Derrick is one of the rare DJ's which I cannot just listen while he is playing... I need to see his hands... that stuff how he is playing, choosing music, jumping from one style to another, moving knobs, effects, pot, etc., all this makes his sets an inspiration for me like you can't "unseen" what you just saw :bomb:
he is a rare dj in all aspects of his playing. He is able to evoke energy into your soul with his track selection and toying with mixing. He has such variation in his tracks that it makes you want to dance your ass off. He plays with all genres of house, tech, techno and makes them all seem like one genre. dude is a master. The soul in his tracks is insane!!
Well said,....first saw Derrick May back in 2004 in Eindhoven. There he played one of his best all time set (ruclips.net/video/UT3Ad9-ojmM/видео.html), and i still get goosebumps thinking back about that night, the music was great but what stood out was his presence behind the decks.....and MC shouting: Derrick May in COMPLETE CONTROL..... Indeed impossible to UNSEE!
I love Derrick May. He just does not give a fuck. None of this working out a slow building set, no peaks and troughs, no 'please the crowd, continuous vibe', no Mixed-In-Fucking-Key. Just one great tune after another with no respect for flow. Proper seat of the pants DJing. True pioneer in his element. :)

For those who don't know, Derrick May was friends with Mike James, Thomas Barnett, Blake Baxter and Eddie Fowlkes and had them come over to his place to use his equipment and record tracks. Derrick then stole their tracks, including Nude Photo from Barnett and released them under Rhythim Is Rhythim. The piano section from Strings of Life was performed by Mike James and although he was credited, Derrick May has never paid Mike any royalties. I've seen conversations between Derrick and Mike where Derrick promised to pay Mike and nothing materialised. Chez Damier introduced Mike to Derrick in to 80s and in a later conversation, Derrick promised on their friendship to pay Mike his portian of the royalties. Again, nothing materialised. There's also women coming forward internationally to speak about their negative experiences with Derrick. We're talking about some serious allegations. Derrick's career rode off those tracks, which weren't his. Mike's exposing Derrick and a book is due to go on sale with a full expose. Coincidentally, Mike has started to receive threatening calls and messages. I read an excerpt from a book Mike James posted on his page: Phase 3 - Der Klang Der Familie had just been released on Tresor back in 92' and Derrick May may went to see Dr. Motte. A brand new pressing of the track was playing on a turntable. Derrick may snatched it, and took it away with him. A few weeks later the same track was released on Transmat. Phase 3 & Dr Motte had no idea. Derrick ripped the track from vinyl and made new pressings that were released under Transmat without permission. They never got paid and Derrick never apologised. Absolutely despicable.
maestro! much love and big respect 🥁💪🏼💙
