I have danced for 4 days and nights fasting in the sacred sundance altar for 16 times. Sundance has always been my entire life. I'm so fortunate to have had Martin High Bear as my mentor so many decades ago in these ways. Martin was color blind, in that he loved people of all colors. Very gentle, traditional medicine man, an authentic healer and sundance chief.

I have not been allowed to even witness the ceremony. I have known since I was 3 years old that I was one of the people. I have never had a mentor, I had to learn all things on my own. I see everyone as a reflection, and have become color blind, as a result. I would love to spend the rest of my life with “The People”. I could then be truly at peace.

My dad runs a Sundance, he drinks heavily through the year and only sobers up with enough time to run it. I stopped going because of that, and its hurt me spiritually. I haven't been able to find one on my own because I dont have the connections. I miss these songs. I dream of them and hear them in my head when I'm struggling. I grew up with these songs, I think this video is a gift. I've gone too long without hearing these ceremonial songs and my life lacks without them. Thank you for this video.

hi Miranda .The songs keep me here and I read your words and listen to your heart. My father was a alcholoic too .He tought me a great deal about our history. Many people took him serious annd many did not because of his drinking.I use to take the bus when i was little just to get away and would find myself at pow wows.I was 11 at the time. The drum callled me then the songs come with it.Follow your heart little one.

Miranda.....I saw you here, and your message moved me, so I wanted to say, I hope you find someone else to do the Ceremony for you, like , where does David Swallow Jr. do the Ceremony?? Try to get get connected with him and Nyla Helper....Pray that your dad is able to give up the bottle...

    • @timmccarthy3034

Miranda...I just thought of something John Trudell said about the "drunken Indian".....being the one thing responsible for the Native American culture and way of life being preserved and protected for future generations.....It's because of THEM.....who came out of a very hard time....(your dad's generation)...because they REFUSED TO BECOME "WHITE"....even though they were told they could "not be Indian"........so , they decided to just wear a "disguise"...a "mask", just to get by , to do their time, and not ever give in to the white man's ways....of thinking , and doing, so they had only the alcohol to keep them going, it was a way of preserving their identity......I met a few of the older Natives who were from that generation, Vietnam vets... hard core drinkers to be sure....but at the same time, they are/ were some of the most beautiful and strong hearted, generous, kind, loving people on this Earth ....So, don't feel bad about your Dad..Try to understand why the drinking was the only way he could deal with the pain of the abusive system that he had to fight so hard against for so many years .....He did it for you.......so you could have the "real culture" for yourself, and your own kids to follow you, even if he was not able to live that kind of a Spiritual life as a younger man...He runs the Ceremony still?? If you are dreaming about it, and you hear the Songs, it means the Spirits are telling you to get to the Ceremony....so .. YOU GO, GIRL... ...You have a way to heal your own pain, and to help him with his Healing too...Don't miss that chance of a Lifetime....Life is WAY TOO SHORT ....... and to miss out on that , is a tragedy.....and you will regret it forever........

We are not of this world. So we can't be judge by by the things of this world. Your dad is a ceremonial man. He is judge by his spiritual world which is totally different from this place we are in. Prayers for him for health reason caused by drinking. Because I feel he should stick around with us longer to continue to pass these ways down.

so much drama in here, c'mon guys this is a sacred song, you all are adults, I'm only 14 and I know better than starting drama under a video that contains sacred songs, open your eyes and look at what you're doing, tunkasila gave me a dream to be a leader and my #1 role model just recently passed I don't know how to do this on my own and I'm falling off the red road but I'm still going, as a teenager it's really hard to stay on task with a bunch of adults that don't know how to keep their shit straight and show respect. the world we have today is very pitiful.

Hi Jada, Are you still there ? You must be 15 now ? I'd like to tell you your Tunkasila was right about you , that you can be a leader which is an enormous responsability and I know you must feel very lonely . But please , NEVER give up, surround yourself with trusted friends and family (you say Tiyuspaye, which is one word we express in english in many more and is only a description of the meaning) . I believe your leadership is essentially in transmitting your culture , related to your language ,dances , ceremonies and I must forget a few others . Unfortunately I live in Europe and have never seen your place, but I did in docs ... Life is tough for you , I've seen it , as I read your comment I have a feeling you are a tough girl, too ! Lots of luck to you , Jada .

Every day you walk are choices, Jada. Keep walking with good intent and with humility and eagerness to be better. the red road sometimes is wider than at other times.. and i was once told it is only as hard as you make it.. as wide and as narrow as you make it.. every day there are choices to make, and mistakes will be made..willingness to learn and to grow and help others is that good way. we all have bad days, but as long as you get up when you fall, and keep walking.. this is that life walk.

