This series helped me redo my own 2004 Polaris Sportsman 600. Turned into 700. Thanks for the video!!!
I can tell that this is going to be an awesome video just by the detail that he's explaining about the rings and using the steel wool to clean the interior of the cylinders and I know when he's done it's going to run like a brand new piece of equipment and it's been interesting to watch all of the troubleshooting and figuring out what's wrong with it a great series of videos thank you very much Joe for taking the time to explain everything as you go along
I told you in the first video the previous owner didn’t know what he was doing. Glad you finally tore it down and put it together correctly. Now you have a decent machine.
I am digging this rebuild. I definitely learned something new regarding the piston rings. As someone who has never rebuilt an engine, I was impressed that you knew about the taper and the orientation of the rings and the piston orientation. Great job and thanks for the content!
that's why we read the service manuals
The bolt you found in the CVT holds the ring behind the primary CVT. There is a very strong ringing when driving, I think you should look into the variator again. Thanks for the video, greetings from Ukraine!
I just wanted to say I admire your knowledge and your patience! I would probably at this point be saying ugly words and throwing Tools around but I have learned a great deal watching you build and rebuild that particular quad, Mike
Don't know if its just me but it does sound like the CVT could be a bit tighter. Revs a bit too high imo. Nice job!
May be the aftermarket primary clutch causing the high rev.
I've been telling him that thing is revving to the moon and isn't going anywhere
Yeah it’s just hitting the rev limiter
It's just you
@benschlack5814 it's not reved to the moon lol.
No worries on how many, and how long, the video parts are! They are truly educational, and entertaining. Gearheads want to see it ALL. I went thru similar on my Yamaha Warrior, that was somehow bent, fast, and uncontrollable. It almost seemed to be alive, and its mission was to kill me as painfully as possible. I pulled it in my garage last year, determined to find the problem(s), and fix them. Having zero knowledge of their construction, and even less video editing knowledge, I just recorded ALL the education trials, failures, and eventual success on getting it fixed. Having now learned some editing skills, I could likely take the hours of raw video (which are up on my microscopic youtube channel) and edit them down to about 30 minutes of video. I always look forward to your videos. Our ATV's: my 2002 Yamaha Warrior, my son's Polaris Sawtooth, my daughter's Suzuki LT80.
Seems a little gutless for a 700. Maybe you can get different weights for the clutch. It’s rattles a lot. I’m sure you just want to get rid of it though. Great video series.
It's just you.
Yeah at this point you ignore the noise and sell it lmao
jus exhasut its a 600 twin
@@TraveladvRajanSRai you evidently didn't watch the video lol.
i did all my research and the 800 is where the cams are different so it was fine for me to leave the 600 cam shaft in the block. @@leecrumble3921
There’s still something up with he clutch. There’s a noise in there still at idle and the CVT clutch isn’t expanding like it should once it gets going.
Great to see it finally fixed and running properly, but that exhaust sounds terrible, definitely needs changing in my opinion.
Clutch sounds a little off probably not weighted correctly. Engine sounds great!
It has the stock clutch got factory weights
Excellent job, Joe! That thing rips pretty good! You might want to look into lowering the CVT engagement RPM so it's not screaming all the time, and it should pull just fine as well.
Thanks for a great series on this rig!
Joe is a total novice got so many things wrong he doesn't know Jack schitt
I'd pay that if we were closer.
Great job. This series has been very informational. My wife has the 2004 Sportsman 500.
Joe One of the Best &.... one of the Best *Ring Jobs* I've Seen on RUclips. Very Educational. "You CAN Teach an Old Dog New Tricks." Thank You So Much For Doing These Videos For Us.
awesome series of videos on this repair. I watched all of them. Great to see someone share this level of troubleshooting on these machines with full video of all steps on the repair. I know how it is after spending a lot of time to repair and then when it’s all back together again, up’s, it’s not starting. Damnit, vacuum hose!!! Good job on the repair. What would you sell it for now?
What cute playful pup. It’s like he knows you’ll get it running.
