- www.vladtv.com/ - Famed Detroit rapper Royce da 5'9" addresses Lord Jamar's recent comments on white rappers being guests in hip hop, and speaks about Macklemore's "Same Love" track. Royce also speaks about letting hip hop evolve instead of taking a stance against new things changing the culture.
i give Royce major thumbs up for this. Royce is one of the realest rappers that ive been hearing for years
Try Greydon Square.... Dirty laundry and Ultra Combo are hella dope.
Agreed!
One reason why Royce is one of my favorite people in Hip Hop. He keeps it real, he's open minded and he has respect.
XxShadowGTxX So is crooked eye in slaughterhouse. he is an intelligent man and a great rapper he kills it on most of the slaughterhouse tracks. i love royce da 5'9 but i also think other members of slaughterhouse should get credit
Pararajasingham Balakumar Well I only singled out Royce because of him being the one interviewed on this video. Each member of Slaughterhouse is a beast and very valuable to Hip Hop in many ways.
lol you only say this because he tapdancing for white folks. if he said black lives matter you would cry and call him a racist
@@Glol91ABC You're butthurt pasting the same shit everywhere
Royce is extremely intelligent, talented and speaks nothing but the truth. (Plus he's one of the all-time greats)
Yep. I couldn't agree more.
because the internet no he's eminems flunkie
el trio jackass
Patrick Illes Tgere no such thing as homophobia. Noone should be forced to acceot homosexuality.
MRostendway thank you, it's not a black or white thing, its stop ramming all this gay stuff down our throats ( no pun intended)
The realest response so far, this one, and Kool G Rap's response are the two I mostly agree with regarding this issue.
Personally, I think Macklemore is nice on the mic device. He only had one song about gay equality, he also has tracks about materialism, addiction, consumerism, major record labels and corporations, and his take on the whole sneaker culture. The man is a very talented song writer.
Royce just won another fan, good man with a mature attitude... kind of a Shepard at this point.
Either evolve, or you will be prehistoric before too long.
You can tell Royce is a very intelligent person.
Jason Correll What the fuck does that have to do with what my comment said?
+Shaun Michael You called him intelligent. This dude is far from it or maybe you don't know what intelligence is. Something can't evolve if it's dead
Jason Correll Yeah he's totally not intelligent he's just a millionaire and you're a what? oh wait.
+Shaun Michael having money makes you intelligent? Lol hold an L for eternity.
Shaun Michael "Yeah he's totally not intelligent he's just a millionaire and you're a what? oh wait."
No refunds for this dumb shit right here.
The L is yours, for life.
Many of yall don't understand what he is saying. Hip Hop has evolved and is constantly evolving. At one point of time people was against emcees stealing the light, gangsta rap, rock mashups, rappers that act, etc. If you understand the consciousness of it truly in all its elements, then you understand exactly what Royce is saying, which is spot on. Krs talks about it all the time. I'm hardcore from the hood but we always move with intelligence and critical thinking, fuck all hate and dumb shit.
Finally, someone intelligent on Vladtv.
Lord Jamar is like a stubborn old man who can't let his pride go. I mean it's about time to give the other race some freedoms if that makes ANY sense...
Na..hes probably pissed to see what the likes of Eminem etc have done to the industry.
I agree 💯
This doesn't even look like Royce. Homie lost hella weight and talks real meek and shit.
Meek?? nah son more like calm and articulate
He's talking like an adult. A grown ass man & mature human being.
startervisions Royce is hot XD
startervisions mainstream "hip hop" is a joke now. It's nothing like what KRS-ONE and Schooly D started. Lord Jamar is a racist. Things will never change as long as intolerance is being preached. Black people will always lose the race war. Why continue to try and fight it? Its just so wrong. Thank you for acknowledging how bad ass Royce is now.
I guess Michael Jordan was a guest in basketball... based on Lord Jamar’s logic.
vlad need to interview eminem and 50 cent
Lord "Has No Place in Hip-Hop" Jamar
I wish Royce was more out there. He's so underrated. He smashes jay-z n drake n cats like that. Very intellectual both just in free speech and in lyrics.
Real shit. Let it evolve man and stop living the past.
