In my opinion, todays music has the wonderfulness of todays console audio capabilities, and the old ones are Just as great for maintaining quality while delivering unique soundtrack to the table. Both ages of video game music are great, no bias.

You play the score from uncharted on a subway and nobody is going to recognize it, but you play an iconic Mario Brothers, or Sonic theme and it's instantly recognizable, because of the old consoles limits in sound capabilities, the music compositions were meant to be a little more on the "catchy" side, as opposed to the dramatic side of the games you mentioned, and it gives those old songs that certain nostalgia that I haven't seen matched since the 16 Bit console era

I know plenty of people who would recognize Skyrim's song or Halo's at any given time. 8bit music is often catchy, but there were many game songs back then that many people wouldn't recognize. I think it's safe to say that there are recognizable and catchy songs in both eras. It's not fair to put down modern music.

This is how video games used to get their music back in the old days. The video games couldn't play music on their own, so someone with a piano used to have to provide music for you.
