  • It happened that two people whom I admire enormously featured in contiguous slots in the BBC4 series "The NHS. a people's history". I've made sure this clip from the programme lives on,
The first hero is Dr Elphis Christopher. She was a pioneer of contraception and sex education, and in the 1970s she got death threats because of her enlightened views. (Yes, that happened before twitter.) The title picture on the video shows Elphis's priceless expression during a debate with the appalling 1970s "morality campaigner", Mary Whitehouse, We have known Elphis for a long time because she's married to my good friend, Donald Jenkinson, who was in the Department of Pharmacology at UCL when I joined it in 1964. The history is at en.wikipedia.o...
The second hero is neurosurgeon, Alan Crockard. He's the surgeon who pinned the aneurysm that caused my wife, Margaret, to collapse on the platform of the railway station at Walton-on Thames. That was on December 13th 1984, She was 6 months pregnant at the time. Both she, and our son Andrew, owe their lives to him. I was able to stay at the Jenkinson-Christopher's house at the peak of the crisis, and have never forgotten their kindness. The history is at www.dcscience.n... and there is an album of pictures at www.dcscience.n....
