    It’s complicated.
    1. Many other South East Asian countries with large populations and most with better socio economic indicators don’t do that well. There is a dilemma for countries where one can get out of poverty into mid to upper middle income if people are putting as much energy into academics as sports.
    2. Lack of resources. Although cricket does not owe anything to other sports as they made their money on their own, I still think that each IPL team should support one sport each. Also, we should ask our billionaires like Tata, Ambani and Adani to focus on sports instead of any other form of philanthropy.
    3. Genetics is not a big issue as many think. I saw this Olympics. People of all shapes and sizes won medals at the Olympics. India just needs to focus on these athletes since an early age.
    4. China focused on diving. They saw diving had many events, and not much competition. India should identify events like that and focus crazily on that. Even with same resources, India should triple its medal count quite easily.
    5. Many expected 9-10 medals at the Olympics. If you only expect that few, it is a problem. This means only few are top contenders in their field. If you go expecting 30, then you can get +/-8. The U.S. expected more gold medals in men’s swimming, men’s relay, women’s volleyball and so on. But, they got unexpected victories in middle distance track and also track cycling. If you are expecting so few, that means your athletes are not elite and you depend on luck.
    6. Protein deficiency: It is a problem when even though we are much better off financially than countries like Pakistan, our kids have less protein. If we expect them to be champions at javelin, discus, shot put, weight lifting, higher weight category boxing, and even sports like long distance swimming, we need either to provide protein supplements for free or encourage more protein rich diet (veg or non veg). There should be blood tests which monitor for proteins for all kids and especially anyone with more potential to succeed. Already as a poor country, we are not 1.4 billion but only 400 million essentially in any contention but with the protein issues, we reduce it to 40 million. (Nevertheless, Netherlands and Australia won 33 gold medals combined with a population around 40 million combined).
    7. A lot of the Indian Olympians just qualify. They are not really medal contenders if out of 145, we are expecting 9-10 to medal.
If we want India to have 10x the medals by 2050 with at least 10 golds, we need to start working now. We cannot expect medals like Ethiopia where a lot of times only way to escape poverty is running your way out of it.

Well researched analysis. I think somewhere sports federations also need to comeout from politics. Their focus should be to identify talents and not who belongs to which community. The other sports bodies should learn from BCCI.

Population 1.5 billion and not a single gold medal.
    Just quantity and no quality.
    India needs to control population.

Pakistan's gold medal and new world record proves you need only self will power and determination to raise the game and deliver when it matters. The I.N.D.I. Mahathakbandhan has politicised sports and made Aandolanjeevi out of athletes with allot of time to do Modi Teri Kabbar khudegi Nautanki scripted by CONgress on the streets with the Leader of Opposition (LOO) Rahu.l Gandy. Rules are flouted, meritocracy compromised to contest at Olympics level especially by the Haryanvi Kushti Gang. Many could not tie 3rd place and came 4th missing the medal by a whisker.
