- The Shocking Power of Stinging Nettle
For the past few years a plant has been taking over behind our house. At first look, stinging nettle may appear to be just another weed, but the amazing benefits of stinging nettle have been shown for centuries, and in this video, we talk about why stinging nettle is such a valuable edible weed.
Many people don't like stinging nettle because of the pain it can cause if you brush up against the plant, due to the trichomes and the chemicals inside them that causes burning; however, once you understand that cooking stinging nettle or dehydrating stinging nettle removes that problem, then you can start to look closer at the stinging nettle benefits.
In this video, we make stinging nettle tea to determine what does stinging nettle tea smell like, and what does stinging nettle tea taste like, and we talk about the plant in depth and address some of the benefits of nettles.
This plant is used by many different cultures, and there are many stinging nettle recipes out there, and we would love to hear your favorite way to use stinging nettle.
I think this could be one of the healthiest edible weeds out there!

I found some stinging mettle growing in the alley last year and harvested the seeds to spread in a corner of my yard. By harvesting only the tips I get multiple harvests from the same plant. I like to add them as cooked greens to any meal. If there is enough I freeze the leftovers. I also like to chop them real fine and mix with egg, onion, and flour and then fry that in a pan.
The young tender leaves are great as a cooked green, as good as any greens in your garden. My suggestion would be to cut that whole patch down to the ground now, then harvest the next flush of new growth, up to 6-8 inches high. Blanch them for a 2 minutes and freeze them, just like you would Swiss Chard or spinach. Then let the patch grow awhile. Then cut in down again in late summer, to get another flush of greens in the early autumn. You can get a lot of food from a stinging nettle patch.
Stinging Nettle is my FAVORITE tea!
I love the mild flavor and it really does make you feel like you are getting a nice boost.
I really appreciate your descriptions of taste, feel, smell.....Very nice of you to share what the experience is like. :)
Very interesting…I’ve never encountered stinging nettle!
I boil the leaves and then blend them in a blender an then i make mukimo with it. Mukimo is mashed potatoes mixed with beans or peas and corn then you can put the blended stinging nettle to make a mash.
You fond a little patch of heaven😊😊 I oticed a hugge patch off the road last week, should go and check who owns that meadow!
Oh, your skimpy gloves do nothing for me😂 I wear the housecleaning rubber kind that goes half to the elbow! The pain repeats everytime I get my hands wet for 2 days, but even that is supposedly healthy.... just cut my own and have 2 trays in the dehydrator, the tough stems and not so nice leaves go in the compost.
I have mine raw in a fruit smoothie, love the taste!
I've used this in stews or vegetable soup. Have also made stinging nettle juice (with honey), I dry it out, crush it to a powder form then sparingly put it on things like ice cream, toast, and hard-boiled eggs. I've put it in spaghetti sauce (I make my own sauces), alfredo sauce, I add them into my lentil patties, and of course the tea!! (Edit; I forgot to add that I always wash them and boil them, then place them in a cold water bath for a few minutes before using, unless making a powder, then they air dry for a few days until crisp - End edit).
You can make string, rope and even clothing from them.
I need to get myself a bunch of seeds and grow it. Isn't Acetylcholine something that can kill you?
I read that stingers are a good source of anti inflammatory so I wiped my arthritic knees with some back and front, it didn't actually do any good but was a good reminder of how painfully funny they can be oowch 🤣
Can't be as bad as bad as Kratom tea. 🤢
