As a beginner 'older' player, I think I can do this. I bet in a week or 2 I'll have the strumming and easier chords down. With backup beats, this would be so fun. Thanks so very much. And sorry for being late to the chat.
You're a very good teacher my brother.....Next time a sharp down stroke on the "And" For the double its a sharp down, sharp up with palm muting BLESS UP!! 🎸😎
I heard Tom Morrello say on Howard Stern that when he started to learn he played slow over and over and got faster and faster over time. It’s important to play the chords correctly. The switches will get smoother and smoother the more you play. The ticket is putting the time in. I’m so greatful for guys like Sean here posting videos like this. Well done!
Just to let you know, this is not reggae as reggae musicians or fans would recognise it. His technique is wrong. If you want the real deal see Steve Golding, Tuff Lion, or John Jesus on RUclips. Most of the others are misguided
Cmaj slid upto 5th fret is my favorite chord. Its like franks red hot sauce. I put that s*** in everything Shannon hoon used that a lot, thats where i learned it
Totally fair, I just think for absolute beginners (like this video is geared towards) hitting a backbeat with an upstroke is better to build rhythmic counting. Most beginners I've taught have a hard time keeping a count straight without having a down on the 1.
Pretty good lesson. I think what you said about upstrokes in a previous comment makes sense. I really that reggae sound because, even though it’s more of a rhythm thing with chord progressions like this, it still implies an underlying melody but it’s in how you play it. Like, you let it come through the percussiveness if that makes any sense, On a somewhat related note, there’s a reggae section in “Song 4” by Babymetal that practically and hilariously comes out of nowhere. I forget if Takayoshi Ohmura used upstrokes or downstrokes when demonstrating it in a video lesson years ago but he did seem to play the same chord in a different voicing on the second pass.
Whenever I want to get that Reggae vibe I just gotta say my name but this Sean Paul says girl get busy when it's time for the island vibe!Cheers Sean Daniel!!
Nice playing. 💭Observation / Note: an important nuance of some reggae guitar is the downstroke… this video is showcasing an upstroke on the skanks / hits. The tone tends to be fuller with a downstroke. Upstrokes are great on those ghost rhythms.

I never leave a negative comment but this is very wrong information. This is absolutely not the right way to play reggae skank. It is played with a downstroke NOT a upstroke. I can not believe how many people got this wrong. The sound is created with three instruments the paino guitar and hihat. and sometimes even with a organ as a 4e instrument. I think this is where the confusion comes from.
Sean Daniels, he is my go to for reggae music. Lmao Cool lesson, I apologise i havent been around to learn and bust your stones. I will catch up with the videos later, when i can have a few, and I can sit down and unwind
I love your videos. However, I just watched yours back to back with another: ruclips.net/video/svKTINN65oA/видео.html&ab_channel=XyanGuitar . I always assumed that the strum would be on an upstroke as it was on the 'And', but watch the video of the link provided and maybe you might change your thoughts too. @@seandaniel23 sure my brother!! I learned a lot from so I might as well return it!
Yes, downstroke on the 'and' sounds better and more reggae-like to me.
Tuff Lion teaches the opposite - reggae music is played with downward strokes, using all six slightly muted strings :]

Ugh. Came here to say this. You're awesome Sean but watch Stick Figure, the Movement or even Sublime: all down strokes.

Light-behind-couch. Smart move. BTW let’s make a reggaetón
Just for a little info Peter Tosh would keep a wah on and play with the toe down to get more percussive sound.
a way to do that with an eq would be to boost the mids (i think)
In 8 minutes you taught me every Bob Marley song.....cool!

Love the Texas T
Very nice and informative
Thank you so much! Not sure you remember but I asked for a reggae video years ago. You rock dammit
I heard the upstroke is for calypso
Reggae is mostly based on downstrokes at the "And". Upstrokes sound only reggaeish but actually aren't used in original Reggae Music & Rocksteady.

Yep, reggae is always on the downbeat, calypso is on the upbeat. The most important thing is to downbeat on the 2 and 4 of the 4/4 timing.