Mixing Medicine Has Created A Burden On The Sundance Nation And All The Other People Are From Outside Are Struggling As Well
If i had one wish I would wish for The Pipes to be Returned and That the Lakota Sundance Leader's Would. Go Up And Build A New Alter Away From Everything and Do What They Have Other's Do, 4 days Alone With Nothing Else Except Conversation With Creator. But sitting and waiting for other's to do this and receive information is not helping. Hynblecheya, Sundance as everyone else might have an important as a Leader Leads Others will follow. My last wish is that Creator would help them gather together and build their Families and Let The Ceremonies come back to them to help them find some Answers. @@nativechique7589 It's unfortunate, but with the way medicine is today, you almost have to fight for your health. Don't be afraid to speak up, and tell them the meds aren't working. Don't be silent. Talk. Talk. Talk. Express. Draw. Paint. Make music. Dance. Yell at the sky. I write poetry and make music. It feels good, heals. When those dark feelings run inside of you, slow down. Find a quiet place or any place where you sit up with your feet on the floor. Close your eyes, breathe in and out. AHOOooo' I grew up on these sundance songs (I am Ndeh tribe San Carlos) in the Inipi ceremonies here in California. The red road way is so beautiful, the best medicine is all the brothers of all bands, nations and even our Mexica relations singing these songs in prayer, together, united. Our community here in northern California is blessed to have so many come together in a good way, we have bear dancers, miwok roundhouse dancers, big-head kuksumoki, sundancers, Aztec dancers, all nations coming together every week and offering up these songs TOGETHER. A brother of mine who led the dance troop Aztec out here finished his 4th year sundancing and it brings so much joy to see leaders step out into our communities in this way. Much love to my Sundance family and brothers that travel with these songs, our people need to heal and UNITE. ALLLLLL MY RELATIONS! AHO.

I'm Italian, I live on the other side of the world, but in the 80's two medicine-men taught to a friend of mine the knowledge of their tradition, today this man is my guide and he's teaching me to walk the red path. I'm not a Lakota, I'm not a native American, but I feel a deep connection with the spiritual traditions of your land, not only with the native peoples of North America, but with the traditions of the people of all your continent. Do not be angry too if not natives want to learn from you, despite the difficulties you are able to keep the ancient knowledge of your ancestors, we have snatched him away, but as you Lakota say: Mitakuye Oyasin ... and it's true! !
I am deeply grateful to your people because thanks to you I have been researching and rediscovering the traditions of what was once my people and that about 2,000 years ago saw eradicate his traditions and his identity by an invader people and a religion imposed, i'm rediscovering the link with Mother Earth and all its elements, i'm rediscovering my essence. ... Listen to these sacred songs are for me a spell, even if I do not understand a word, the only vibration brings me into your world, makes me change my state of consciousness and for this I am grateful!

I pray with my Pipe almost every day and say thank you to the spirits and ancestors for all that I have received. My heart sors when I hear these song's. I remember one summer when it was so hot it was 117 in the shade. And with the fire just out side of the arbor of the rest area. And they dug holes to cool off in. I am blessed that I was adopted by my family of 3 families. I always! Ask the creator to bless all my relatives in the 4 directions amd for the 3 families that adopted my family.

If you are Native you should know better. If you are Native have an elder teach them their language. If you are not Native you have no right what so ever to order anyone to keep these songs up. If you are not Native you are showing yourself to be just another descendent of those who have taken almost everything from Native people. You want to claim everything for yourself and your children. Creator judges...it wont be pretty.

