I just watched this video and replaced the spark plugs in my wife's 2009 Pilot. It was not difficult and took about 45 minutes or so. I will add that it was easier for me to jump up in the engine compartment and lay across the engine to reach the back spark plugs. Also, be careful when you pop the cover back on the top of the engine. I used a little too much manual persuasion to seat the fasteners closest to the firewall and cracked the plastic. The rubber in the spark plug socket I was using was bad. I used the coil packs to extract the plugs once they were loose. It worked great. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the video. Changing those back three plugs are a challenge. My first car was a 1978 Monte Carlo. When I changed the plugs in it, I could almost put a lawn chair and a cooler under the hood with me to make the experience even more pleasant.
The rear are a challenge. Here is what made it easy for me. Put a blanket or towel over the engine. Use a step stool and basically climb up laying on top of the engine. You have to feel most of what your doing. There is enough room to see some. the middle plug was easy. The two outer just take your time with the extension. You may even have to release the socket into the spark plug sleeve and then attach the extension giving enough room around the tubes in the area.
Awesome tutorial I just fixed mines...I didn't double extend I just used an medium extension...you have to place the 5/8 socket inside first before you insert the extension and you definitely have to place a cover over the engine so you get on top and be able to reach the cylinder 2 socket....the mirror tip was sooooo helpful....thanks again....and if the socket don't hold on the spark plug....use the coil pack to take out the plug.
I was investigating P0300/P0301/P0302 for a friend today and came across this video. I decided to call the dealer and he said that they've issued an extended warranty on this vehicle for this particular problem. They'll repair it for free when I take it in. (Toronto, Canada)
Super helpful and well thought out video. I know this engine reasonably well having done the timing belt and valve clearances and your video was still really helpful. Especially the notes about the error codes and Honda TSP (I think that's what you called it). Thanks.
i just replace my pilot 2009 spark plug too, and is the same code, looks like melted spark plug is very easy to replace, to erase code just remove the battery cables wait 2 mins and reconnected and thats it the code gone, thank for the video
Just got rid of our 2006. At 80000 miles, it used a qt. of oil every 500 miles. Foul # 3 &4. Honda said that's not a problem. No more Honda's for us, but for those that have one, your vid will sure help!
Thank for your video I save a lot of money following your video and instructions on my Honda Pilot 2009. Exactly used your video though it’s really hard to get out the spark plug #3. Thank you again.
Changing the plugs fixes the engine but not the problem. Disabling the vcm will prevent the misfiring from happening again. There are a variety of ways to do this. I disabled the vcm on my 2010 honda accord (which had two misfires in 67000 miles, p0303 and p0301) by installing the vcmuzzler 2. There are other devices that work too. Plenty of information on the internet. I highly recommend disabling vcm.
Yes still helping people today also!! Was able to change mine last night in less than 20 min because of this God sent video !! Single mom who did it herself. Lol
Hey Damien, since you just did yours, let me ask....how the heck do i squeeze back there to access the 1,2,3 cylinders. My issue is with cylinder 3. There isn't more than an 6-7inch gap between the manifold and the edge of the windshield. Did you have to remove anything to access this? There is a plastic compartment along edge of the windshield that I assume holds some heating/cooling components. Also there is a coolant line up against that edge of the underside right across from those coil packs that I am afraid to go near with my tools (ie. dont want to puncture the line). Do they expect mechanics to just stick the extension bar down there and reach their hands in there without good vantage?
I couldn't help but notice the VSA light went off after changing the spark plugs.. was there any other work done in between? I have the same problems on my 14 pilot..
It's due to piston rings I was a honda mechanic. Cylinder management when the other cylinders kicked in the plugs would be fouled out due to oil bypassing the rings. Changing the plugs is a temporary fix but not a long term solution.
I believe the 2009 has the warranty piston ring issue where it lets oil get into the cylinder and causes Mis Fire and burning oil take it to the dealer and see if it is in campaign for piston rings
I had to change my #1 plug this morning. Its insulator tip and electrode were black. The gap was coated with oil and looked fuzzy, like a shop towel. Would preventing three cylinders from shutting down be a viable workaround for this problem? If so, how do you do it?
Hey, man, after you pulled the 10mm nut and removed that "sleeve", does that expose the top of the spark plug? You actually skipped over the actual removal of the plug itself... thanks for the good video!
Yes, once you take the coil pack off you are ready for the spark plug socket. I found it easier to use two different sockets; one with a rubber insert for extraction and another without the rubber piece for insertion.
How often have you needed to change plugs? Mine is doing it again second time in about 10-15k miles. So I’m probably gonna get rid of it as it seems the rings are bad keep letting oil into the cylinder and fouling the plug.
FYI, there is a lot of info, regarding the 2009-2013 Pilots, as well as other Honda models using the V6 VCM2 engine and misfires. As well, there is a class action law suit pending against Honda for this issue. The lawsuit will be decided on in March. It has to do with codes 301, 302, 303 and 304. The suit will offer reimbursement for any $$ spent fixing anything related to these codes as well as an extended warranty to address any issues related to these codes. You think the spark plugs are hard? Just wait till you have to do pressure power steering hose 😂😂😂. Took me 3 hours for a dam hose. Spark plugs, 15 mins

