  • Science isn’t just a dispassionate search for truth. It also provides lessons for living our daily lives in the face of uncertainty and the need for commitment.
Dr Douglas Vakoch is president of METI International, a San Francisco-based scientific organisation that transmits powerful, intentional radio signals to nearby stars, in the hope of eliciting a reply from extraterrestrial civilisations. As an elected member of the International Astronomical Union and the International Institute for Space Law, he explores the scientific and societal dimensions of the search for life beyond Earth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

''To be human, is to live with uncertainty, if we demand guarantees that we can discover life beyond earth before we actually reach out and search for it then we're guaranteed to fail but if we are willing to put in the hard work to embark on a search not knowing whether we will succeed or not then we are guaranteed to find at least one civilisation that has the passion and the dedication to understand its place in the universe and that civilisation is us, uncertainty and all. I had the SETI @ home on 3 computers. Just for fun. But, I often wondered about the frequencies SETI monitored and how much any civilization would use them. On Earth, we don’t use them, that’s why they are so quiet. How many times have we transmitted signals in the direction of likely stars or star clusters? Not many from what I heard. So, why would Johnny Alien think, “Hey, I’m going to dedicate one of my brains and 3 arms to sending signals on a frequency that other creatures probably don’t use”.