@@willaellis2914 you judge too , I hear it, the harsh sound of condemnation and doom in your voice.......you are acting JUST like the christians who tried so hard to kill off your own culture , and failed.... Still, it's not so easy now to just "get an elder to teach the kids " their language.....BTW .in regards to your little threat, as you mentioned being "judged" by Creator.........Great Spirit or "Creator"... is NOT "a judge"....that phony concept of "GOD" is a TOTALLY christian concept.....based on english court rule, and dealing with the decrees of kings, queens etc.....and the official court system that has been used for centuries to repress people and punish people......or even kill people...if those people were those who displeased the court........The Spirit World, is NOT "a place" owned and operated by Natives only...and there is NO SIGNS on the door saying "NO WHITES ALLOWED INSIDE"....The guy you were so busy putting down as if he was actually the evil Custer himself......was simply trying to state that he was getting benefit from this vid and his kids and grandkids too, as they were now learning the songs....for free.......so what is WRONG WITH THAT?WTF?? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ....that you need to come down on people like a ton of bricks? Are you so full of hate in your heart for the "white" people, that the Sun Dance has taught you NOTHING about love and forgiveness???? Forgiveness is the ONLY WAY you will be allowed to enter into the Spirit World.......so do it now, before you "go"....it's a lot easier that way...Once you leave your body, it's SO MUCH harder to change..because you cant go back and try to make right all that needs to be made right, and you cant go back to tell people you are sorry, or that you love them....once you go , it's too late for all that....That is what "hell " truly is....not being able to go back and change things for the better....it causes great suffering, great sorrow.........No judges...no BS ..no court trial......You are your own judge and jury......YOU .......walk the path of the Spirit World Journey...YOU make your own path in the Spirit World by the steps you take today and every day in this life..........Where it goes, is up to you..Because now you are free to choose......between the path of love, and the path of hate..If you have any little shreds of racist attitudes, inside your heart, you will not be allowed to enter the Spirit World in a good way..the Old Woman at the Rainbow Bridge will see it inside of you...and she will kick you off the bridge........and you will have to come back here again to get it right..

@@Serjo777 I will say only this, that in the traditional view, the way of understanding the Sacred Ways of Knowledge of many tribes, that, yes, the"Spirit lives on forever".....and, as it is told by the Elders, the Spiritual leaders, the Ceremonial leaders , and the Medicine People, they all say the same thing, in all the tribes, that, "Those who have gone on, are still here"........and, "YES ......we do go through many lives"....and that......"Death is only a transition, from one life that leads us to the next"..These are not my words, they are the exact words, the Sacred Teachings that I have heard them say, to instruct, and share , for all of us to know and understand clearly....the true reality of "Life and Death"..........The Christian way , is that "this life" , is the ONLY life we will ever get to have, and once we die, we are DONE.. ( way too harsh, too cruel, too scary , and way too judgmental , in the Native way of understanding Reality of Life and Death.. ...as the "Great Spirit" of All Life, is not an angry, vengeful, spiteful, judgmental male "God", that we need be VERY VERY afraid of)..........and so, in their way, we really do "die"..... and "that's it" for us, and after that, just like in court, we stand before the judge, where, he looks at all our deeds, etc, that he kept track of , all recorded , written down, in a very big, golden covered book, that he keeps right next to his big throne, and of course , Jesus is there too, hanging out, but saying nothing.... whereupon we are then "judged" , without mercy, and duly "sentenced", to either go off immediately, to "Heaven" , to float around on a cloud, like way, way out someplace, far, far away from the Earth, and far away all our Relatives, where we must sing praises forever and ever , with the angels, to "God", and "Jesus", etc......."forever.".........( and that is a LONG time to be singing ), etc.. , or we get sent off to "Hell"....to be burned alive in searing hot fire, and tortured by evil demons, etc...... again, "forever."...I was forced as a child, and all my youth, to go to Catholic schools, and this is what I was taught, so I am not making this up here..THIS is what they really believe is reality.....BOTH "Heaven" and "Hell", in this way of believing, actually, seem to be a rather scary, horrid , and bleak , gloomy prospect of our own eternity......and this is what we call, in the Native way , a "wrong teaching".......because it teaches us to be VERY VERY afraid, afraid of our own "Death".....afraid of our own destiny, our own reality.........Being afraid of our own Death, is like being afraid of Birth....They are just 2 sides of the same door...... What we need to know, is the "Spirit World" , and this "physical" World , are BOTH CONNECTED..like up and down, back and front, black and white, yin and yang, heads and tails...........NOT separate.....You cannot have the one without the other existing...like the Earth, and space...They " coexist", at the same time, side by side, "connected"..They are in fact, ONE EXISTENCE...I have experienced the true "Reality" of the Spirit World, after my wife went on her own Spirit World Journey..7 yrs ago.........Many times, and in many ways, she has shown to me , directly, and in amazing and remarkable ways, that she STILL LIVES ......RIGHT HERE......on the EARTH...No one ever really "dies".....just as proven modern science teaches, that all matter and energy, too, is never "lost", it only "changes from one form to another"........"Heaven" and "Hell".....are not separate places, mysteriously someplace far, far away......They are both RIGHT HERE ........ON THIS EARTH..........They are the reality of the eternal legacy we leave behind us, as we leave our own body behind....We "create" our OWN Heaven or Hell, right here , on Earth, as we live our lives, by all we think, say and do......then, we experience that "creation", as a learning tool.....and, as what we must experience...just like looking into the mirror... seeing all that we did, for good or ill, either done out of pure love and beauty, compassion, and forgiveness, or done out of greed, anger, jealousy, and violence, ( we make our own "choices" in life)...... We experience all we did, in life, after we "die".......As John Trudell , being a Lakota, who had Traditional values and a high degree of wisdom , knowledge, intelligence and understanding of "REALITY".......said, very truly, and wisely, "Without Earth, there is no Heaven"......We live , we "exist", as Spirits, in the Spirit World, right here , together, with All our Relatives, until "the time is right" for us to be born again, into another life, in whatever form that may be for us.

