The sporran I wear most is plain leather with three tasles, which goes with our band uniform. I'm not thrilled by the magnetic closure. I also have a sealskin sporran I bought for our wedding forty-some years ago, which I wear for more formal occasions, and have a strong emotional attachment to.

I do my own leathercrafting... I made my own day-sporran in caramel brown leather with a white fur goatskin front (no tassels) and my clan crest (Scott) pin in pewter attached onto the flap. While not formal (which I hardly ever have to dress in..) it is what I go to 80-90%

Fav is my faithful chestnut leather day sporran with 3 knot tassels, hand-made and purchased in Cornwall, UK.
A sporran needs to be practical, hold just enough essentials without bulging out, soft not stiff, versatile, secure and nicely worn-in through use. Worn with a simple 5/8" plain leather belt, never, ever though cheap ghastly chains.
I love it, and polish it every so often with ordinary boot polish to enhance the lovely patina.
Dress sporran either horse-hair or red fox. Wouldn't mind a musquash if someone bought me one.
Meanwhile, I just purchased a studded targe hunting sporran on the basis of watching this and because Prince Charles wears one, now that's a man with kilt etiquette!

In the mid 1980s there was a brief fashion of small women's purses made to look like sporrans. The differences were that they had a shoulder strap and were actually big enough to hold something. So, I bought one and had the strap taken off and modified into a waist belt. VERY casual, looks good, and I can carry my wallet, keys, cigarettes and lighter in it comfortably (in the day, my checkbook, too). It isn't much larger than a standard sporran, so nobody remarks on it.

I have four bought sporrans, black Celtic patterned semi-dress, two casual brown sporrans and one traditional brown sporran. I also have a home-made brown Rob Roy style sporran I made myself that I use on my hikes, both in a kilt and with a plaid.

For now the only sporran I have is one I picked up from a Ren Faire leatherworker. It's rather rustic looking and the tassels are actually drawstrings to keep the thing closed. Not the slightest bit formal so one of these days I need to pick up something dressier, but it's been a nice companion for a while.

My favorite "day sporan" is a leather "tactical sporan" I got many years ago from Stillwater Kilts. It is no longer made but has a flap and has separated zippered pockets to stor out all my stuff.

From a standpoint of understated elegance I really appreciate the Rothesay sporran from USA Kilts. I have a formal sporran for black tie and a beater that's a modern design, but for everything in-between - the Rothesay.

My favorite sporran is a black leather sporran with a chrome and black lacquered cantle. I bought it from a vendor at the Wisconsin Games in Waukesha (I think) about 12 years ago..

I have a leather USAK hunting sporran, and my second is my Fox dress sporran, though I don’t have many occasions to wear it. The common thread is that they don’t drum.

My go to is your stag day sporran on tweed, though am looking at a nice hunting sporran in the near future. I also have a Stewart clan crest semi-dress sporran that I got years ago but with the pandemic, I haven’t been to any evening dress up engagements, other than tuxedo attire unfortunately. 🤔

My go-to and favorite sporran is one my wife gave me about 25 years ago. It's semi-dress and can pass for even more formal wear. I also have a casual black sporran, the one I usually wear (because I usually dress casual). Some of the ones in the video were COOL, but like it was mentioned, "When would I wear it?" I DO have one on my wishlist, the Book of Kells sporran that Rocky designed.

My favorite daily sporran is from Pibroch Sporrans in Scotland, the Drover to be more specific. It hangs on the belt and doesn't require a chain or strap. 100% leather, no metal, with a historic feel and casual look for modern daily Highland wear.

My favorite sporran is the full animal mask badger sporran (which I still own). Being an animal mask sporran it's appropriate for all occasions. The only drawback: it's very expensive (around $600-$700 if you can find one).

I like my hunting sporran with no fur on it as it has a clean look that transitions between different outfits and also a larger carry capacity.

I am curious as to how *many* sporrans each of you own?
Oh, and I have a novelty (but well made) sporran with the skull and crossbones done in cowhide that gets a lot of compliments, so that's my favorite (so far)

I have a black leather with (maybe synthetic) white cow hide skull and crossbones via Amazon that’s my go to, but I also only own utility kilts so it seems more fitting than a more traditional, even a basic leather day sporran, which I also have. But mine is more the punker aesthetic than the traditional highland wear look.

    • @Skunk6977
      @Skunk6977 2 года назад +1

Oh, also I own three, technically. One is what DNKE sells marketed as a utility sporran, it’s more like a work apron with a phone pocket, two pen pockets, a key clip, and I think a main zippered pocket of I recall, but I haven’t worn it in awhile so I can’t recall for sure; the skull and crossbones one and a pretty generic embossed leather day sporran that I wear with a black utility kilt and a dress shirt out to a casual dinner on occasion. Money is too tight now to buy a nicer sporran and a more traditional kilt, but I’ll be buying from these guys as soon as I can.

Favorite sporran? Black leather & black rabbit fur hunting sporran.
I’d really love to see a black on black leather & fur hunting sporran with Victorian inspired fit & fittings for a sharp vintage look today. If only there was someone who could make those kinds of sporrans *nudge nudge, wink wink* 😁

I have two sporrans, a badger fur dress sporran and a brown hunting sporran. I like both of them, but I have a problem with them: the limited capacity. I have a tall wallet and a larger cell phone, and my sporran barely holds both of them but also looks really weird because it really bulges out, and doesn't leave much room for my keys. I'm considering getting a Rob Roy sporran for when I am wearing my kilt more casually and won't have pockets in my jacket.

I missed the skunk roadkill on way to PA bagpipe competition. Beautiful fur, doesn’t stink since didn’t spray pre strike. Still working, so no chance to make a fox, opossum, raccoon, or one beaver front sporran quite yet. As a Furrier, Tanner, finder, butcher, Skinner I have enough. Save the chickens, kill the raccoons, even if it disappoints a vegan.
