Beautiful Wintry Morning but Boring Location... A Challenging Search for Compositions

- After waking up to a fresh blanket of snow, I brewed a fresh pot of coffee and grabbed my GFX to head out for some winter landscape photography on part of a local trail I hadn’t yet explored. Unfortunately, the further along I trudged through the snow, the more barren and boring the landscape became. Despite beautiful conditions, I found myself struggling a bit to find interesting compositions.
In this video, I try out 65:24 and square aspect ratio as well as black and white compositions on some more subtly interesting subjects. These images are fairly different from my usual style, so it was a great experience to get out and push my creativity.
How do you typically handle shooting in less than interesting locations? Share your thoughts in the comments!
Happy trails,
Brian

There is something special about being out on a snowy winter day. The calmness and purity that often resides. You've captured it quite nicely here. The crunchy snow underfoot and subtle environmental sounds were a bonus.
Thanks Mark! I completely agree about the feeling of complete silence, slight wind, and crunching snow. Nothing better! Glad you enjoyed it.
The slush is awesome to photo because you know its only going to be there for a short time until it fully freezes. Also love the intro! Its like natire asmr !
That’s what I thought exactly! And thanks, glad you liked it
Great video as always, Brian. The first photo was my favorite but great work on all of them! I'm cold just watching you in this one, lol.
Thanks Jared! Yeah man, it was an icy morning for sure. Looking forward to more regular winter temps
Brian! This is a great video. Well done on those images too. That final piece of the cottonwood trees in 1:1 is very cool. After I watched this I checked your channel and it looks like you have a couple new videos I haven't seen yet so I'm excited to watch those. Also a little annoyed I missed them (thanks RUclips).
Thanks Heath! I like how that final image turned out as well. Wasn’t so sure standing there though, but that was probably more the cold getting to me than anything.
Winter is my favorite season for photography. It's hard being out in the bitter cold but the images that result are incredible. Thanks for another great vid!
haha man - you could not be in a better state than AK then! I agree, something about the sunrise/sunset light in the winter, especially with snow, that just looks incredible.
@@brianbeattyphotography Agreed! We get some interesting light in the winter because even midday it's really low angle. Winter is a great season to visit for a photographer. No crowds, a lot of great deals, aurora, and killer light. Just sayin' ;)
Love the skeletal forms of the branches with the soft snow. Awesome photos!
Thanks! Glad you liked them 👍
Really like that square frame at the end. The play of snow covered dead tree vs black live tree is great. I feel the 3:2 frame kept the live cottonwood on the left 1/3 line (boring) and the square created a nice weighted asymmetrical comp which looks great. Nice work on this!
Thanks bud! Yeah that's what I was thinking, but you've articulated much better. Definitely looking to better talk through the thought process in real time. I like how the square emphasizes a feeling of emptiness where the dead tree is on the right. If there were a bunch of clouds / definition in the sky it may not have worked
Hasn't got that cold here yet, but I'm waiting! Excellent video my friend.
thank you! hopefully you don't get down into the single digits like we did the past few days. I like winter, but man when it's that cold getting out of the house to do anything is rough!
Loved the opening scene of hte barn. That could have also been a great photo. Thanks for sharing and getting out in that weather.
Thanks Richard! My wife said the same thing about the barn. Might just have to take a still frame of that series and save it as an image.
Love the black and white image but they’re all very nicely done.
Thanks! Glad you liked that one as well 👍
Nice work Brian, love the wide aspect ratios for those winter shots, and the crunchy snow underfoot 👍👍👍👍
thanks Ian! hard to beat being the first footsteps in the snow
12 degrees 🥶 that’s cold! Brian, that last image is absolutely stunning! Well balanced and the light is perfect! Thank for sharing, buddy!
Thanks Michael! It was a pretty rough go after the first 20-30 minutes, but I enjoyed the challenge 👍. Glad you liked the final one!
@@brianbeattyphotography I liked the panos too, but that last one … wow! 🤩
Enjoyed that Brian. Loved the silence or the sounds of nature or just the sound of you walking along and getting set up. We tend to talk too much in our vlogs or feel that we have to get appropriate music to match the mood but here your lack of music and slience for the first few minutes was soothing and relaxing. The last photo was the most interesting and a tight crop of the first photo would make a really interesting abstract. You had it when adjusting the manual focusing. Take care, Fergus.
Thanks Fergus! Glad you enjoyed that approach to the audio. I used to be in the camp of playing music, talking a ton, quick movements and sounds, and even briefly used the same way-overplayed audio tracks that so many others use. Something about the last few months though, I’ve really embraced the silence and natural sounds and much prefer them.
I love these kind of shots, I just took some myself over Thanksgiving weekend!
Thanks Charles! It’s a little more challenging but still fun. Glad you got out this weekend. Looking forward to the vid!
Nice one Brian...that final image was top drawer too 👍👍 - cheers! T🙂
Thanks Tony! I think that one turned out well
Great video with insights on the photos. Cheers from Norway 👍❄️
Thank you! Just checked out yours as well - beautiful!
@@brianbeattyphotography Thanks and thanks for the sub. 😀👍
Thanks for the video. Were you on a bike path? We don't get a lot of snow in this part of Ohio. We don't have a whole lot, geographically speaking to photograph here. I know, head to the local parks and I do that but there are just not that many interesting landscapes. Again enjoyed the content, stay warm.
Thank Ken! It's a mixed use cinder path that winds through some county parks. It's a pretty remote area though, and not really much to see even though the rockies are just a few miles west. With the snow though, it looks like it could've been in OH! I used to live in Western PA, so I get the feeling of not having a ton of interest around. Still some good stuff to see though if you're observant (and persistent!)
What a fun time out! Was that trail directly through the farm? Or did you just trespass a little bit. ;)
Haha! Yea the trail snakes through the farmland. Thankfully using a 100-400 doesn’t count as trespassing yet 👍😎
Nicely made video. I am residing in SE Wyoming where I call our state tree a telephone pole. The winds are strong and the temps cold at times. I am trying my best to keep motivated and inspired to get out with my camera. I do have a question. You seem not to be using your lens hood but rather a filter on your lens. Just a UV filter? I am going back and forth to use a filter or not or just use the lens hood. Your video and images are a inspiration, thanks for sharing.
Hi Chester - thank you! There's certainly parts of CO here a little bit further south of you where the land gets pretty flat and uninteresting very quickly too. I generally don't use lens hoods at all unless it's really raining hard to keep the rain off the front (mostly to avoid having to wipe it down constantly). All of my lenses have a UV filter on the front to protect them from nicks and dirt. Despite constantly trying to keep everything clean, there will always end up being something that gets in there.
Thanks Brian. I had UV filters on all of my lenses. I have removed them for the time being to see if there is any change with or with out the filters. I used the filters for the same reason you do. The lens hoods I do use unless the winds are blowing strong which at this time of the year they do.@@brianbeattyphotography
