This is certainly not VH at his best but there are some astonishingly musical moments. I think the performance of this piece is perhaps the best of the Tokyo concert. Thank god he was able to come back -- two years later and off antidepressants -- in fine form.
Adam symborski I think the chromatic scale at 4:13 to the E is what the piece was building up for. That is THE climax and tragedy of this entire piece. It is like Chopin is suffocating under water and a friend lifts him up to speak to him.
I like this version. Played like a human. I turned off the Valentia one after the long ass pause. This one is nice even though it's not perfect. I think I heard on the other video that Chopin composed for himself. Well, I like this version because I think Horowitz played for himself.
Chopin was in a way outside of time, and I think he composed this piece at the universe’s end. However, I don’t think he would like Horowitz’s practice of tossing in the gratuitous mezzo-staccato passage when legato is clearly right.

OK. Not as good as his earlier recordings, but so what. He still does these Etudes better than anyone else. the man was a genius.
