What I remember about the Tanooki Suit as a child is the pure frustration of obtaining such an OP item only to lose it permanently after getting hit by some random enemy within 20 seconds
I remember those times too but when I got more skill I was able to play with Tanooki many levels in row without loosing him. The sane situation is with Hammer suit, you just need enaough skill to enjoy such power :)
8:54 Actually you CAN Tanuki the Bowser lasers. You just have to attack the right place on them. If I remember correctly, the statue laser we see in your video is one you need to attack a bit higher up.
@@ethervagabond Although not as criminally underused as the shoe, the hammer suit definitely is too rare and too powerful to actually use when you actually get one.
Same! I have literally been playing this game since the day it came out in the US, and I never realized that turning into the statue midair lets you stomp previously unstompable enemies! My mind is so blown right now
7:50 - As if hefting this guy around wasn't straining enough. Love the video, though! I never could keep the Tanooki Suit for more than a single level, so it's awesome to see what things you can crush and what you can't.
Big Bertha is what Boss Bass is called underwater. Also, Boss Bass, and, by extension, Big Bertha, both CAN, in fact, be killed by Tanooki Mario in its Statue form, but, like the Thwomp and Lava Lotus, it has a unique hit box that has to be hit just right. You could probably do it easier via by using the Game Genie, Pro Action Replay, or Gameshark devices on a particular system, as well as enabling a permanent Tanooki Mario code.
"We're experiencing some technical difficulties, due to Darby making a horrible pun about Boomerang Bros. Please stand by until we get the issue resolved."
2:46 technically you can tanook them, something is tanooked if it can be touch by the tanooki suit (if tanooki mario in statue form dosen't fall trough the enemy) and there is interaction like bouncing on it but damage is optional so koopalings can be tanooked
@@BlueTelevisionGames the tanook is not always a one stomp kill, it's not like a nuclear bomb and the koopalings still get damage and are interacted with so they are tanooked
This was a great video! I remember playing my NES, beating the game, and playing it on the "Hard Mode" with all of my collected Items. I did a bunch of the experiments you showcased, and found that Tanooki and Hammer Mario are the most "athletic" suits in the early games. Alternate ducking abilities, the cool ways to kill many enemies that only Invincibility Stars could, and the badass aesthetics of the suits make them absolute necessities.
@@BlueTelevisionGames Enjoyed the video though :)! I liked the effort that went into discovering the interactions with each enemy, including the ones that required timing.
Wow, there's a lot of stuff I didn't know you could Tanooki stomp. I'm pretty surprised. Thwomps, Podobos, the disco ball lookin things, the lava flower spitting things, the rocket engine things.
Jelectros and Munchers are treated like blocks by the game rather than enemies/items, which is probably why it doesn't work on them. Super weird that it just passes through Ptooies like that, though. I wouldn't have expected that, considering it hits regular Piranha Plants and even Lava Lotuses.
There is always a heavier, bigger rock to crush the rock! I guess. Except the Tanuki is a smaller rock... okay yeah that doesn't make any sense at all.
Thank you for making this video! I wasn't sure if I could get past the Nippers in 6-5 this way, so I guess that saves me some trouble... shame it doesn't work though.
@@BlueTelevisionGames I found your videos while I was going back to grad school and I have good memories with BTG games and going back and hanging out prior to the entire pandemic thing. All of the Tanookable enemies have one major thing in common: they are all objects with sprites associated with them. You can't Tanook Jelectros or Munchers because these are part of the background layer and actually a special form of block. In fact if you somehow hit a Muncher from the side with your tail (not possible in the retail game without cheats but possible in some ROM hacks), it will turn into a dead block (like a spent ? block). Blooper Nanny, Fire Chomp, and Fire Snake are a different class of enemy: one with a "head" and a "tail" of smaller sprites. Only the head can be Tanook'd (or suffer any other kind of attack), even if some of the "tail" pieces can split off and do their own thing. Fun fact about Fire Chomp: if it runs out of flames from its tail, it will still chase Mario and eventually explode like a Bob-omb. Nerve-wracking stuff.
7:32 - Darby, but, if you were to jump into The Goomba Shoe while in Tanooki Suit Statue Form, you end up making Mario completely invincible, despite the fact, that, in Statue form, Mario, unfortunately, cannot travel through Warp Pipes while in the shoe.
Jesus Christ. I forgot how many scary enemies there were in this game. The big fish, the walking, tiny flame, the ball that spits fireballs. This was a fun video. 😁 it was outside the box. Ive always wondered what a Tanooki suit was actually capable of. Then again, i could never keep a tanooki for longer than 1 level. Haha!
Darby...damage counts as a hit from the tanooki statue, even if it has the same amount of DMG as a simple stomp, plus you still kill the koopal-lings in 3 hits, making them "Death by Tanooki stomp."
with the Tanooki statue you can stomp and kill the sparks of the explosion itself of a Bob-omb too if you hit the explosion from above on its "head" 😅😂
When I was young this was my second game next to super mario world anyway my godmum used to tell me the tanooki suit was bad cuz she didn't know how to use it When i found out how to use it i tried to teach her and she still doesn't know and won't use it
