  • Netflix is developing Narnia series and feature films.
It was only natural for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" to be the first Narnia movie (2005). The first book to be published and remains the most well-known of the Chronicles. But now that Netflix has the rights to all seven books, how should they proceed?

NETFLIX TO DEVELOP SERIES AND FILMS BASED ON
C.S. LEWIS’ BELOVED THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA
Hollywood, Calif. - October 3, 2018 -- Netflix will develop new series and film projects based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series. Under the terms of a multi-year deal between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company, Netflix will develop classic stories from across the Narnia universe into series and films for its members worldwide. All series and films produced through the deal will be Netflix productions, with Mark Gordon of Entertainment One (eOne) alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber serving as executive producers for series and as producers for features. In total the Narnia books have sold more than 100 million copies and been translated in more than 47 languages worldwide. The deal marks the first time that rights to the entire seven books of the Narnia universe have been held by the same company.
“C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”
“It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”
“Narnia is one of those rare properties that spans multiple generations and geographies,” said Mark Gordon, eOne’s President and Chief Content Officer, Film & Television. “eOne and I are excited to be collaborating with The C.S. Lewis Company and Netflix who have the capacity to translate the Narnia universe into both stellar feature-length and episodic programming. We cannot wait to get started on the multiple productions we hope to undertake.”

The problem with an entire reboot is that Disney's first two Narnias were excellent adaptations imo (the first was basically perfect). It's hard to simply ignore something that was already great to begin with.

In todays political climate, Netflix would be raked across the coals. I can see a lot of Lewis' themes been removed or ignored to be honest.

That's why an indie, Christian studio or some RUclipsrs should do it. They don't have to worry about any backlash. I'm sure you could find plenty of Christian Arabs who would play the Calormenes. That or a better animated version should be done. Either way, a series would be best, allowing for around 4 to 6 hours for each book, keeping the entire original story.
If someone does a reboot, then they should really start with the Magician's Nephew. One, if it's not received well, then those who enjoyed it don't have to worry about not seeing the kids again, since they don't appear as children again. Two, if it is received well, then it's easier to cast people for The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe who will be willing to make multiple books, and if there's a production gap between Nephew and Lion, then it won't affect the reappearance of the Witch.
An animated version would be smartest, because you don't have to worry about production gaps and the kids aging.

If anyone at Netflix possessed a shred of common sense, they would humbly admit to themselves that in a post-Andrew Adamson Narnia fan climate, the true challenge is getting those same people who already own the first 3 movies to give their series a chance. To some audiences, Andrew Adamson's telling of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe will *always* be the definitive version of that story, and whatever they do, they will *NOT* be able win those same viewers over by starting their series with yet another reboot of that movie. To other viewers out there who embraced Andrew's vision, this could even apply to Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and Netflix would be wise to at least acknowledge that to themselves. Even from a business standpoint, it makes complete sense now to start with The Magician's Nephew, because it would be a win-win scenario as far as getting as large an audience as possible to watch it. If Netflix does not at least consider appeasing fans of Andrew Adamson's Narnia movies, they run the risk of having a smaller audience, and thus losing more money.

Christopher Russell The first time I ever heard of Narnia was seeing it in the theaters when I was 8, and it wasnt until a few years later that I even knew it was based off a book, and only read the books at 21, so yes the Adamson version of Narnia is my defenitive version. Infact when I decided to read TCON I was exited to start with TMN because I've already seen it told through publication order (the first 3 anyway) now I can read it in chronolgical order. Unfortunately, I find the books a bit dull, especially if it doesn't involve the Pevencies.
My question us how are they going to handle the ages of the actors? It won't matter for TMN, (most of) LWW, PC, VDT, & SC because those happen chronologically (and MN take place in the past with completely different characters minus Jadis & Digory), but its going to be really hard for the end of LWW HHB and espicially LB. LWW could just hirer older actors for a scene like the did in 2005 (though from what I can see one of the things critized about that movie is that Aslan just gives them their titles whereas in the book they earned them. I wonder how their going to show that?) and if they do it in chrological order then they can use the same actors for HHB. The problem will rear its head in LB. The Last Battle is a special book, not because its the last book, not because Narnia's been destroyed, not because… Susan. No, The Last Battle is a special book because no matter what order, chronological or publication, it will always be 7. Edmund was 19 in LB (I'm using Edmund because he was born in 1930 so his age is the easiest to math), and I don't know how long it will take for each book to be made, it took 2.5 year between each film and if HHB is shot inbetween LWW & PC than it be even harder to convenve us only one year has passed.

I disagree. A prequel is called a prequel for a reason and is meant to be saved for later. That’s what makes the Magicians Nephew so special, is the origin story. If you just start with the Nephew as the first movie, it’s no longer a prequel and it loses its mythic power. Without having the knowledge of the Lion, going into the Nephew just feels lost.

I would like to see a TV-serie with 1 season and 15 episodes that start with the magicians nephew and end with ending of The Lion. I think this story is probably the best. Season two I would go with the Silver Chair and end with the Last Battle.
I wish they would not rely so much on music and 3d-effects to capture interest, like last movies did, but rather focus on dialogue and on the characters. I feel like something in the books got lost in last films. Lewis character where not so much cute but rather grim or more serious. I do wish they would remove the elements of trying to be fun, and not take the book serious.