I recall hearing on the National evening new that Ms. Blackgoat ran off federal agents with a shotgun because she didn't want them stealing her land. When I arrived at the sundance past second Mesa and attended a sweat lodge ceremony I had seen the elder Blackgoat there and she to was a Sundancer there that year. that is the most important Song to learn....it will carry your Spirit right into the Spirit World....I sang it as my wife, Astra, passed away in hospice from chemo..4 years ago......the Spirits came into the room and they burned Sage ....and Tobacco the day before in the hospital room.....(the nurses were all freaking out because they thought I WAS SMOKING IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM).... I did this for her as she left her body...the people in hospice all smelled it.....although I could not for some reason....Then I burned some of my own, to add to theirs...and opened the window.....I cut off my long hair as soon as that happened ...it was the most painful thing I have ever gone thru seeing her leave her body, but I was comforted by the Spirits who came to help her across into the Spirit World......This Song helped so much .....to sing it ...was so hard for me, but I did it , and I am so grateful to have learned it ....I think it helped her feel better in the last moments she was alive on this Earth..I hope that someone can sing this Song for me when I pass away too...

Dale....THANKS SO MUCH for posting this....with all the fighting going on, between the races, even between Native tribes, it SO good to hear the voice of reason, which you so eloquently wrote here.....I have been fighting online here in this video space..( I just deleted all my comments).. with so many Natives who give me a hard time because they say the Ceremony is just for them, not ever for "white people".so it stinks to me.. smells of the stench of hate and death, the vibes I have gotten over expressing my point of view, which is, that, I think the Ceremony can be for all races, in all places of the world, if the people are sincere about it, and know about it, like know ALL about it, how it works, how it's done, and how it affects the entire world.....like what is "the reason" for doing it.....a thing that perhaps is hard to grasp for those people not at all familiar with the Native Ways..white, black, Chinese Japanese, etc....and even Natives, who have not been raised in the traditional Ways....(like Christian Natives who reject their own Ways and know nothing about them)....I don't think anyone should be allowed to go to a Ceremony like this if they hate in their hearts...if they have racist attitudes.....like if they don't like "white people"..or they don't like Black people , they don't like Chinese people etc etc etc.....When I say "don't like" ...I really mean "hate".....because either you LOVE the entire Human Race....or you DON'T......There IS NO MIDDLE GROUND.....It's ALL LOVE ...or ALL HATE....You have to choose, which side are you on?..it's a BIG problem, as far as the Sacred and the Spirits are concerned, because..... how can you pray for the well-being of the entire Universe, when inside your mind, you really hate "white people"??? It just doesn't make any sense to me....All the pain and sacrificing ...is a total "waste of time", if you have any tiny little shred of hate in your heart for other people, especially based on "race".. then I say, all your Sun Dancing means NOTHING.........I was taught to "walk in balance" means being in Harmony with ALL CREATION...that means ..ALL people are my Relatives....just as all the birds, animals, insects, etc are my Relatives...AND I LOVE ALL MY RELATIVES......I choose to love , not to hate...I wish all people would do the same,..its a choice we make.... because the Earth is in peril, and we have no time left to fight over BS ...we need to come together as One people , ONE HUMAN FAMILY...if we REALLY CARE ... and want to save the Earth for all future generations to follow....Life is too short for fighting and hating...... even too short for loving....as all who have lost a love all know too well.....Basically we have NO TIME LEFT to fight anymore...I understand and respect the reason why Native people don't want ignorant "white people" going to the Sun Dances......it's because they don't know about it, they don't understand anything about it, and have absolutely no respect for it either.... ..and so, there is no reason for those kinds of people to be there.....but there are "some", a few... rare individuals, of other races, not just whites, but others too.... who DO KNOW about it , and DO understand what it's all about..Learning about it is no easy task, as there are no classes to attend to learn these Sacred things...Ignorance and Racism are the worst problems we have as Human Beings..but if we try hard to understand and do our research, and take into our hearts the suffering that the people go through, and feel empathy for them, I think it's possible for ALL people to become educated and enlightened...so they will understand and love what it is..We all know what it is like to bleed....and we can grasp the meaning of the word "sacrifice"..if we try....no matter what race we are.......I have been shut out of the Sacred for most of my life...as a "white guy", who has embraced and become a part of the Native American Ceremonies and Way of Life..I have attended Inipis since the 1980's run by Native American Sun Dancers.....who have even given me permission to do the Ceremony for myself and others in need...(something I have not been able to do yet)....I am 58 yrs old, so I have gained some wisdom as I have gotten older....I used to be a brash 20 yr kid, thinking I knew everything....but now I know better.....I have learned the way of being Humble....and Proud , at the same time..... walking in balance....down the middle of the Good Red Road........I accept my lot in life, being born into a "white" family....I had no choice in that, I just arrived there when my dad got my mom pregnant with me...We can't "choose" our race, it was given to us by the Great Spirit...but we can choose what to learn, and our ways of thinking and behaving...... I sure hope people can get it together for once, and unite to fight the "real enemy" trying to destroy the Earth..and all of us too..Our enemy is very powerful, with all the guns, and tanks and police ....they have everything they need to destroy us...and they will not hold back to do so when given their orders..as we saw at Standing Rock......so we REALLY BETTER find a way to beat them , and it's NOT going to be done by fighting them with sticks and stones....they will run over us like a steam-roller....and will have no mercy for anyone.....If unity brought about by true LOVE doesn't happen....soon...then there will be no more generations to follow.....In the words of John Trudell, "we are the 7th generation.....we are the 7th generation"..as he said, "We can't out-fight them, but we CAN out-think them"..." by using our minds, our creative intelligence".