***** Into something more than just selling drugs, sex women and getting money. I bought Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar's and both of them are nice. Yeah I believe Kendrick should've won best rap album, but I understand why he didn't. Macklemore is an independent artist and he slaying giants in the game with his album sales. I'm surprised no rappers have asked him for a feature. Back in the day no rapper would've said stop treating people unfairly because of their sexual preference on an album. The rap game was too closed minded about that. T.I. has evolved from his first album. So has Jay-Z because neither one are still glorifying that bs.
Ay', Dennis. Let me introduce you to somebody I think you might appreciate the music and message of, he goes by Greydon Square.

I love how all the videos of people responding to Lord Jamar have been all over my recommendations since Kamikaze dropped..
The song that introduced Hip Hop to the world, simply said Hip Hop was for everyone! Sorry Jamar, YOU DON'T MAKE THE RULES
"Rapper's Delight"
I said a hip hop, Hippie to the hippie, The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie, To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat. Now, what you hear is not a test - I'm rappin' to the beat, And me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet. See, I am Wonder Mike, and I'd like to say hello, To the black, to the white, the red and the brown, The purple and yellow. But first, I gotta Bang bang, the boogie to the boogie, Say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie, Let's rock, you don't stop, Rock the rhythm that'll make your body rock. Well so far you've heard my voice but I brought two friends along, And the next on the mic is my man Hank, C'mon, Hank, sing that song!
"Sorry Jamar, YOU DON'T MAKE THE RULES"
There are unwritten rules that not everyone is aware of because who knew what lay ahead in the future?! Certain things in Hip Hop and black culture are the way they are for a reason; TO NOT SELL OUT to you know who.
The music was meant for those party people of the moment, of the times. This style of music was created "FOR US BY US" in the same sense of the FUBU clothing brand was meant for urban-cultured blacks. You cannot truly compare retail clothing off the rack to the spirit of blacks and the music and style of how they live and move, know what I mean? You cannot bottle and sell change and revolution nor can you control an ignored yet enlightened people's culture and trends.
In the context of Hip Hop, Whites did not come to the ghettos of NYC unless they were INVITED like members of Blondie and others were, to check out this different musical form. And still, that was well before the controversial "Rapper's Delight" was even written and recorded. YES...I said CONTROVERSIAL.
James Taylor So Hip Hop is for blacks and only blacks? or is it for urban people of all races? Disco was huge and huge parties that had a dress code also too expensive for folks from the hood to afford, so DJ Kool Herc started his own parties with no dress code and was cheap! that's how Hip Hop was created! guess what? whites are poor and also lived in Bronx! So some corny rich black guy that don't know anything about the culture can be part of it but a white that knows everything about it because that's where he comes from can't? saying only blacks are poor is really stupid, and saying that Hip Hop has limits and barriers is taken away from the art form! It's kinda like saying basketball should only be played by whites but if a black plays the game he has to follow the whites rules! Hip Hop has helped break the racism in the world but now we have folks trying to take away from what Hip Hop has accomplished!
shortbus1127
You're level of understanding what I'm saying seems limited. Try to see the world through the eyes of American blacks of the late 1960s-1970s. Then narrow it down to Blacks and Puerto Ricans living together in NYC during that same period. It was all on the news and it's all on the internet.
"You cannot bottle and sell change and revolution nor can you control an ignored yet enlightened people's culture and trends."
That quote right there means a lot, my man. The music/art form enlightened the hardest of NYC's minority youth/young adults and gangs and crews. It means a lot to blacks and hispanics who are in the know and lived through those times. Those kids went through a lot, man. There were no whites around until the cops were called in to crack skulls. All the shit people took from their parents and stuff. It's really deep. Deep like a young girl becoming a parent, knowing she has created something of her own, knowing no one can take her creation or accomplishment away.
Hip Hop hasn't evolved in a natural way, no. It has been polluted and perverted. Ultimately toxic and pushed upon the the masses mostly comprised of young black youth. The ones who are most likely to emulate all the negative aspects of this entertainment. The warnings about selling out and the messages about respecting yourself, family and community have been covered up and almost lost. All by design. The people responsible are white politicians in bed with white corporations who run the media outlets. It's COINTELPRO all over again, except, they wised up and are using the culture against the people this time.
