I was looking for the backstory of why the Jon Stewart Show got canceled. I found out that Marilyn Manson’s performance on the show upset a lot of people who asked that the show gets canceled. Manson burned a Bible onstage after performing 3 songs from their first album. The last show was with David Letterman who said to Jon, “Don’t confuse cancellation for failure” as well as telling him, “I’ll see you in 3 years”. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart aired on January 11, 1999.

The move to national syndication killed the show. In 1994, Paramount was acquired by Viacom and was looking for a replacement for the outgoing Arsenio Hall, so MTV let Paramount Television take over The Jon Stewart Show. By then, the show was in a losing battle being caught up in the crossfire of a new ratings war between Leno and Letterman, both of whom had already cornered the market for a broader general audience outside its core MTV viewership it had to appeal to that was simply in low supply.

Unless they cut it out of the broadcast Manson just set fire to a lunchbox (unless there was a Bible in the lunchbox lol, but this was before their Antichrist Superstar Bible burning era so I doubt it, they just looked weird so still caught up in satanic panic no doubt)

I religiously watched Beavis & Butthead back then but I don't remember this at all... It was a VERY 90's show though... I have to admit though the biggest laugh I had during it was the AT&T commercial of OJ Simpson calling his mom collect

Sorry, everybody born after 2000. The 90s were a good time and perhaps the last decade with a personality. The kids of GenX were in their 20s. Music was good and had not yet turned into processed cheese. We spoke to each other in movie and TV references. People weren't recording every minute detail of our lives, so we got away with alotta' shit. We enjoyed (sometimes weird) cartoons made for adults and music and MTV still meant something.

People in 1993 must have been like "yeah, this guy surely will become one of the most important political comedians in history who'll later suspend his career to help the veterans and many people would love to see him running for the office himself" ;)

Jesus, Howard Stern is being a total asshole here. Apart from the fact that getting him on your first show was probably a huge get back then.

Howie's shtick in those days was to insult the living daylights out of anyone who had the gumption to invite him onto their show. It was a part of his "shock-jock" image as a loutish, sex-obsessed, and rude egotist set on "destroying the uptight establishment, man"! He literally became notorious for purposely offensive on-air skits, comments, and behavior that in today's PC world would get most shows canceled before the first tweet of outrage. Jon knew full well what he was getting himself into by having Howard on as a guest. As the "Jon Stewart Show" was a fledgling program geared toward the adolescent/young-adult demo, and hosted by a near-total unknown, I'm sure it was hoped by the show's producers that Howard's appearance might help boost ratings and lend Jon some street-cred as a hip and daring media personality not unlike the "King of All Media."
This all being said, I was never a fan of Stern's preening shock-jock persona in the 1980s and '90s, a phase he has said on more than one occasion is best left forgotten! Thankfully, both he and (especially) Jon have grown leaps and bounds in the 30 years since this awkward encounter.
