell, leather, rawhide, bead work and Native American feathers. Fur, fringe, seeds, rocks, antlers, horns, bones and shells are used to create that unique Indian style. Clay beads, blue corn, manzanita seeds or small smooth stones such as those found at the opening of an ant hill, are also sometimes put in the rattles to give it the desired sound.

When the English banned the playing of bagpipes, calling it an instrument of war, the Scots would pass down the traditional pipe tunes by singing them.

In the Disarming Act of 1746 bagpipes weren't banned. This was covered by John Gibson in his book 'Traditional Gaelic Bagpiping 1745-1945'. What is called 'mouth music' is thought to have originated long before 1746, and used when instruments weren't available.

A nice video, but these are eastern style rattle songs; Pura Fe' and Jennifer are Tuscarora women. It would have been beautiful to showcase their people and other eastern seaboard people who these songs come from. Plains folk are often deemed the physical standard of looking indigenous; for us natives on the east coast and woodlands we have a different look.

This is a beautiful series of songs. I saw the movie smoke signals some years ago, loved the combination of the poem how do we forgive our fathers and wah jhi le yim and stumbled upon ulali's album. I do not see how you could dislike this or I do, but I would prefer just to revel in the fact that I love it. I wish I could find the ulali album version of Makh jchi on you tube.
