  • Recorded in June 1983. Despite Horowitz's inaccuracies, there are moments of genius in this performance. Horowitz was a master indeed.

This was the first Japan recital where he was sick and overly medicated. But he tears your heart out. Such depth of emotion. I can imagine this is how Liszt must have played at the end.

According to the biographers, this was the last piece played on the piano by Liszt in Weimar, seeing the near death, when he attended the Bayreuth Wagner´s Festival for the last time, and he died

Alan Walker; the absolutely most moving biographies of Liszt. Thanks for posting this. I was just wondering what was the last piece Liszt before his death. Thx.

@@realitywins3325 Yes, according to Allan Walker research and diaries of Franz Liszt and his pupils.

This could not be more moving and pure expressive. Wonderful. The perfect melancholy. Pure sadness.

This is certainly not VH at his best but there are some astonishingly musical moments. I think the performance of this piece is perhaps the best of the Tokyo concert.
Thank god he was able to come back -- two years later and off antidepressants -- in fine form.

    4:22 - devastating

Adam symborski I think the chromatic scale at 4:13 to the E is what the piece was building up for. That is THE climax and tragedy of this entire piece. It is like Chopin is suffocating under water and a friend lifts him up to speak to him.

I like this version. Played like a human. I turned off the Valentia one after the long ass pause. This one is nice even though it's not perfect. I think I heard on the other video that Chopin composed for himself. Well, I like this version because I think Horowitz played for himself.

Chopin was in a way outside of time, and I think he composed this piece at the universe’s end. However, I don’t think he would like Horowitz’s practice of tossing in the gratuitous mezzo-staccato passage when legato is clearly right.
