***** I have missed your question before :P I play by ears, but not totally. I usually start with music sheet and then improve it by ears. The reason is, music sheet is just showing the notes, but it can never show the emotion and groove for the pop songs. To me, music sheet is like lyrics for singer. After a singer knows the lyrics, he has to find the way to sing it or even improve the way or melody he sings it. I would remake the notes to suit I think the song would fit, and add the emotion and presentation which is beyond description of words to the music.

***** I have missed your question before :P I play by ears, but not totally.
I usually start with music sheet and then improve it by ears. The reason is, music sheet is just showing the notes, but it can never show the emotion and groove for the pop songs. To me, music sheet is like lyrics for singer. After a singer knows the lyrics, he has to find the way to sing it or even improve the way or melody he sings it.
I would remake the notes to suit I think the song would fit, and add the emotion and presentation which is beyond description of words to the music.
