    They're harmless yes but they do register on a Geiger counter and it's a fairly good tool for identifying them in flea markets and antique stores. You can also find clocks, watches, compasses, and ceramics as well.

      I have heard that, but I've never had one to try it. I've had some people in our store that would find things that would glow that I never imagined... right under my nose. There's some experts out there sniffing that co stuff out. You're probably one of them!

    I’ve been hunting uranium glass for about 12 years. Found some great pieces and sold some I regret selling because I’ll probably never find them again regardless of the price. There were Vaseline glass pieces made that have uranium in them even in the late 1800s. Getting harder and harder to find the really old and rare pieces, seems like people who are buying them are keeping them nowadays and not selling them. I have over 100 uranium glass pieces currently and I’m no longer selling any of mine either. When I first started hunting it was so much cheaper and easier to find them then it is now. I believe I missed my era for buying nice pieces for much cheaper then they are now. I no longer buy common pieces though and only hard to find pieces.

    To be real with you guys, these are not totally harmless. They do release beta particles but the amount is so minute, the chances of it causing damage to you is, for all intents and purposes, negligible- a little worse that walking out on a sunny day. The risk is there. Bonus fact, the metal and element Bismuth is radioactive, however, it is so astronomically small to be effected and harmed from it. It releases like 3-8 beta particles a day for ~100 grams worth and has a half life several times longer that the estimated life of the universe. For perspective, a single atom of uranium decays into lead by releasing 6 beta particles.

      Indeed they are not entirely safe. Since 99% of the natural Uranium is mostly U-238 (a lot less radioactive than U-235 and U-234) and the amount is even higher in depleted Uranium (which are both used for Uranium glas) they are primarily emitting Alpha radiation, which is especially dangerous when it gets into the body by eating or drinking off of the glas. The decay products however do emit beta radiation which is more difficult to protect yourself from. There is not a lot of Uranium in the glas so generally speaking it is harmless but I certainly would not consume anything off of it.

    I've been collecting Vaseline glass for over 40 years now. I've never heard it referenced as "uranium glass" before. The two pieces of the yellow-green color, the button pitcher and orange juicer, is "Vaseline" glass. The rest of what you have in front of you is simply Depression Glass. Yes, the green color comes from uranium, but green depression glass is different from Vaseline glass. The value differently as well, green depression glass is of like value to any other depression glass. What collectors want is the Vaseline glass, as it's much more valuable.

    • @BackPorchAntiques
      @BackPorchAntiques  5 месяцев назад +5

      I think I mentioned those name differences in my video. If not, it was a previous one. However, collectors of this glass today call it Uranium Glass, and they buy it as soon as I get it in the store. Also, this market has changed significantly in 6 months, so nothing is as it was 40 years ago to these new collectors. Yellow or green doesn't matter. It's all about how bright it glows and what shape it is.

    • @CalvinGentry-u9h
      @CalvinGentry-u9h 2 месяца назад +1

      Although its sometimes used interchangeably with uranium glass, but true Vaseline Glass refers to a specific yellow-green color. Custard Glass can be mistaken for uranium glass because some custard glass contains uranium. True custard glass is opaque and usually a pale yellow. Canary Glass is another term sometimes used for yellow uranium glass, which can cause confusion as well

    • @jerichomoses9790
      @jerichomoses9790 19 дней назад +1

      I agree with @BackPorchAntiques. It’s not like it used to be. Most people now refer to any green glass that glows as uranium glass and the value over the last year or more has significantly increased. Also getting harder and harder to find better uranium glass pieces for any kind of reasonable price. But I’m basing prices off of what they once were, so to me they seem crazy expensive compared to what they were 10 years ago.

    Years ago I helped a friend clean out his grandfather's home after he had past. The man was probably the most neat and organized hoarder I have ever seen. He had tons of this stuff, all matching sets, some on display, some boxed up in what looked like original packaging. We didn't know what it was, my friend had made the decision to just get rid of it, as he was tasked with this responsibility, being the only member of the family left. So we took it all and put into the dumpster that he had rented. It was still early in the cleanup, so the dumpster was relatively empty, and we walked it all in through the door on the end and stacked it all. We weren't necessarily gentle, but we definitely didn't just meet the boxes over the side. So in NW Ohio, there is a dump that has a ton of this stuff buried in it. If we only knew.....

      It would be extremely rare for that to happen, as most of it has around the same amount of radioactivity as a glow in the dark watch dial (radium paint) from before the 70s. I've never heard of Geiger counters showing barely any radioactivity on uranium, depression or custard glass, but I suppose accidents could happen. Maybe if a piece was glowing on its own or blinds you under a blacklight, I'd be concerned, but if you've heard of a case where the glass caused harm, I'd love to hear more.

    I recently acquired a UG ashtray, about 4.5 in diameter that fits nicely in the round, open base of a very old cast-iron desk lamp I repaired. Does anyone know a source for a general dating of the UG ashtray, or maybe the lamp? (Oddly, the lamp has no detectable manufacturer engravings or markings on it, but has been tentatively identified as being from the "Art Nouveau" period.)

    • @BackPorchAntiques

      That sounds very cool! Unfortunately, the only way to date the glass is either through a marking/label or stylistically. The same would be for the base. I think, by the way you described it, you're probably correct in your assumption.

      I actually just use the Amazon pocket black lights. I know there are some people who prefer a specific bandwidth, but it's not necessary for my purposes.

      Thank you for your quick and helpful response. I've inherited my latemother-in-laws collection of antique glass (miniaturre oil lamps, cruets, glass shoes, toothpick holders...most more than 100 years old). Just now learning about testing for the uranium content.

    Is it dangerous if it breaks?
    Do you have to claim the package as hazardous if you ship it overseas?

    • @BackPorchAntiques
      @BackPorchAntiques  8 месяцев назад

      It's my understanding that it's not dangerous unless heavily ingested. I am no expert, however. That may be a question for a doctor or a scientist. Also, I have never heard of anyone having to claim it as hazardous shipping.

      I was looking for info on Geiger counters for uranium glass and Fiestaware; came across a Reddit thread talking about UV lights and Geiger counters for Uranium glass.
      It said uranium glass responds at 395 nm, but manganese glass not so much.
      At 365 mm, uranium and manganese glass glows. But lead, cadmium and selenium glass also glow at 365. Thread didn't mention what the other glasses did at 395.

    • @BackPorchAntiques

      It’s a lamp or flashlight that emits ultraviolet A (UVA) light and a small amount of visible light. Simply put, the uranium in the glass reacts to the different type of light.

It was all stored for nearly 50 years in my brother’s law office attic. He recently passed and so it was left to my sister and me. I have a matching pair of wicker rockers from the 1800’s. The backs have springs filled horsehair and the seats are the same. So much stuff, I have to sell much of it. Rockwood, Roseville, depression glad carnival glass, tons of it.
