Hi Kurt, I have never talked to you before but, I want to tell you that no matter what else you do in your life spend as much time as you can with your mom. My mom died three years ago and I would give anything to be able to talk to her one more time and tell her that I love her and miss her so very much. We just never think we will ever lose our mothers. Thank you for showing your family and letting us get to know them. Tell your mom that I hope she gets better fast and God Bless her.

We like to have a fan running all the time, summer and winter. I used to like to leave a window cracked open but now my husband is convinced someone will break in and carry one of us off. I don’t know about him, but once they got me in bright light, they’d turn around and bring me back! Lol! 😱

I know a guy that did exactly what you're talking about and ut worked great. He pulled an asphalt tanker and we would spend hours on road jobs idling so he came up with that. His generator is a Honda 6,000 watt amd it powers a heater, his roff a/c, his hot plates and crockpot, refrigerator and microwave. The awesome thing about it is it's so quiet.

You should look into mini-splits: a 20-22 SEER inverter 9000 BTU mini-split with heat pump capability would freeze you and Opie out of First Class in minutes, offering efficient cooling and heating. It pulls just 850-1250 watts, significantly less than the 2000-4000 watts of a rooftop RV AC unit, ensuring lower power consumption and reduced fuel costs with a smaller generator.
A 6000 BTU mini-split (500-750 watts) would keep you comfortable. Mounting the mini-splits outdoor unit on the back of the cab with fabricated brackets is straightforward, and you can mount the indoor unit on the inside back wall or use a ceiling mini-split version in the sleeper.
Most inverter-style mini-split heat pump systems operate quietly and efficiently, providing temperature control in extreme conditions, from cooling in summer to heating in winter down to -20 degrees. While an RV rooftop AC has a sound level of about 75dB (like a vacuum cleaner), a mini-split is about 25-35dB (whisper).

@@chrisg8566 ….. does that run off of battery or generator?

    • @chrisg8566
      @chrisg8566 Месяц назад +1

@@rlfedler In this scenario, a small to medium generator is the answer because a semi-truck lacks sufficient space on the cab roof to accommodate enough solar panels to charge 48-volt battery packs. These batteries are essential for powering an inverter capable of running a mini-split system effectively without losing too much power in the transfer. A solar charge controller would also be needed, further complicating the setup.

Honda makes nice quiet units and they certainly would make one strong enough for what you want to power. Word of advice on the tank. I know the RV transporters have to be diligent on their extra capacity tanks that they are DOT approved for that usage. Their Xtra tanks actually have DOT certification labels approving that usage. There is a shop in Indiana called Dan's Service Center that would have such tanks. Not butting in , but I'd hate to see you put out of service for that reason. Take care, hope your Mom's doing better.

Just install a mini split on the back of the cab. Doesn't matter whether you get a residential or RV/truck one, it's going to be mounted on the back of the cab well protected. You can go cheap/generic Chinese, or high-end, ultra-efficient Fujitsu or Mitsubishi made in Japan. Doesn't matter as much as you think, especially if you're running it with free solar, but as an engineer I like super efficient equipment.
All the piping and wiring to the air handler inside goes through a hole about the same size as the hole for a door knob on your house. Power it from LiFePO4 batteries feeding an inverter. A 12V 300Ah battery the size of a car battery and weighing 53 to 58 pounds (less than 10 gallons of gasoline), costs under $500 now. One was $432 on Prime Day, will probably be well under $400 by Black Friday. Charge it from solar, charge it from a DC-DC charger or inverter off the truck batteries, charge it from a 120V outlet, or as a backup, charge it from your (not great) idea of a little gasoline generator. One such battery has 3840 watt hours, so will power a mini split for as long as you're able to sleep, but go ahead and install two or three of them to scrap the idea of a gas generator as backup. Even a cheap quiet generator and 5 gallons of gas weigh a lot more than a 2nd battery.
The heat pump can cool or heat, so you eliminate the need for inefficient resistance heating powered by a generator, you eliminate an APU, you eliminate idling the truck.
Here is the math for two 12V 300Ah LiFePO4 batteries and keeping them charged. 7680 watt hours, OK to use it all before recharging. That's 10 to 40 hours of running a mini split, depending on size/temp/load/etc. Even if you run it down the whole, way, and have zero solar, 10 hours of driving while pulling 800W of charging from the truck, and it's back to 100%, which you don't even need it to be, and you'll rarely if ever be starting from 0% charge. You could drain and recharge it every day for 10 years, which is not something you're likely to do. How many generators would you go through in 10 years if you ran it several hours every day?
Normally you wouldn't even need to charge it from 0% using truck power, if you have even just 200W to 400W of solar panels on the roof, back, or hood of your truck, charging it for free all the time. I'd recommend very flexible, thin CIGS technology panels. Several sizes and shapes of 80W, 100W, and 200W CIGS panels are available. They are 1/16 of an inch thick, come rolled up, just peel and stick. You can walk on them, drive on them, shoot them, and they still work. Sunlight is free, solar panels are silent, and LiFePO4 batteries are much safer than the batteries in cordless tools, or a gas generator. No noise, no fumes, no need to get the truck to a gas pump, no worries about gas tank regulations.
If inept, you can do the same thing with a large portable LiFePO4 power station and "power station extension batteries", if you don't mind spending 5x as much as assembling a custom system of components. It's like a boom box vs a component stereo, as far as picking exactly the size, power, charging methods, and other specs.

