The CANDY BOMBER 🍬 is my favorite part of this story. Just a random act of kindness that just spiraled into becoming one of the most memorable parts of the biggest humanitarian effort in history ... just ... legendary.
I love how he was rewarded for his actions too, after it was discovered he was making unauthorized drops the man in charge of the airlift realized the potential of this sort of goodwill towards the children of Berlin and commanded the candy drops expanded and organized Gail to be sent home on a press tour "the Candy bomber" they called him! 🍫🍭🍬
Shows how impactful small acts of kindness can go. This is the case in day to day life. So always try to spread some love like that to those around you. You never know what people are going through and even just some kind words or gestures can make someone's whole day.
Y’all remembered the end credits clip again! One of my absolute favorite of his end credits clips (attached to probably my favorite video of his so far) is his video on the 11th Airborne Division, AKA The Angels, the only airborne division assigned to the Pacific theater
General Tunners solution to the whole problem really can't be overstated - he came up with the idea of air corridors and multi-level air corridors which the entire world still uses to this day at every single airfield and airport. It's the whole reason aircraft can take off and land every minute or two throughout the day, and the only reason global air travel is even possible at the scale it now is. It also got adopted (minus the multi-levels) by the shipping industry for cargo and tanker vessels to make global shipping more efficient and able to move even more tonnage than ever. Before his solution everyone just flew or travelled on the oceans in any direction they fancied, with no real control or restrictions on height, direction, or how they got from A to B. Which works if there's not many aircraft in the skies or ships on the oceans, but falls apart big time the moment that level increased ... which it did after the war ... to an insane degree. He really did become a Main Character of History, if he wasn't already one to begin with. And yet not only is this entire episode of history BARELY even mentioned, let alone discussed and taught in detail, his amazing contribution to modern society and our modern way of life is all but entirely forgotten and overlooked. Which is beyond unfair and unjust.
Gail Halvorsen is one of my favorite people I've learned about. I've seen interviews with him and he always seemed like one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. Sadly, we did lose him not too long ago. He died on February 16, 2022, at the ripe old age of 101.
If I remember correctly we in germany called them "Rosienenbomber" in english "Raisinbombers". But it mainly refers to the allied planes for that exact mission.

I got to meet him once. I was like 9 or 10 and had gone to an air show and he was a special guest there.

Another great story told by The Fat Electrician. One of my favorites.
As Team Fortress 2’s Soldier says to the Heavy sometimes, “Stars and Stripes beats Hammer and Scycle, look it up!”

It sounded like he was ready to go home. I'm glad we had him for as long as we did. God bless the Candy Bomber! 😊

The Berliners called the airlift the Rosinenbimber, or Raisin Bombers. On account of the sweets being dropped.
