  • Two years of preparation. Two months of events. $15 million in expenses. Québec New York 2001 was set to be the most spectacular and creative expression of French-Canadian art and technology the world had yet seen. Its organizers envisioned an ambitious state-wide cultural festival that would redefine what Québec meant to her neighbors - and to the future. And it would all culminate in the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center in lower Manhattan, in the shadow of the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
The day is Monday, September 10th.
This is the incredible true story of Québec New York 2001.

Fantastic video! Your research and in depth approach to lost story lines is always appreciated. My girlfriend and I visited the world financial center in 2023. It’s been rebuilt as a beautiful shopping and public space. Perfect venue for something like this event. We enjoyed our time there and marveled at the incredible winter garden.

Great video. For a lot of people, the Quebec New York signs were some of the last things they saw. It's like being closer to those people by reviving this story and the knowledge and effort that was in place at that moment

I just rewatched this video in commemoration of the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks, and I cannot say enough how fantastic of a job you did on this video, Brock!
You did an amazing job with the research on this exposition in describing what it was and how it had so much potential to do so much good for both the US and Canada had the events of that truly terrible day(Which you covered in a very respectful manner) not occurred. The fact that Quebec New York 2001 is rarely talked about is very surprising given how this involved multiple countries, how close to the WTC it was, and how many people who were involved in this that had stories about their survival and memories of the attacks that have yet to be heard to this day.
I also recently discovered something very interesting related to “Zulu Time”: According to editor Don Shewey(Who edited the New York Times article about the play that you mentioned near the end of the video), while attending the 2002 Montreal Jazz Festival about nine months after the attacks, he attended a showing of “Zulu Time”, which was performing for four weeks at the festival. Shewey mentioned how the performance he went to had left in the airport terrorism part as if 9/11 had not happened, which is crazy to think about.
Here’s a link to the article/blogpost on Shewey’s website describing this:
    www.donshewey.com/theater_reviews/zulu_time.html#:~:text=The%20disorienting%20nature%20of%20air,mastermind%20Robert%20Lepage%20in%20collaboration

Thank you - this was a challenging project in many ways, not the least of which being how difficult it is to find new information on the subject. And thank you for the articles. I had a hard time finding the September 16th NYT piece, which I see is also linked in the one you sent. Definitely eye opening to see what became of "Zulu Time" after the attacks.

Great video on an overlooked aspect of 9/11 Brock, a fascinating yet chilling look at how much higher the death toll on that day could have been. Given the time difference between the UK (where I'm from) and Eastern Standard Time, the first plane struck the North Tower of WTC at 1:46PM my time, meaning that like many UK school kids at the time, I was blissfully unaware of what happened until I got home from school and saw the horrifying pictures. Those images haunted my nightmares for years afterwards, and it was small wonder that reporters at the time (from the UK) said that the scale of the attacks were more like "an act of war".
The main thing I'll never forget is the sheer outpouring of support and sympathy for the United States after 9/11. Being a fellow Motorsport fan, I remember the first Formula One race after 9/11, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Many teams ran with tributes of some kind, some had an American flag painted on their car, but Ferrari's was the most moving in my view. In place of the usual Marlboro Cigarette sponsorship logos, amongst others, Ferrari removed all sponsor logos from their cars and painted the nose cones black as a mark of respect to those killed on that horrible day. The tributes continued the following race at Indy, where the Schumacher brothers had the American flag painted on to their helmets

@@LASTCARonBROCK for me though, looking back, the Motorsport that probably had the hardest weekend was CART. They were in Germany for what was originally billed as the German 500 at the Eurospeedway Lausitz. Commentator Paul Page summed it up by saying that the teams wanted to go home but couldn't at that point (due to the temporary ban on flights entering US Airspace), Taps and Amazing Grace was played before the race and if that wasn't tough enough, fan favourite Alex Zanardi had his near fatal, life changing accident where he lost his legs. Nobody was in the mood for celebrating that day, not even race winner Kenny Brack

You're very welcome. I think that's what struck me about this topic - how something can take place in plain sight, even in such a massive story as the events of 9/11 were, yet still not be widely publicized. I'd seen shots of that "quebecnewyork" banner and just thought it was another ad, like so many in New York. But that turned out to be the tip of the iceberg.

You could be a documentarian the likes of Ken Burns or Werner Herzog with your ability to engage a listener with the telling of untold/undertold stories. Im so glad you use this ability to tell the stories of a sport i love, and should use it to tell us about other stories we should know, but havent been given a voice yet. Please continue to make videos about anything you feel needs to be known

Wow... Was definitely not expecting this one at all, but at the same time, it's definitely interesting content that nobody has ever really talked about here in the States in the years since 9/11...
And honestly, outside of Pearl Harbor, 9/11/2001 will undoubtedly be a day of infamy for the United States of America, whether it was fake or not (not saying I agree with the conspiracy theories or anything, but anything is possible)
It is unfortunately a date that will be talked about ad nauseum for generations to come, just like Pearl Harbor and D-Day, but with more grim details... It's sad that I lived through this at a young age (I was 9 when this happened), and unfortunately, people at my school all the way in Missouri were affected by this... My teacher at the time was having us watch it on TV before the secretary came in and whispered something in her ear similar to President Bush in Florida, only minutes later, my teacher would end up bursting into tears... Her 19 year old son who had enlisted a year prior had been informed that he was going to be one of the first deployees of what would later be known as the War On Terror that lasted 20 years...
I am unaware of any information on him since that day, unfortunately, but I sincerely thank him for his service
