This 1973 Fiat 128 Sport L Coupe was first registered in the Sicilian region of Italy in July 1973, and it was imported to the US by the current owner in 2015 following their purchase of the car in Foggia, Italy, the prior year. Finished in green over tan upholstery, the car is equipped with a 1,500cc inline-four paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and features include chrome bumpers, rear pop-out windows, and 13″ steel wheels as well as a heater and defroster, an Abarth steering wheel, and front three-point seatbelts. The car received paint repairs and an engine replacement during prior ownership, while work completed under current ownership has included rebuilding the cylinder head and adjusting the clutch along with servicing the fluids, refinishing the wheels, and replacing the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, ignition components, shifter bushings, seat belt reels, interior hardware, and tires. Previously featured on BaT in November 2014, this Fiat 128 is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of owner in California with import documents, service records, manufacturer’s literature, a spare wheel set, and a clean New York title in the name of the owner’s LLC.
The car is finished in green, and the seller notes evidence of paintwork on portions of the body. The 128 Sport coupe debuted at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, and exterior features include chrome bumpers with overriders, hood vents, dual side mirrors, pop-out rear quarter windows.
Painted 13″ wheels wear Fiat center caps and Vredestein tires that were fitted in 2015. A matching spare is stored in the engine bay. The car is equipped with front disc brakes, front struts, and independent rear suspension with a transverse leaf spring.
The cabin features bucket seats and a rear bench wrapped in tan upholstery accompanied by color-keyed door panel and interior trim. Equipment includes a heater and defroster as well as three-point seat belts for the front occupants that have been serviced with replacement inertia reels. Further additions include replacement shifter bushings and rear-window hardware.
The Abarth steering wheel frames metric Veglia Borletti instrumentation consisting of a 180-km/h speedometer and a tachometer as well as temperature and fuel level gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 9k kilometers (~6k miles), around 212 of which have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.
The 1,500cc inline-four was installed under prior ownership and drives the front wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. The cylinder head assembly was rebuilt in April 2019 by Midwest-Bayless Italian Auto of Columbus, Ohio, while subsequent work included a clutch adjustment and replacement of the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, radiator hoses, and ignition components.
Manufacturer’s literature, import documentation, and service records are included in the sale.
The chassis number 128AC50129192 is displayed on the chassis tag, while the VIN listed on the New York title omits the prefix “128AC5”.

I owned the 128 saloon, from 1978 onwards for three years, and that was nippy. The notchy, rubbery g/box was its worst feature. The 128 coupe (Berlinetta 3P) usually equipped with the crossflow 1300cc engine in the UK, was a more exciting and prettier car, yet still with the characteristic lack of gear shift 'feel', typical of the early mass produced transverse (East-West) engine layouts.
This is the best part though, as there's something quite intoxicating about the sound of crossflow, short-stroke 4 cylinder Italian engine, often with Weber carburettors and matched to 4-2-0 manifolds and Abarth exhausts. The sound of that revvy little engine is beautiful, especially on a racing track !
That drivetrain and exhaust combination makes cars like this, with small engines, and torque curves yielding all the power towards the top end of the rev. range, yet producing only slightly better than average rates of acceleration, appear to be like mini-Jensens or Ferraris - which is quite an act, in fact its all a very clever illusion !

My first car was the 128SL, loved it although it was bloody useless. Had to find a hill to bump start it every time I went out in it. I’m saying all this, it is my most desired car. Relive my youth I suppose. I’ve tried hunting one down for years.

I had this exact color without the engine and exhaust upgrades. I have a 124 Spider 2000 now. The fun factor and agility of that 128 were off the charts, especially given the $500 I paid for it! And that sound. Italians made car engine noise into pure music.