The banning of positive artists on radio and video shows should be the last straw. Unfortunately, these new kids are sucking up the money and the promise of potential fame. They gotta have their "me too" moment just like their idols and pioneers. Too much power and no perception.
shortbus1127
I respect your openness about your humble beginnings. I'm curious as to where you are from, how you were first introduced to the music, if you don't mind. Myself, I'm a 45yr old Black man, grew up poor and hungry in the Soundview projects in the Bronx with four other siblings, the youngest of seven but I don't know the oldest two. Five, maybe six, of us have different fathers. I asked my mother about that a few years ago. My mom told me she loved dick lol.
Unfortunately, I've been living in Buffalo and Niagara Falls,NY since 1997 and the change in location has forced me to hear the wackest of music up here. I'm well outside of the Mecca of Hip Hop but then again, I outgrew the music back in the early 90s. I absolutely hated, FUCKING HATED, West Coast rap. Luckily, I have had the fortune of growing up during the 1970s with Hip Hop music since it's beginning and know the difference between the good and the crap.
I am blessed and cursed at the same time because of this.
James Taylor At 12 a d 13 my mom had a few men that did'nt like me, so I ended up homless but had some friends and girlfriends I could stay with. I needed money for clothes, food and weed cuz I loved to smoke at that time, so I started breaking into houses and robbin folks and sellin drugs if I had them. well you know how that turns out! I ended up in the youth jail and their I said I wasn't part of a gang so they threw me in with the bloods but I am from a Crip neighborhood so I had problems, but I thought I had Everything to prove so I stuck it out and just fought untill I went to the hole! well anywayz I ended up being in and out of jail and prison for years apon years! I always had a drinking problem, but when I was released from prison my second time I reaaly started boosin! (the whole time I would freestyle and battle even won them on the radio for a while) well in "06" I had my first child, a daughter and I wanted to change! I tried but old ways and drinking die slow! well through a few years going to jail on some petty stuff and some fights and a couple hospital trips due to drinking a fighting, I ended up having another daughter! my woman left me and started seein someone else (can't blame her} I got really upset and tried to kill him, but He ran! anyways I went to jail one last time! got out a my oldest was getting ready to start school and thats when I MADE THE COMMITMENT THAT I WOULD GET SOBER AND STOP MAKING EXCUSES! I WENT BACK TO AA, STARTED HELPING OTHERS, CHAIRING MEETINGS, STARTED BEING THE MAN I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE! MY DAUGHTERS MOM AND I STARTED WORKING ON OUR RELATIONSHIP AND I STARTED PUTTING OTHERS BEFORE SELF! NOW I'VE BEEN SOBER FOR QUITE SOME TIME, AND I MAKE IT A NEW DAY EVERYDAY TO BECOME BETTER THAN I WAS YESTERDAY! THROUGH ALL THIS AND WAY MORE HIP HOP MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE TO HELP ME TO STRIVE!
Royce is easily one of my favorite emcees.. And this is wisdom right here
I have long thought that Royce Da 5'9 was a sensible dude. Definitley articulate. We need more young brothas like him and O Trice in the game
Hip Hop once had a message, now it's commercialized
I guess a white man talking about his daughter is commercialized?
Why didn't Murs get the same accolades and praise for his pro-gay song THAT CAME OUT(no pun intended) first??? I think we all know why. I don't give a damn about gays, their 'movement', or their bandwagon supporters, but it's funny that Murs didn't get any recognition.
I just realized Royce is wearing a 'Detroit vs Everybody' t-shirt, which is the single for Shady XV released a year after the interview. It turns out to be a clothing brand and the cover art for the single is just that logo. Had not idea of this
Wow, a motherfucking Voice of Reason.
You like voices of reason, eh? Try Greydon Square.

All people are in most cases I just wish there will come a moment in time that everyone starts working together
Saying whites or any other races are guest is stupid. No different than if a white guy said baseball is a "white" sport. It was a white sport, because of ignorant people. Same situation here.
Gay rappers, who cares. I wouldn't buy it, but lots of people will. Look at Netflix streaming, there's a GAY category. I'm not into, but someone is or it would have it own category. Cash is king and if there's a market, someone will sell it. Doesn't mean you have to buy it.