That's Vinny. He's not shy at all. In fact, he loves to poop on camera .
Your knowledge and skill are impressive! But your character is what stands out most to me.
Stuff rags down in the cases when installing, in this case, pistons and the cylinders and the way you did it is the only way but when you go to install the circlips and one drops down into the cylinders you are then in for a whole new project. The reason the magnet won't stick to the valves is because they are likely stainless. Or very unlikely but titanium.
Good job. Gotta wonder how a screw got loose in that Mother Clutcher.
I have scored a few good facebook market place finds the last month, a 2000 Honda Rancher 4x4 foot shift for $50 runs stuck in gear and a 1997 Honda TRX 200 series 2 for a $100, owner said it was stuck in gear but it was the rear brakes seiezed.
I'm catching up on your past projects...recently discovered your channel. I'm so impressed with you knowledge and experience. I almost have a sense of accomplishment watching YOU fix stuff! I noticed at the 35:53 mark in this video when you were checking to see if you solved the smoking problem a burst of flame came out of the tail pipe...not sure if you noticed that on playback (you weren't standing behind the machine (like we were) but were up at the controls. Anyway, kudos to you and thanks for the education!!
You have become my favorite RUclipsr! Always good to see your new content. I don't know how you find the time to churn out these projects!!!
What's that metallic rattling/clanking? A plate loose somewhere? Would drive me nuts.. 😅 was it not audible while sitting on it? The mic might pick it up better, because when you turn around to look for smoke you can't hear it.. But on low revs, like in the beginning when backing it down from the trailer, riding on low revs between trees and second break in run when turning around by reversing. I didn't see anyone asking about it so maybe you mentioned it, apologize if I missed it!
There is so much hidden knowledge from experience that people who are new to this accidentally screw up a lot of things. These motors are complex pieces of engineering and demand a knowledge that comes with gourds and hours of experience. My hat is off to you.Your posts are amazing how detailed you are on all these screwed up items.
😊
Great work Joe… persistence paid off. Just needs a jet wash. Cheers!
This is a beaut ,but FULL of fail and trouble, good luck brother!😮🤨😫😫😫👁🙏🙏🙏👌👊🦾
Nice work and enough faults to investigate well done sounds nice
Good job 👍
Joe you should be called "professor Joe" due to your ability to troubleshoot and overcome!😅😊
Great series!
Allan in Columbia, SC
Gotta love Vinny, the quad whisperer. Run Vinny Run. 🐕🐶
I've been watching this channel every day for almost a year now learning lots of tricks and how to fix all my quads and bikes that have been sitting for 20 plus years now all of them work again i also got all kinds of new tools thanks joe for all you do merry Christmas to you and your family give viny a bone for me 😅
With your helmet on and your camera microphone is picking up a steady stream of ringing rubbing sound curious what's causing that particular sound, as if some ones rubbing a spoon around in a kettle.
Glad You got it running to a certain level of acceptability that your ok with, are you going to keep it or sell it up for another project, curious, Great Shop Performance Joe, really enjoy your shop time videos, have a great day You and Vinnie and your Wife as well.
This one was a ton of work. When it all comes together you gotta giggle. Great job my good man
Great job man putting that cylinder on had to be one big pain in the butt!! I’m hearing a high-pitched ping. When accelerating is it clutch? Probably normal.
It sounds like the exhaust to me my 85 trx125 does the same thing it's probably fine
Wow what a journey, awesome job!
Good job man! But you dont hear that ratteling?
Hey Joe ,great job tks for sharing, remember folks thats an old Quad , not like a new one, we all forget that,, hey Joe as i watch you riding the trails it looks like you need a vertical sickle to trim the trails as you ride them,, great video sir, ride safe
Wow, I'm not used to so many New parts, sure gaskets and rings, but pistons and cylinder. Great instructional video.
When checking the ring gap, you should put an old ring onto the piston the put the top of the piston down into the bore. The piston will stop on the ring and make 100% certain the ring you are measuring is perfectly straight in the bore. You also want it close to the top as a lot of bores are actually a bit tighter at the top.
