NATE REDO OF HEALER REACTION PLEASE!!!!
couldn't you have watched this with someone else?
React to Alternatehistoryhub's what if the communists lost the chinese civil war
Oversimplified ha also done the Russian Revolution and the Nepoleonic wars
Fun fact, when the soviets found out that JFK got assassinated, they panicked and fully cooperated with the U.S. by giving them every piece of information they had on the assassin.
my therapist visited germany during the soviet union and she said one time she flashed the peace sign to an armed Russian guard and he flashed it back which I thought was cool
I think it's pretty interesting how Johnny Cash was the first American to learned that Stalin died
How did he though?
@@anyathepanther7977 when he was in the air force his job was to listen in on and decipher Russian communications
@@JamesRhed935 oh yeah, I tend to forget that celebrities had to serve too at some point.
4:23 there you go.
Thanks Caleb
Part of the reason why America didn't invade North Vietnam was because thery were afraid that it would draw in China, in the same way that invading North Korea had drawn in China during the Korean War. But yeah. Because of how dependent the Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces in the south were on resources from the north, invading the north was one of the only ways America could have won.
The other way was to deploy enough troops to the South to fight the guerrillas effectively, which America and its allies never did. That's one of the inherent problems with fighting guerrillas. The sheer amount of resources needed to win. The South Vietnamese, Americans, South Koreans, Australians, New Zealanders, etc. deployed vast numbers of troops. Estimates for their total strenght was, for most of the war, over 1 million soldiers. The highest estimate I've heard of their peak strength is 1.4 million. And, despite how many that is, it was not enough. To effectively fight a guerrilla force the size of the one they were facing they would have needed to deploy between 3 million and 4 million troops. It would have required a World War 2 level of effort to win.
I know it sounds ridiculous to say that America didn't put enough effort into winning the Vietnam War, but they really didn't. They spent a lot of effort fighting the war, but not winning it. Because the way they fought it was not going to bring them victory. It was effort spent on the wrong things. It was wasted effort. And people died pointlessly because of it.
Its asymetric Warfare
NOTHING has been able to beat it yet.
@@jameskarg3240 Yup.
I really like this comment. It highlights most of the problems with the Vietnam war, CORRECTLY, unlike other people and talking tree memes.
33:37 There was an article in 2008 after Arkhipov's death that began "If you were born after 1962, thank this man"
Your history teacher sounds like a cool guy.
He was.
Horrible news to hear about your mother, Nate.
I wish her the best of luck during and after surgery.
Not to overlook that both Nixon and Reagan were flawed men, but it would be nice to get some world leaders nowadays that are a bit more "human" like they were.
Lmao
Come on, man. Thats like saying wether you told me if i do cocaine or not.

Damn Nate. Prayers for your mother🙏

5:27 Micah: I'll kill them all. *gets melee & gun weapons ready against his nightmare*
in his own words Gorbechav even said that Chernobyl disaster was one of the main reasons the soviet rule was over
Can you imagine how heartwarming it was to the east Germans when the guards refused to shoot. These men were selected based on how political they were so they had to be hard-line communists and even they basically said "you know what? Fuck this wall let's go"
Since you brought up Trotsky, I recommend Alternate History Hub's video on him.
(There are technically two of them, but I recommend just watching the newer version.)
Yep. He was a loon himself. Just of a diferent kind than Stalin, but still really bad.
Aw man and here i was hoping he was only a 2 or 3
Actually I recommend you keep talking in the middle of the videos, as someone who wants to learn more info about the smaller details in events throughout history. I like hearing interesting facts I have not heard about or another persons view on things and you provide both really well. Oh and great videos as always, keep it up.
I usually skip ad breaks in videos but I never do with OverSimplified, always makes these little skits and his set ups come out of nowhere. Gotta respect that hustle.
Death of Stalin wasn't really that accurate. Like death of Beriya had an official trial and then his was shot, while in the film his "trial" was in some old garage and then they burned his doby right on the spot. Or like film has Stalin's repression lists, while in reality they were abolished few years prior (Not sure about prior to what - WW2 or death of Stalin).
The film does make a point of power stuggle after Stalin's death, but there are these details that does make difference if you want to look at this film as a historical reference, which it is not it, it is a comedy in a historical setting with historical characters. And yes, this film was banned in Russia after a week of it's release.
Also the film is based on what is taught in British schools, so it probably does have a fair share of biases.
my old freshman social studies teacher had a chunk of the Berlin wall in his classroom, when I asked if that was what I thought it was and he said yes, I got super stoked.
I recommend watching or reacting to the video review of The Death of Stalin by History Buffs. It's pretty great. Even corrects the things the movie gets wrong from what happens
I love this man for knowing his history when i brag about history everyone calls me a bloody freakshow
I had a relative in America (keep in mind this is my cousin and their father was born and raised outside of the USA) call me a "slave to the monarchy" and a "communist" because I made fun of Trump.
Now, I'm not overly bright at the best of times... but I'm pretty sure I can't be both of those things at the same time lol
what country?