What about a black secular humanist atheist Iraq War vet rapper...
~ youtube .com/watch?v=iUiwxfBdeJI
Royce looked so disappointed when told that Jamar thinks white people are 'guests.' Not angry but disappointed.
There goes the I have black friends comment! I was waiting for that.
hahahah fucking racist
Fighting Words Boxing Network white people got your tongue bitch haha
Royce is the Michael Wilbon of rap. They always have consistent, logical opinions
Spoken like a true man. Big up.
"Hip hop needs to be preserved because it allows an outlet for people who may not have high school degrees, have a criminal record or violent tendencies to express themselves. It is life." There's plenty of people within other races who fit this criteria, what about them?
Evolve into what? Devolve is more like it...but don't be a hater, right? lol. This shit is ridiculous.
Absolutely! Cats need to wake up to what is going on...it is already out of hand
Cool story bro, so what do you think about Greydon Square?
~~ youtube .com/watch?v=iUiwxfBdeJI ~~ Is _that_ ruinin' hip hop?
Does a black atheist secular humanist Iraq War vet not "belong?"
I lived in Michigan from 1990-1991, on a military base community with my aunt & uncle (who repaired jets for the Air Force). It was a dope experience, I have love for Michigan. I'm thinking about saving up some money, and taking a weekend vacay to Ann Arbor next summer.
Lord jamar is a Eminem hater he is bias when it comes to em, an he talks like he created rap hip hop an talks a lot of crap about rappers especially if they white, i wonder what he'd about pun cause pun was better then most For a big guy he went in R.I.P my fellow P.R
How.... Jus cause somebody doesn't fuck with em doesn't make them a hater fr fr niggas as a whole don't listen to Eminem anyway if you wanna be real. And still we don't hate his ass so.... Yea
James Young well yes he hates him sort of. He said only corny people fuckk with him
He said all the people complimenting him doesnt mean IT they only want to colab him
He said that nicki Minaj is better
And more
@@eh712 Plus Rakim called Eminem the GOAT
Get Outta here bro this comment section is toxic
Eminem outsold everyone this year despite the fact that he pushed all his white fans away
Hip hop is the only musical art form that evolves constantly to stay relevant and that's why I don't think it'll ever die out like country and rock and most other genre's. Hip has done reggae, it's done club/trap, its done country sound, rock sound, dubstep even. It's gonna keep cracking open new things to talk about as long as theirs truth or history behind it. It will evolve to survive whether you like it or not.
Let it evolve=Let it die....smh
chickenwityamz You are so correct
What type of "things" do you think people need to take a stand for Royce? (Is what Vlad should have asked..) Full interview please!!
I cant take these lil rappers today serious, especially when you're already compromised like this man is.
One of the most underrated rappers.
Royce da 5'9" is a beacon of truth. He gets all my respect. If you don't like someone's music don't buy it. The only monopoly on expression is oppression.
I agree with letting hip hop evolve, nothing can stay the damn same forever. Its just impossible.
But Jamar speaks the truth. cant argue dat!
pause 1:29 ... that's royces whole reaction to this conversation. he knows talkin about this shit can make people shit on him. but i love royce. he's wise. big ups
Just because Lord Jamar released a track at this time... it doesn't take away from the TRUTH of his statment.
Apples and Oranges... And it's about dame time someone with some intelligence and Consciousness Got some Light!
I think it's brilliant! The negativity doesn't always have to have all the light.
This is what an adult sounds like people
I know, right?! Hip hop is the total opposite of rules, and is all about the freedom to express one's self, as well as bringing people together.
His Makaveli alter ego was his gangster persona. It was right before he died, when he was playing the part of a gangster villian. His persona took on traits such as cunning, ruthlessness, and strength. A lot of 'Makaveli's' lyrics were about strategic maneuvering against his many enemies, things like that. So basically, it wasn't 2pac's more gentle side being expressed in the 'Makaveli' persona.
emenim came with respect he,s well respected in hip hop respect is everything
just gained some respect for Royce!
You should have even _more_ respect for Greydon Square, then...
