  • I'm asked "why do you not just shoot digital?" and "why do you shoot film?"
    This is my long answer.

I only shoot B and w FILM. I do not have a digital camera. I use film Nikon, Leica and medium format Pentax67 cameras.

You may enjoy the Leica Discord group where Leica users chat and share pictures. Lots of film shooters. It’s a bit of a younger crowd, but very global and lots of diversity. Thanks for posting.

Nice video! I was looking at review of the Artisan 35mm M lens when your video showed in my feed! Good reasons for using film.
I started with my dad's Brownie got really hooked when my uncle came to visit from Germany with a Leica 3F! Later I got a 3F plus an R system, 3-M's lots of lenses for both. I have Canon EOS- M, only digital, couldn't get on board with digital Leica, but did like their Monochrome. I still have dozens of rolls of film. But guess what? now retired I used my OnePlus 12 phone and free editing apps, got to K.I.S.S. Film chemistry makes me sick, and the time factor, plus yes, running through airports a pain! I once missed a flight because TSA thought my Leica tabletop tripod was a gun! Did an landscape assignment in another state, the editor wanted to see results from a roll, went to local 'pro' lab, they ruined the slides! So yea, love the medium, don't miss the process, pun intended! Keep the faith!🥂

Great video! Is it fair to say that you "learned" photography on digital, and then took the training wheels off?

Yes… I learned a lot with my first film cameras, too … but I really took off shooting Fuji digital cameras … then reached a point where I felt limited and needed to switch to film to get the look and shooting experience I wanted

FP4+ at EI of 1000 … pushed about 3 stops … and then contrast boosted in Capture One with a set black and white point.

Here’s a quote from him: I started out working with negatives with a medium-format Pentax camera. About halfway through, in 2008, I switched to a digital camera because I was in constant fear that security machines at airports could destroy my films. A friend assured me that digital images were now of good quality. When I went digital, I switched to a Canon camera and I found the quality was much better than the medium-format negatives. In the final prints, you can see no difference because I have worked with one film, Kodak Tri-X film, all my life, and we were able to reproduce the exact grain of that film in the digital image. We also created a way of working that was no different from how I had always worked. I recorded everything on digital cards just as I did with film and, from these images on the cards, contact sheets and prints were made for me. Those I selected were then made into negatives.

I was tempted to run a few rolls of film through my SLR, then I looked at the price of film. I didn't even bother checking development costs. Film is dead.

You may want to tell Kodak, who is hiring 200 chemists and engineers so they can grow their film division. … and Pentax who is releasing a film camera. … and Ilford and Ferrania who are barely keeping up with orders … and the new film labs that are opening their doors in 2024 … you are right, it’s hard to just quickly figure out how to do it cheaply, but it can be done

Check out Royal We Film Lab in Oakland … their film prices are about as low as it goes, and I can get you 27% off lab services, if you want it … and they are already one of the cheapest, if you want scans … there are cheaper places if you don’t care about high-res scans.