Hey I wouldn’t blame you on trump he was bad
And your not slave don’t say that
@@mauricehaskins8403 Right, because Naptime Joe is such a great step in the right direction.
On the subject of the OP, I much prefer Trump to Biden, and even I think that calling you a “slave to the monarchy” and communist is dumb.
Are you guys ever going to play ARK: Survival Evolved?
Sorry to hear about your mom. My mom had a double knee replacement and ya the recovery is tough. My mom has since passed of heart failure and I always tell ppl appreciate your mom and enjoy the time you have with her. I know I'd give anything to be able to call her and hear her voice again. Anyway I grew up in the 80s and I remember the cold war well. Anything evil was communist, we had nuclear drills in school and it dominated tv and movies. It was quite the time
The journey continues.
Hope your mother is well. Keep up the good work
16:04 Thank you, now neither can we :D

*I SEE RED*
We build a wall and made the Russians pay for it. If u go to Berlin u will see the divide in the lighting. There is white light in one side and yellow on the other. I am from Germany if u couldn’t tell.
15:59 I can't unsee this
Interestingly, Trotsky actually was a *more radical* communist than Stalin ever was, and served as the head of the clique known as the Left Communists before his exile. He believed in an idea known as "Permanent Revolution," or the belief that the capitalists and reactionaries of the world would never be satisfied with leaving a socialist island alone, and so the Revolution could NEVER end until all nations on earth, or at least all important ones, had their own revolutions. To suit this purpose, Trotsky believed in a program of MASSIVE industrialization and collectivization, to fuel the inevitable series of wars and interventions that would be needed to achieve this. If that sounds familiar, that's because Stalin once his power was secure and he no longer needed the support of Zinoviev and Bukharin stopped supporting the New Economic Program and used a *toned down* version of the plan Trotsky had made, because while Stalin was not stupid enough to try to take over the world, he knew that eventually someone big would invade them, and his idea of "Socialism in One Country" therefore still demanded the Union could defend itself (and naturally that it could opportunistically occupy nations around it to prop up its own side) . Trotsky being remembered as a softer communist is almost entirely based on the idea that Lenin himself was anything other than a brutal tyrant who died too soon to be remembered as such and Trotsky was his preferred successor, and on his criticisms of the USSR after his exile, when the party had turned on him and he began shit talking them out of spite.
On the topic of Stalin's morality, the man was surprisingly complicated on a personal level. He was by all accounts a loving husband to his first wife and a good father to all but the oldest of his children. People who talked with him often discuss how human he seemed, despite knowing he could have them murdered in a heartbeat.
Ah yes another oversimplified reaction
I always say this, and I'll say it here. Vietnam War was recreated in Afghanistan
I know that this is from OverSimplified but MacArthur never promised Truman that the Chinese wouldn't get involved in Korea. When the two men met for the first and only time on Wake Island, MacArthur was uncharacteristically cautious in his response to Truman when asked about a possible Chinese involvement in the war. He basically told Truman that it wasn't his job as the commander of the war to gauge the intension of another country not yet involved in the war. Which is true and in hindsight should have stopped right there. But he did tell Truman that IF China decided to get involved, they would be no match for our air power and get annihilated. All China did in the Korean war was the same thing that the Soviets did in WWII, throw millions of people at the enemy. On a side note, Douglas MacArthur is the most popular American in South Korea to this day because of the Incheon Landing which saved S. Korea. Everyone in the US military at that time tried to talk him out of the operation because Incheon was arguably the worst possible place for an amphibious landing on this planet. In the end everyone was blinded by the success of the landing and thought MacArthur could do no wrong.
45:53 I feel compelled to mention Stanislav Petrov at this part. Like Arkhipov before, he was also a man, who saved the world from getting nuked. There is a film (or if you are a freedom loving yank patriot: movie) about that whole incident (made in 2014) called The Man who Saved the World. Checks it out. Petrov was in that as well (he passed away in 2017). Long story short, in 1983, somewhat after that korean Airliner was shot down, a soviet early-warning system reported the lauch of one intercontinental ballistic missile with four more missiles behind it,US bases. An officer, who was on duty at that time at that early-warning system, Stanislav Petrov, suspected that it may be a false alarm (which it was), so rather than relaying it to his superiors, he waited for corroborating evidence that the missiles were indeed lauched. As it turned out, he was right. No missiles wee launched. That was the second time the world got close of nuclear apocalypsis. This story is not well known, which is just sad. Watch the film. Greetings from Hungary
If memory serves, his logic was that "if America is sending missiles our way there's going to be more than five. Probably a false alarm."