~ youtube .com/watch?v=iUiwxfBdeJI
royce da 5'9 is a hard worker. ..the brother I'd long winded. ..great writer
We need more Royce, Vlad!
was i the only one cracking up when royce is just sitting there being filled in on what happened? lol the look on his face when hes just listening is funny for some reason to me lmao NICKEL!
The problem with the idea of letting hip hop "evolve" is that what happens when it evolves into something that you no longer recognize. But honestly that has pretty much already happened with the music so it is all fair game.
Finally someone here besides Royce and I with some sense...I agree with you.
I agree with the comment that what Royce considers as evolution of Hip Hop really equals the death of Hip Hop. When people play Lord Jamar's interviews in 5 or 10 years it will be seen how right he is. You can look at the early Lord Jamar videos and see how what he says has manifested.
Exactly. "Let Hip Hop evolve" = "Fall back and let these people finish fucking it up for good".
did you watch this video or the lord jamar video?
The whole talent of RAP Music died in 1996 with the LEGENDARY 2PAC....R.I.P
Nope
Lil Wayne
Eminem
Royce Da 59
K Dot
The Notorious BIG was alive after Pac and he's better
everyone should listen to this Mykill Darcshyne rapper guy..hes got sick singles with TECH N9NE AND few other rappers ..this guy is crazy and his lyrics are off the hook like a cellphone. check out his videos i dont know what hes signed to but hes dope. freal.
Hip Hop is Black music/culture. Anyone who isn't black is a guest, not just whites
"Orientation by definition is something that can change." Sexual Orientation: a person's sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted; the fact of being heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual.
"Who is now straight" a straight person has always been straight..."depending on circumstances, be attracted to the same gender in the near future" no, that's called comin to terms acceptin' yourself instead of havin to pretend to be straight just to please others.
Yes it means the desire to act on it, but doesn't mean they act on it, they just think about it, have it in their mind.
Nobody said you can't rap Royce ..you carry tradition ..others don't ...Jamar wasn't talking about you...but he backed up
Respect for speaking the truth!
totally agree! People that dont know hip hop or are hip hop elitist complain about the subject matters of money, cars, etc.
I agree with Royce on one thing though, everyone should have the freedom to speak about whatever it is they want to speak about!
I love how the white rapper agreed with Jamar, but all these Black rappers going against Jamar looks ridiculous.
I think Vlad took offense to the comment Lord Jamar made as he respectfully can. Let me make myself clear I believe Hip Hop is evolving into some good things and some bad things. Everyone has an opinion and we should respect Jamar's. Whether we agree or disagree. Question, what do you think about the entertainment industry? Hollywood? What race of people dominates the silver screen? Who writes the checks? When you think about it you can see whats whats and thats TRUTH!
Royce explained my exact views from A to Z. Nice to see that I'm not the only one.
Lil B gets credit for a lot.. Seriously.. He does, just not by our own.
White ppl love Lil B to death.. Majority of us,do not want to be associated with his music, but bite his style in a sense.. Im a Lil b fan,yes I am.. He's abstract.. I like a risk taker.. And he takes extreme risk.. Which opens doors for more artistic value..
Vlad, I think you need to stop asking people about what Lord Jamal says and get Macklemore in there to ask him. In fact schedule a sit down with Lord Jamal and Macklemore and film the discussion
Oh okay, you mean those who were born & raised culturally as Jewish. No, I'm not Jewish. My heritage is Irish, German, and 1/5 Native American. I didn't say I was atheist, I'm a deist. But I do empathize with atheists who are pissed off at the fundamentalists within organized religions, and share some of their views.
Royce is right on the spot! Yah bless!
Dude you have strong logic, I have hope for humans now. Thank You.
What, you didn't see this coming from a mile away? Soon as I saw Royce, I knew he was gonna disagree with Jamar (and thank God). I would like to know what Nas thinks about Lord Jamar's statement. I've looked up Nas's interviews in the past, and it seems like he's been careful enough to avoid interviews that asks certain questions. But if Vlad could get him on here it would be interesting.
True! Murrs is dope... Wish he'd get more credit..
Never heard of Macklemore until Jamar brought him up
Even tho Royce blocked me on twitter I still have mad respect. Big up.