Hey Joe, you amaze me, just the guy I would have working on my bike. Well done again from MIcko in the UK
According to the shop manual, the ring with the bevel (1R) should have been put in the second ring groove.
Another job very well done! Good stuff buddy! Keep up the great work!!
Good wrenching bud. I'm so glad it all worked out and the smoking stopped. Not sure you needed new pistons tho. Maybe just rings. Was the one oil ring seized? Fortunate the dropped push rod and so far out of time didn't do more damage. Turns out to be a very nice quad. A lot of work yes, but kinda typical for a previous owner without much rebuild experience. Nice work budroe. Great patience.
It's probably the loudest 4X4 'hunting' ATV I've ever heard! I'm glad you mentioned it. You're certainly not sneaking up on anything with that monster. LOL
cheap amazon muffler. i thought she sounded mean but yk i never used it for hunting. more of scarin away the animals lol
Nice video, anytime you break down an engine there is always a learning moment, and some Vinny Time
Nice job Joe 🤙🏻 thing sounds like it’s straight piped 😂
2.9K Thumbs up and when I hit the thumbs up it went to 3K whoo hooo! Great series and for going through all the steps with out throwing money at it with out the diagnosis first. Thanks!
Why do you use gasket sealer sometimes and grease other times?
Something he might have to take off multiple times and be able to reuse the gasket, like the clutch or side covers.
👌 Patience and hard work pay's off.
It's time for an oil change.
Can't wait to see the end of this one!
Love the content, brother, but hate cvt all that power goes to waste 🗑
Exhaust note was much crisper, sounded like it was well tuned and running well.
Is it just me or does it seem to be kind slow for being a 700? I used to have a 500 and that thing could go 70/ 80 mph. Maybe the clutch has a adjustment? But still runs awesome 👍
@daniel, seems like the ATV is more for work than speed.
Gear ratio, and the heavy duty racks and body parts make it appear to be for pulling and transporting stuff.
JMO
@@allan9603 ok I understand but I've forgotten to add that I've been on a 800 before and it seemed way faster than the 500 I had, this is the same quad: 600 sportsman but it was 600 turned into a 700. And it seams gutless, the clutch is probably not correctly put on and with everything else on the quad joe worked on I wouldn't be amazed if it's on wrong, joe put tons of money and work onto this quad and it's really only worth 1000 bucks. If no one noticed this was a big loss...
@@danielparsons3995 , having owned lawn equipment, farm implements, tractors, combines, ATVs...myself, I can say that there will be times when you take it in the shorts over repairs, no doubt.
Joe is not only a master at his craft, but if you ever watch him buy these bikes, trikes, ATVs...you will notice that he's quite business savvy as well.
I'm sure Joe knows the risks, but over the long run from what I've seen, he makes very good decisions.
Hey, if you think about it, we want all of Joe's toys ready for the bone yard, which means more videos for us!😂😁
I thought the same, got an 04 700 twin that will go off the top of the speedo at 70mph.
Great vid, with a rebuild you got it humming along
That land is SO WISCONSIN!!!! I'm guessing North woods, I don't want to give cities, just in case.
always wonder how many times a machine has took a shit in the middle or all the way across the field and youve had to walk back lol
Joined that FB group thanks for the information wealth.
Love the sound of the rain on the rooftop...✌🤙
when it wouldn't start and you stepped back and stared at it for awhile. i know exactly what you were feeling haha
Fantastic ❤. As well beautiful property. Thanks for the ride.
Do u got the I low gear? That thing should rip in high gear from a dig to top speed . I kno the rev high but that thing should get up to atleast 60 70 pretty quick . U need fine tune them clutches both the primary and secondary an make sure ur belt deflection is on point with a good belt . Theses should rip out the gate pretty snappy an get up to atleast 65 within seconds .
This one was quite a test. You passed with an "A" Nice work. 😎👍
I loved every part of this video/build!!