"Too much Manual persuasion" 🤣👏 this guy too strong! 🤣👏 fuckin plastic right? 🤣

Isn't it crazy? Our 2009 has 175k and doesn't leak or burn any.
64k miles dang that’s too soon! Thanks for the video. Make more 👍👍👍

YOur vid is till helping people. Thank you for your contribution!
Rob, Thank you!!!
Yes still helping people today also!! Was able to change mine last night in less than 20 min because of this God sent video !! Single mom who did it herself. Lol
don't get intimidated its just a machine built by man. nothing to it but to do it. I started off with small stuff and can build an engine now.
Good stuff!!!
That was easy. Long way from the days of the spark plug wire and distributor.
Did mine today on an 08 pilot, was not that bad. Just take your time.

@@jaylev85 I had to lay on top of the engine to get in there. You'll have to rotate your socket wrench, it's a tight squeeze but I got it done.
Thank you for the video! Great job!
I couldn't help but notice the VSA light went off after changing the spark plugs.. was there any other work done in between? I have the same problems on my 14 pilot..
Nice video to fix the issue.

What is the long term solution? My 2010 Pilot with 70k miles just developed this problem I think. Thanks
the back ones aka 1-3-5 are fun to remove
Thanks for your video. It helps me understand what is possibly wrong with my 07 pilot.
great video and explanation, Thanks a million!
Awesome video
How do you gain access to the spark plugs closest to the dashboard? There's no room back there.
I believe the 2009 has the warranty piston ring issue where it lets oil get into the cylinder and causes Mis Fire and burning oil take it to the dealer and see if it is in campaign for piston rings
Yes this happened to my 09 last year. Was covered.
I had to change my #1 plug this morning. Its insulator tip and electrode were black. The gap was coated with oil and looked fuzzy, like a shop towel. Would preventing three cylinders from shutting down be a viable workaround for this problem? If so, how do you do it?
They just need to get rid of the cylinder shut down all together. It just causes problems.
eBay got ngk spark plugs for 53$$ and they are irathium ones
how to fix the scan code P3400 in Honda Pilot 2009
Hi, would you have any knowledge on changing a timing belt on a 2009 honda pilot?
I do not. Sorry
So Honda dealership knows about this and will fix it at no cost?
Good vid! Thanks!

Same here but I did a compression test and all cylinders were good.
Gapping requirement?
The Pilot requires iridium plugs, which are pre-gapped. Setting the gap is not required.

You would also want to gap your new spark plugs.
Spark plugs are usually pre-gapped these days when you buy them for a particular vehicle.
You think the spark plugs are hard? Just wait till you have to do pressure power steering hose 😂😂😂. Took me 3 hours for a dam hose. Spark plugs, 15 mins
lol that thing needs a rering. bank 1
Come on !!!!
Jesus christ those are expensive spark plugs