Royce said it Lord Jamar is a staple in Hip Hop and is respected he came from different time, but truthfully skirts n tight pants aren't Hip Hop
Classic musical art forms such as rock, and rap/hip hop, will never die. Dubstep is just another genre for the techno crowd, and if you ask me regular techno is much better. No hate against the fans of dubstep, I just don't get it. It sounds like noise, and there's no danceable beat. You probably gotta be tripping on a hallucinogen in order to enjoy dubstep.
This is why he's asking everyone what they think about Lord Jamar saying what he says,
I've been watching all these vidoes on the reactions but no one mentions Murs and his love and rockets track "Animal Style" I think both are good an Murs put his out before Macklemore!
who the hell is Murs?
i think they´re mentioning Macklemore cause he´s mainstream, therefore his influence over hip-hop is bigger than some Murs guy
Definitely have thought the same thing on a few occasions. Murs is is raw, and the track was also pretty good.
I don't support certain agendas but it is the right of the artist to express themselves, I agree with Royce!
I agree coming from a white person I do want black rappers to form a majority in hip-hop
Anyone know what brand those glasses are?
Well said bruh! Great contextualization of the situation.
Sexual identity occurs in which gender you're attracted to, definition of sexual identity: refers to how one thinks of oneself in terms of whom one is romantically or sexually ATTRACTED TO, so with that said once again, if you're attracted to the same gender your sexual identity is gay or lesbian, if you're attracted to both genders your sexual identity is bisexual and if you're attracted to the opposite gender your sexual identity is straight, its simple as that.
its like the first time ive seen Royces eyes in the since Scary Movie, hes ALWAYS has sunglasses on
I wonder what kind of glasses he's wearing
Anyone know?
Look like tommy hillfinger or parada
I been fucking wit dude since dj clue days. Much respect for him and his opinion
*face palm* There's a big difference between wearing a gender bending style of clothing as a fashion statement, and being a homosexual. Did Kanye wear a pink skirt? Was it trimmed in lace? Did he wear silk stockings and heels with that skirt? Was the skirt shaped in a way that made it look like he had wide hips (called a princess cut)? No! It was in masculine colors, had typical masculine material, and the shape of the skirt wasn't "princess cut".
Let hip hop evolve into what? Do you mean like other genres of music that was stolen and altered?
You don't get to decide
There really isn't a true definition of "hip hop" just ppl and their opinion, but for ppl to say doin pro-gay songs is not hip hop is nonsense, Im glad Macklemore made that song, Im not apart of the LGBT Community, but I am pro-gay myself, but Im glad he made that song, we need more ppl to address the homophobia in hip-hop...if its the behavior then why do some guys still call them "bitch"? if its their behavior? it would make sense for one to say "they're actin like a female dog".
Eminem did sell more than Tupac worldwide but Tupac sold more than EM in U.S alone. Wow.
Tupac had 3x more album than Eminem
Marriage equality, the right to choose (I personally wouldn't abort if I could get pregnant, but I don't judge others who abort), and freedom of religion are good things.
Verse 50, says they were haughty and committed ABOMINATION before me...What's an obomination to the Lord? Leviticus 20:13!!! Don't you know that the word sodomy comes from the word Sodom? So homosexuality was a reason for Sodom & Gomorrah's destruction...What you don't remember that angels that were going to get gang raped were men? And that was the problem that Lot had with the men at the door...He was going to give them his daughters, but the fact they wanted men was an obomination...
anyone else think that Royce startin to look like the brother Face now with age?
Already.. Lord J kept it official.
Hip hop was born on rejecting the rules.. Now niggas wanna act like hip hop itself has all these rules. Nigga please. Tell em, Royce!
Hmm that is true we don't all have to agree but the least we can do is tolerate each others views
Yes it would be amazing,if we support elevation & difference.. Instead of supporting the repetitive & redundant aspects of our culture.. Take advantage of all areas of hip hop,by accepting every subject and concepts.. Embrace ours as well,I dont fault anybody but ourselves.. Whites support their own, like they should.. No fault there or blame..
referring to people as "close minded", "ignorant" or "homophobic" simply because they disagree with your opinion on a matter is what makes some believe that it is an agenda being forced on to them. If some said that being muslim is the only true religion and constantly tried to force you into accepting the nation of Islam as the "right" religion wouldn't you, if you were a christian, feel some type of way???
