Release is one of my fave songs ever. Not to get into the debate but for me personally my fave version of this is live in Holland 1992. Boston 94 and Seattle 93 are outstanding also.
The history of the song is great. Eddie spent a week with the band, when they first got together, writing and recording and jamming. During one of those sessions the music was being played and Eddie just started singing over it and this song came out. It’s about his dad so it’s super emotional for him.
    Great review. Thanks!

⭐Holland 1992⭐ Definitely the most moving for me personally. Its amazing on its own, but knowing some of the backstory (look into Eddie's relationship w/his father if u don't know) takes it to another level. I think that knowledge is required to fully appreciate the emotional importance of the song.

My favorite PJ song. Hits home for a lot of reasons. Anyone who never really connected with their father (alive or not) can relate. This is usually a show opener. Finally saw this live from the 2nd row at MSG in 2008. Worth waiting for. You should check out Immortality from Vitalogy and In My tree from No Code.

I find this version great. Shows the maturity in his voice. Still hitting all the notes. It's almost always the opening song. It is a crowd and band warm up.
For me the debate is dumb. Ed is 52 here, not 25. He has maintained a voice of 3 hour rock concerts for 30 years amazingly well. Me being a 48 year old man now, I grew with them and I love how well they have grown with me.

Nice review... people need to relax on 90's Ed vs. Ed today. Obviously with his singing style, smoking, drinking wine - yeah, you're going to lose higher pitches and whatnot over 30 years lol.. what's impressive is the way he was able to adapt and truly understand his maturing voice -- he knows how to sing the songs with higher notes with his raspy baritone, and same with the lows and everything in between. Plus they seem to write music that fit his style. Their live shows are still pretty energetic (of course not going to be as energetic as a bunch of mid-20 year olds) but still 3 hour shows that never leave you upset... solid review 🤙

Love this song. PJ opens with this song a lot, and then go right into one of their harder songs. Don’t know if it’s the case here. This is also the last track of their 1st Album, so they have been performing this song for 30 years and Eddie can still hit those sustained notes. You could review this song multiple times through the decades and do comparison, but it’s really just a great lay back and chill but uplifting song.

they have traditionally more often than not opened with ballads. this has been a signature opener for them from their inception. they have opened with rockers plenty of times as they change their setlist every show and Eddie often does it by his own feel, getting a vibe of the room/venue before hand etc, but they have always been a springsteen style of band of playing 2 1/2 to 3 hour shows so they would come out with this sorta ease in playing a ballad before immediately jumping into a whole row of ass kicking rockers. from a musical stand point it makes a bunch of sense. the band and crowd get a sorta palette cleanser settle in tune before stuff rips off, it's something if the mix needs to be adjusted at the start of the show, easy type of tune for FOH to make some tweaks on. But as time went on with how engaged the audience is with them as you are hearing in this, it immediately involves the crowd. That being said, it's obviously not something most bands have or would do.

PJ concerts are great in that the energy ebbs and flows. A majority of the PJ fans out there are no longer spring chickens and can't keep the high level they once did. When they make set lists, they match songs up so well to avoid burning out their crowd. This song is often played after a big head banger like even flow...and the build up at the end gets everyone ready for another had banger afterwards.

The song is about his deceased father. At this show, a fan waited 3 or 4 days to be the first in GA and he spoke about how this song helped with the loss of his own father. Eddie gave him a shoutout and included the fan’s name in the song. I saw them at Fenway two years later and both shows were phenomenal. As for the building of the songs, he’s a surfer and has said that he often sees songs/music as waves.

Another great review. Eddie is a great and talented vocalist but once you learn the lyrics it's far more impressive. His lyrics and the way they're presented is an absolute thing of beauty. It makes a song like this that sounds great on it's own and turns it into something magical once you understand the meaning along with presentation. And he and the band just have an undeniable chemistry that brings it all together.