Nothing bad ever happens to the Kennedy’s!
You said Truman when you meant MacArthur XD
Yeah. I was tired and got my names mixed up. It happens.
Fucking hell I'd love for the rest of the cast to react to The Death of Stalin... ZHUKOV IS AMAZING
Keepin' it cool with this early comment
I'd suggest the video on the Russian Revolution too
There are nuclear Mistels unaccounted for?! 🤯
Warheads, but yeah. They're called Broken Arrow incidents, and they're inevitable when there's a nuclear arsenal in excess of over 20,000 worldwide, you know? Or, when there was. I can't recall how many are in service in modern times.
6:36 Lenin didnt want to Trotsky to rule USSR, Trotsky was most radical between Trotsky,Stalin,Kamenev and Zinoviev. Trotsky want to start world communist revolution, and support all communists in the entire world, yes Stalin is radical too but bc of him USSR won WW2
Yes sure, just because of him. Not because if heroic actions of soldiers protecting their home. Дебил.
I hope your mother has recovered ok since the surgery
One minor correction...containment was Truman's, but the domino theory was Eisenhower's. ✌
Also, I do not believe the US could have "won" the Vietnam War by invading the North. For one thing, it would have made us the aggressor in the war, and completely shed even the thin moral justification that we were just trying to defend the South from North Vietnamese aggression. Had we invaded the North, we doubtless would have lost all of our allies, who would not have wanted to follow us into that kind of war. In addition, I do not think the US could have won that way even had we committed our entire military at a level more like World War 2, as others have mentioned. All we would have done is initiate a war of extermination with the Vietnamese that would probably still be going on today. As you rightly pointed out, there is nothing like the determination of an enemy that is fighting for their own home territory...we almost surely could never defeat the Vietnamese unless we essentially killed all of them...and that is no victory at all, if you ask me. 🖖✌
👍👍👍
There are a lot of small problems with these 2 videos from Oversimplified, things that are reported out of order, and details that he chose to leave out that should have been left in...but only 2 things that I really think are major issues.
For one thing, his take on Sputnik is basically the same mythology that everyone repeats, but the fact was that the US had no real desire to be first in space. The Eisenhower Administration actually saw the Soviets achieving orbit first as a good thing, since it would establish the "Freedom of Space." In addition, one of the very few voices that was pushing hard for the USA to be first to achieve orbit was Von Braun, and it is not surprising that Eisenhower would not tend to follow advice from a former Nazi. Von Braun and his team at ABMA could have reached orbit in 1955 or 1956 if doing so had been a priority for National Authorities.
The other really big problem is that Oversimplified did not even mention the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Gorbachev himself has said that Chernobyl was the single most important event in the fall of the Soviet Union. 🖖✌
I mean there really is a lot of important stuff Oversimplified left out, but thats the thing its called Oversimplified. History has so many point of views, facts, and minor details. Its not easy to learn or say what they all are, which is why history class and simple videos like theses don't do that. This way history is still being told and everyone can understand. Is it always 100% accurate, no. But its also not easy to be always accurate and it does more good than harm, teaching people basic facts that anyone can understand in this way.
@@djjamz2887 If you talk about Gorbachev and his reforms, you must also mention Chernobyl...the former does not happen without the latter. Even a single sentence would be enough...but some mention of it is essential. I give Oversimplified full credit, I would never try to do what he did and would no doubt do a much worse job of it...but that does not mean that he made no mistakes, including ones that he deserves real criticism for making. Leaving out Chernobyl is a huge omission.
@@iKvetch558 I do agree that he should have mention the Chernoybl disaster. I also agree that theses videos aren't without flaws, and even someone like me, who is not the most educated on this stuff. Found a few things he really could have added. I just want to give credit, where it is due instead of trying to be nitpicky, which I see so many people do with history in general and what at first seem like you where doing. My bad.
@@djjamz2887 No worries...I try to make it clear that I do not want to nitpick every detail in his videos, but I understand that sometimes it seems like I might be doing that. I think this series in the Cold War and his series on World War II seem to have the most issues, but even those videos are really excellent. But World War II and the Cold War are the time periods of history that I have studied the most, so it is likely I see more issues in those videos due to having studied them more. ✌

Theoretically, communism should be the ideal system for the world, in practice however, it quickly falls apart, as humanity as a whole is inherently selfish.
And that doesnt have to be inherently negative.
If your NOT selfish, you basically kill yourself through Altruism-overdosing
