There's a new company that makes Mesh drumheads with acoustic material in the center. Literally 50/50 mesh and mylar. Check it out here:

A tip for making mesh heads louder is to put tape on the underside, which is out of the way but it covers some holes to give more resonance.

Great video! I actually like loud mesh heads as well. I have a Yamaha acoustic kit converted with Drum-Tec Design heads, Roland triggers, and a set of L80's. It's a perfect setup for me. I left the batter heads on all of the drums and tuned them up to get a bit of tone out of the drums.

I don't recomend this route for most drummers, but hey if you were looking for the loudest mesh heads here they are :)

What would you recommend to maximize tone out of a mesh head? This video is about volume in particular but I'm just trying to maintain as much tone and feel as possible. I need to turn down my volume a lil but not a ton, any mesh head will be quiet enough. I'm hoping to preserve as much tone and feel as possible so I'm actually motivated to use the practice kit, instead of resenting playing it (which is currently my struggle with those rubber practice pads).

Great video! I actually had this exact issue awhile back. I have a set of Sabian Quiet Tone cymbals, and the silent stroke heads were just too quiet to be useful. They just got drowned out by the cymbals. After watching your comparison video, which you referenced in this one, I decided to try the Goedrum heads. I left the acoustic resonant heads on, and tuned the mesh heads to pitch (or as close as the mesh heads can be to pitch), and the volume balance with the cymbals is really close. With the regular bottom heads on, they actually sound pretty good. Kind of like a normal head with some muffling, only quiet enough to be neighbor friendly. The Goedrum head even moves enough air to get a decent response from the snare chains, so my snare sounds right.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents! Thanks for all the great videos!

Hi Justin, I just purchased an alesis dm10 mkii studio kit. It is my first electronic kit. I've been a drummer since I was 8 years old back in 58. I am very impressed with this new kit. I also took your recommendation about spreading it out as to be more like my acoustic kit. The mesh heads replicate the acoustic heads perfectly. I did splurge and instead of using my acoustic kick pedal I spent about two hundred bucks on a top of the line Tama pedal and another hundred and sixty on a Tama throne. But I figured that at my age what the heck. Love your channel and keep your paradiddles crisp.

Hi Justin, I think there are more drummers around then you would think, that are looking for exactly that: a solution between a normal head and a mesh head ! I have been looking for it since years, and ran into several other people who are looking for it as well. So my question is: when you are in contact with manufacturers, and the topic of mesh heads comes up, would you consider putting in a good word for our cause ??? Greetings from a desperate drum teacher! PS I love your videos, great work, always thorough and informative!! Marc

nice video. Drum Tec Real Feel are good for Snare Drums as they make a little "rattling" sound similar to a accoustic snare

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  5 лет назад

Real Feel from Drumtec is definitely the best I agree, not too loud and realistic bounce. Plus that rattle sound you mentioned is a nice touch for realism :)

Thanks so much for the in-depth reviews you provide! I'm looking into the Drum-tec Pro Black series. I currently use an acoustic drumhead but fill the drum with insulation to deaden the entire drum. In your opinion, are the Drum-tec heads softer than that? Also is there a link that you can provide so that Drum-tec know that I bought their products because of you?

A good tip is to add some gaffa tape on the border of the meshhead ... The more you add , the louder it goes ... Same thing happens with the L80s ... If you add just 2X2 inches of tape close to the bell , the bell will sound fuller ... Just have a try , inexpensive trick and 100% reversible

I tried the mesh head L80 thing. Electronic kit is so much funner. And the mesh heads and L80s didnt replicate an acoustic set anyway. Felt way different to me.

Hi Justin, so I'm looking to be the L80+Mesh kit drummer for a practice kit at home and I've been trying to figure out which mesh heads would best match the L80's. I plan on doing a normal single ply reso head on the shells to retain some tone (maybe even putting some overtone rings or tape to help move even more air) as well as bring the volume up to match the L80's. So I've been trying to decide between the Drum-Tec Pro, Real Feels, and the GoEDrum mesh heads. Seems like the Pro might be louder than the L80's if I do the mylar reso head as well?
While looking at the GoEDrum mesh heads, it seems they're not longer a heavy 1 ply, but either a 3 ply or 2 ply with an adhesive between them. Any input on those?

The Thicker the mesh head, the tighter they need to be tuned. Or you get false triggering.

Thats not a bad question (black or white) ! ...if you play vintage drums or beautiful other drums, i love white one becouse it should look nice (like you not like the big brand logos) ...so its not bad to quest that! If i would sell mashheads i would only produce white one! ...it looks better on acoustic drums, realy better ;) ...and that is also important

I was mistakenly send a Hart Magnum (1 THICK PLY) drum head and rather than send it back, they said to keep it and they sent me the correct head I purchased Here's what I found out; it is way loud AND it gives off a "tone" that is literally annoying to me; it does not sound like a Roland 2 ply head. I don't know how to describe it, but when I try hitting that Hart drum head, it just sounds wrong. I've decided to do a DIY drum and use that head on the resonant side because I wouldn't want anyone to heard the acoustic sound of that drum .

out of curiousity do you have heads of all the same size so you can swap them to other shells? Im just wondering if the differences in the drums themselves are having any effect on the volume.

Heyy Justin i really need your help with this one because i really don't know where to search this. I have a yamaha dtx522k and it's been about a year since i have bought it. I play it every day and now the crash cymbal, when i hit it, it hardly plays a normal crash sound and it plays a weak ride sound. I actually have to hit the back part of the crash to sometimes obtain the crash sound. I think its a problem with the trigger but don't know where to look for help.

    • @65Drums

      Could be a few things:
      1. the cord is loose on the cymbal or module
      2. The cymbal is broken
      3. The settings in the module need to be fixed. Try lowering the threshold settings, raising the sensitivity (gain), or just factory reset the module and see if that fixes it.

Hi Justin, I'm confused about the dBA readings...they looked like they were on average between 800 and 1000. But that makes no sense... is there possibly a decibel point that we couldn't see due to the camera angle?

Great video, I was hoping to see something else than the drumtec pro because the 14" is out of stock for a while :( I'm also looking for "high" volume mesh heads since I use Agean cymbals which are way more louder than L80, I have a drumtec realfeel for snare and a thick "pro" for 12" tom which is indeed lot louder and have more attack than silentstrokes ! A small video clip here if you want : ruclips.net/video/oulhO3OnenU/видео.html