Thanks for this review. I too think the debate between 90s Eddie and modern Eddie are kind of silly. I'm blown away by him in every era, sometimes for different reasons.
So, I think that at this point your degree of appreciation for PJ has largely reached it's max. What I mean by that is you have clearly seen their technical ability. You dig Vedder's vocals. You've seen the variety of different sounds they produce. You've felt like songs like Go, Whoever Said, Quick Escape, and Corduroy are more your cup of tea. I think there are other songs in PJ's catalogue that are of that style that you will similarly enjoy. Other songs like Release you appreciated, but were not really your thing.
If you were to play me Pavarotti's best performance I might be blown away by the talent, recognize it as a masterpiece, but still not want to play it over and over because it just isn't my thing.
I think PJ has more masterpieces than your tough grading acknowledge. But I think it's silly for people to argue over whether someone else should personally enjoy the music more.
To me PJ songs connect with me on an emotional visceral level and sometimes even when I'm not listening to it, I am replaying their music in my head. For me this is true of PJ more than of any other music. In that way, aside from my own inner voice, Eddie's voice occupies a space in my mind more than perhaps any other individual I don't personally know.
Thanks again for the great and honest review.

The quality of Pearl Jam's performances haven't changed, in my opinion, it's simply the tone of them.
I saw them when they came to London 2 years ago (Eddie actually lost his voice after the show, having warned us that it could happen at any time while they were playing) and I think, as time has gone on, they see the crowd as their friends rather than simply an audience to be entertained. I also think the crowd's view of the band has taken on the same transformation.

Obviously David, I'm having a fit of insomnia which is why you're getting the added reactions. The '92 version broke my heart initially. The most heartwarming (imo) comes from the movie "Let's Play Two" when a fan sits outside Wrigley Field for four days in advance just to hear this song because he's lost his father. Eddie acknowledges him as the show opens. You could be a cynic and say it was done for the film but I've seen the band do similar things with no movie cameras on them. This song is beyond words in my book. "Let's Play Two" is a blast btw... not a straight concert film, just fun.

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  3 года назад +1

I'm not THAT much of a cynic....we've done similar things with our shows. We've even had people come up on stage with us for "special occasions" like that....give the fan a chance to shine and brighten their world. Anything we can do to help, we do as long as it's within our power. Even a simple acknowledgement to a fan in the crowd can change their life forever.

Watching this again..my dad and father in law, who I've known for over 20 years, passed away last year..this song I have loved for decades takes on even more meaning. Goosebumps head to toes as usual and tears ready to form. Ed just takes you to a place that you need to go right when you need it..doesn't matter 27 year old Ed or 50s Ed.

Fyi the song is about his father who used to be a singer. Eddie never knew his real father was his father until after he died when ed was 13. That's what the song alive is about. His mom lied and said his step dad was his real dad and his real dad was just a family friend. After his real dad died his mom told him the truth. If you really want to be blown away, it would be great to see you do alive, once and footsteps all at once. It's a trilogy explaining what he thought would happen to him as an adult because his mom messed him up so bad.

I hear the guitars and I KNOW a Gossard/McCreedy rift, I KNOW an Ament bass rift when I hear it and of course once Eddie releases his first note you KNOW it IS A PJ song... WHY a debate? Please read the lyrics, and relisten again, right from the beginning. Eddie has spent his whole life mourning the biological Father he never knew he had, after having been abused by his stepfather. When he sings "Release Me," he is crying out to his Dad and the universe to release him from this unbearable and lifelong agony. When he says, "I'm somehow like you", he knows he has his Dad within him, and he hopes that his Dad can see him, wherever he is. He wants to know he's like his Dad, and he needs to be seen by him, somehow. He's desperate for a connection with his Father. Put yourself in his shoes, and relisten. Listen while imagining if you had a parent that you had never known. I guarantee it will reach a part of you that will bring you tears. Loss resonates deeply with all of us. But nobody expresses it like Eddie does.

If you wanna start from a chronological approach, I would start with "Fatal Portrait", or go back to his original band Mercyful Fate and reeeeeally start at the beginning with "Melissa" . If you wanna start off with his best stuff, I would recommend "Abigail". Hope that helps, I really wish I could do reaction to any of his songs...but it wouldn't be an honest reaction unfortunately, I know all his songs by heart.