Native people, you can be sure of the powers of yours chants and dances which I have experienced today : I had to meet a friend I had not seen for a long time, but at the last minute she asked me if I would like to come for lunch at her family, where I know nobody, in a very classy neighborhood where I never went to... I was quite nervous because I have always been fearful in such situation, heart beat accelerating, throat squeezing sensation, breathing cuts etc...
I accepted, because I really want to grow and go beyond this problem that I have.
On the way there, I played the songs of this video and sung as loud as I could, even though I do not understand what it means. And the magic happened: I was able to accept things and found myself much more at ease than I would have imagined, we talked about the respect of nature and how I was thinking we should start to turn our belief system and even our rituals towards those who have always loved nature and who have been defending nature over thousands of years and help them by our prayers and thoughts.
Respect to all Native People and Cultures from a Caribbean man living in France.

    Strange but indescibably beautiful.
These chants take me on a journey. Where is it going? What is the next note? Is it up, is it down? Amazing!

The following is a direct quot from Grandfather Frank Fools Crow ................ "The sacred ceremonies do not belong to Indians alone. They can be done by all who have the right attitude and who are honest and sincere about their beliefs in Wakan Tanka and follow the rules. Survival of the world depends on sharing what we have and working together. If we don't, the whole wold will die, first the planet and then the people

+Jason Storlie They do belong the Lakota people. I dare you tell that to a medicine man

+Eli Conroy I would never be so disrespectful to claim that the sacred songs do not belong to the Lakota Oyate. Of course they do. In a respectful way and with good intention, I simply posted a "direct quote" from Grampa Fools Crow, where he points out that the ceremonies (I assume songs are implied) are for all with sincere intent. If you disagree with Frank, I respect your opinion.

Mato Wanbli had deep knowledge of Taku Wakan skan skan. He use to go and visit my grandfather Wallace Black Elk in the old days. before the wounded knee occupation then Grandpa Wallace and grandpa Mato Wanbli (Eagle Bear, Frank Fools Crow) worked together with the other Wapiya men like Leonard Crow Dog and many more during the Wounded Knee Occupation.

the reason why people want this taken down is because in our culture these songs are sung in ceremony and when we song these songs it brings the spirit of our ancestors back and the only way to get rid of the spirits and let them rest is too complete the ceremony. we were taught not to finish the whole song(4verses) so as not to disturb the spirits. which i completely agree with. but i have to admit its nice to hear them when ceremony isnt happening. for anyone who wants to learn the culture we welcome anyone to come and watch or participate.

I am close to the Mother Earth when I dance. I respect the Lakota for showing me the tradition of Sundance. I have many brothers and sisters whom I have been connected to through the Sundance ceremony. I am grateful for my life, and those whom are close to me in this life, too. I am alive, I am respectful to the wisdom I learned from my relatives. I have learned we are all related. We breath, we seek wisdom, nourish our bodies, and drink the water that we cannot live without! Aho! Medawkweasne!
