Thanks for being the only reviewer to explain that the hook thing couldn't be inserted without battery. I got one recently and thought it was just broken and have been looking at reviews to see if I was just doing something wrong
If I wanted to be generous, I'd argue the LR1 Batteries were chosen because they're smaller than AA or AAA batteries. Perhaps there wasn't much room in the chasis to fit a larget battery chamber between the motor, firing mechanism, and other stuff.
Ordered it online, waited an additional 3 days for the batteries to come in, finally get the batteries in and the motor inside didn't even work. So I am now stuck with a broken grapnel with a string fully out and batteries that go toward nothing else in my house...
Why the heck would they use uncommun batteries to power this grapnel? That was a very weird decision, what's wrong with double A batteries? Very strange!

For anyone curious, LR1 batteries are readily available at Target and Home Depot.