  • @GremlinBones
    @GremlinBones 5 лет назад +8

Just thought of this while watching....knowing that the rights are for TV and film, the only way to make it make sense (to me) is to have Horse and His Boy as a film since it is the only book in the series that is kind of separate from the rest of the whole story. I wouldn't mind if Netflix goes a little more serious but I think it could work, similar to how Unfortunate Events works (even though that is supposed to be more dark than whimsical). So doing Narnia like that but in like a reverse format, meaning being lighter but also not shying away from the darker aspects (such as the White Witch's meeting with her followers and the type of creatures that follow her, as an example). I've seen the BBC versions, and I personally love the Walden Media versions (including some of the dumb changes, like the Caspian/Susan relationship). I think those films held a lot of the childlike magic and wonder that I imagine Narnia to be. So I would love a feeling like that. I definitely want more of a TV series format overall. It's a series that has so many details and character development, and even some callback/cameo type aspects that would be really cool to see. As I mentioned in the beginning, the only one that makes sense as a movie would be Horse and His Boy because it doesn't really add to the overall plot of the series. Granted, it has been a good, long while since I have read the series at all so my memory may be a little wonky on that part. But with that in mind, they could skip the Horse and His Boy as a season of the series and "sell" it as more of "spinoff" film, of sorts, if that makes sense. I think I would be okay with that. I think that while a lot of fans might disagree with that, I truly think that would be the best way to do it. Otherwise, I think if Horse and His Boy is made as it's own season, too many new viewers would be confused by the sudden change in how the story is playing out. The rest of the series needs to go in chronological order, from a purely linear storytelling sense. Obviously, Season 1 would be have to be Magician's Nephew. I can pretty clearly picture the trailer in my head showing those glimpses of things we already know from Lion, Witch, Wardrobe, such as Aslan, Queen Jadis, and the Wardrobe so newer audiences can grab onto something they recognize from the Disney/Walden Media films, while also showing new things. In this way, Netflix can get new and old fans on board fairly easily. But until we get a cast or trailer it's all just ideas and hopes. I have faith in Netflix. Their numbers are important to them. They've experimented with a little bit of everything by this point so I know they are capable. I've never imagined Narnia as grandiose as Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones so as long as Netflix doesn't try too hard to copy those, I think everything will be as good as it could be. Unless the acting or CGI is as bad as Watership Down or something. lol

  • @PaceFilmsProductions

I actually wouldn't want to start with the battle of charn because part of the tension of when they first meet Jadis is them not knowing who they're dealing with at first. Like maybe if you could do it in a way that doesn't reveal who said the deplorable word maybe that could work but I'm personally more of the opinion that the story is best to ease into from the sad little boy with the dying mother making friends with the neighbor girl and the story slowly gets more fantastical as it goes along.

Give each book two episodes each, but unlike ASOUE don’t cram The Last Battle into one, like The End (book 13) was. I also wouldn’t mind if they changed the whole let’s hang out with Bacchus the Wine god, I’m mean what the krap. If they cut that out and keep everything else the same pretty much from the books and add stuff without not taking away anything else or changing thing, it should be excellent!

UGH this is so stupid! you guys didn't like Walden's Prince Caspian (which is a masterpiece) but you are now fighting for Netflix to do Narnia? Narnia shouldn't be episodic. Look at what happened to The Hobbit when it got stretched out too long. that was AWFUL!!! Narnia will get the same treatment, mark my words. Netflix is only in it for the cash-grab-franchise part of this. They don't care about Narnia. They just want another fantasy now that HBO doesn't have GoT. UGH don't you see it? this will end badly and will be terrible.

I think an episodic Horse and His Boy or a miniseries of it would be absolutely epic. You'd have to expand on a few things and drag it out a bit more than needed however, I don't think you could do the HAHB properly without making it episodic. Some of the other books should definitely not be episodic, but Netflix has a pretty good track record when it comes to medieval and historically set series so I'm hopeful.

Personally I don't think that this is a cash grab. I mean yes, in Hollywood everything is about making money but I think everyone who wants Netflix already has it; Narnia (unfortunately) doesn't seem big enough to really attract a brand new audience.

So where is the narnia series? It’s too Christian for Netflix I guess?

John Rhys-Davies would make an excellent voice for Bree in The Horse and His Boy!

Also loved A Series of Unfortunate Events (on Netflix) I love that they gave the author (Daniel Handler) full creative control and like any great adaptation, it actually added to the escapism of the world (brought to life through books).
I hope that they do this same treatment with Narnia! (and the Last Airbender series, which also has the original creators attached)

Firstly. The chronological order IS the order. There is no other order.
Secondly, The BBC got "His Dark Materials" just right. That's the sort of level of grittiness and darkness that should be used.

Millie age 19, Finn is 20, Joe is 31, and Natalia is 28 are all too old. The characters Susan 12 and Peter 13 are older than Lucy 8 and Edmund 10. Hopefully, Netflix's Chronicles of Narnia will be more Harry Potter than Game of Thrones when it comes to casting and target audience. Religious mythology should also be diluted if they want high viewer ratings.