Another good deal you got there, this 1 you had to earn it though as many times as you had to take it apart , I think that’s why the original owner sold it cause he didn’t wanna take it apart again, that loud exhaust pipe would get annoying after a while for me, it kinda sounds like a snow mobile engine lol or a 2 stroke, good job bro
Coat the inside of the cylinder with oil before you insert the assembled piston.
That quad sounds like you have to run it wide open almost all the time just to dive around, This is why I love gears give me gears that I can control.
A pair of ring compressors would come in handy here. At this point in the game(several years) why you don't own these tools is odd.
Nice rebuild.🏁
Don't need them so why get them.
@@jerrywilcox9890you don't need half the tools he has. That's not the point. He doesn't need an impact but it's definitely easier and faster. That's the point of a tool
I learned something new today about the rings thank you Blessings 🙏🙏🙏
Nothing but problems? On a polaris? You don't say..... 😂. Polaris quads are the worst pieces of junk on the market. You are a courageous man joe
How did u learn so much about working on bikes. I like watching your videos. I learned a little bit from it
nice job Joe say what is going on with hover craft? ever get it back running?
Good job on that fight. Need a different primary clutch and stock exhaust. That obnoxious metallic grinding wasn't there when you first got it running in first video. Youll get it whipped. I'd be sick of that one too lol. Enjoy the videos. Same thing I do minus the videos .🇺🇸
Great job! That exhaust is LOUD and that metal rattling has to have something to do with that screw that you found in the clutch I’m guessing
That's a screw that holds the rubber seal on the back cover. Not part of the clutch.
Awesome job, I’m thinking it’s going to need a clutch kit as it’s blowing through the secondary almost immediately.
primary. secondary starts opening at about 15 mph im the old owner so ik it wasn’t a fast machine about 60 if your lucky
Back pressure is important. May wan't to put baffles back in that rig. Clutch rattle is a bit wierd. Big job.
I'd like to know why it's so loud and high pitched? I've never heard a 700cc engine sound like that...🤔
I know nothing about engines but love your videos
Cool dude you're a good mechanic to have caught some of the mistakes the last guy did the rings was a good find!
The top rings on the piston are always the tightest
Yeah maybe with chinezium parts like he uses, but quality rings should be the same size unless file to fit
Every time you put rings on a piston, you always check the ring gap. Not have I've seen them being to big or small. Did you ever have any that was to big or small of a ring gap? Nice job on this one.
Perfect finally I'm curious how much money you spent regardless you got a pretty good deal and a little bit of work
You can do it!! You can do it all the way to a positive bank account quick....
Love it, deff look into a snow plow set up for it tho
Folks, leave your equipment stock. If you want better performance buy a higher level machine. Good work
A very enjoyable series. Thanks
That sad lonely hover craft sitting neglected in the field 😟
My TRX 400 2002 Honda it's a race bike single cylinder five valves to exhaust but it's loud and it was definitely made for racing
Polaris. Bust out another thousand. Oh wait, that's boat. New owner is going to have to buy an expensive clutch soon.
I always oil the cylinder first. Just helps.
This man can fix anything..
Job well done mate!
That clutch is very noisy metal on metal. The muffler is awful. Are the exhaust manifolds tight?
Holy spaghetti will you look at all those wires 😂😂😂😂😂
Just a recommendation I'm an x car engine mechanic cars are governed by side sitting behind steering wheel so dri ers side is left passenger side is right so atv's motorcycles should be the same. Also I recommend putting oil rings on wristpin and the others on skirt.
Excellent job as always!
You use gasket maker tubes like me, punch a new hole each time you use it. lol
It does not seem to be picking up speed very well,is the clutch slipping?
It could also be the wrong belt is being ran to wide or skinny could affect speed and rpm.
Good job joe another one of the list lol sounds great 👍👌🔧🔧🔧🔧❤️
The clutch springs on that aftermarket clutch are too heavy. Causing it to hit the rev limiter before the clutch has a chance to start squeezing the shivs