Thinking of cosmetic plans, I know she has some paint issues but a good paint job is very expensive.
Having all of your wheels machine polished, a new grill and some nice new polished battery box covers,
along with your taller stacks and the little spoiler on top of the sleeper would totally transform the old girl
and it wouldn't cost very much, and once everything is machine polished it is really easy to keep things
nice and shiny, but you already know all of that.

I did air conditioning similar to what you describe. I chose a dual fuel inverter (seems like everything is inverter) generator and run it off propane. I carry a 5 gallon gasoline can and can run off gasoline if propane fails. Gasoline does go bad and it is sometimes a pain to get gasoline in a loaded truck. Propane tanks can be exchanged or refilled easily and does not require a custom tank. I have dual tanks so I can exchange the empty and run off the other. I added a 3000 watt inverter and can run my ac off that (and the alternator) on the highway if my truck a/c has problems. I mounted my small already enclosed generator behind the sleeper and haven't had any problems. I have an RV air conditioner with an inverter compressor that starts and runs just fine off the 3000 watts. I had the cover painted to match my truck.

in Australia, we have a system called an Icepack. similar to an APU, it is its own, separate diesel engine, plumbed into the trucks diesel supply, has its own starter motor, i am not too sure if it has its own a/c compressor etc? but it has its own outlets into the bunk. Has its own radiator etc. and they are designed to mount and run on semi trucks. and also as an added bonus, they have their own alternator, and start battery, so they can give enough charge to start a flat semi. worth checking out if you haven't already set your own thing up.

I always have a fan running summer or winter. I'd take mom with me occasionally. She loved riding in the truck. Would be nice to hear her voice again. Hope your mom is doing ok.

If you’re buying a generator please look into the Honda inverter. They are the most quiet you’ll ever experience.

Spend and help your parents out and ask questions about everything you can think of. You never know it might be the last day you see them. I lost my mom back in 11/2020, I miss talking to her. Hope your mom gets well .Keep them both healthy and active. God bless and safe travels

I hope your Mom is doing better Kurt. I know it's hard when they start getting up in years.
I know she thinks that not everybody needs to know about her personal dealings,
but I know when I went through some very serious health problems for almost two years,
it was kinda nice knowing that there were people that had me in their thoughts...
My dad passed away unexpectedly a year ago. He was 84. About four months ago my Mom
fell and broke her leg and hip, and her arm and shoulder. She was in a rehab facility for almost
two months. She's back home but she still isn't able to do a lot of things or walk without a walker,
and she can't drive yet, so I'm the designated Uber, Uber food delivery and shopper for her,
but that's alright. I don't mind and she only lives about 15 miles from me...
It's amazing how much a serious health issue changes a person especially when they get older.

1987 Pete 352 with a 13,500 btu rv air conditioner mounted on top works like a dream . I’ve got a champion duel fuel Genny w remote start . I highly recommend the remote start feature . It will run for 9 hours with the standard tank it comes with ( gas tank ).

They make roof mount heat pumps now. Cools when hot and provides heat when cold. Look into those. Genset will need air flow around it for cooling: a total enclosed cabinet is not a good choice.

Generator is a good idea. It would be better if it was a diesel generator, that way you could just fuel your truck and the generator at the same pump.

Folks out here in Eureka where there is lots of humidity had constant trouble with their gasoline generator gas lines in their motorhome gelling up to the point they disconnected it. The repair place told them to run it every 2 weeks at least. They claim they did and still had trouble. We here in Redding run our 2 gasoline generators (one in RV other fir emergency fir the house) once a month. Never have any trouble but we have very low humidity. Just thought you should know. Husband said something about what is in the gas affects it too. (Corn?)
