- In this episode of "What Is On My Wrist" Cam "Unboxes" and reviews the Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver reissue, Cam compares new to old and does a deep dive into the new Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster.
The Chronomaster range of watches from Nivada Grenchen and Croton were produced in a time when adventures and exploration were at the forefront of what was happening in the world and within the pop culture of the 1960s. Within the expansive world of vintage timepieces, there is no uncertainty that vintage tool watches hold a particular position within the minds of numerous collectors. The 1960s and 1970s were what we now know as the golden era of sports watch design where the form of a watch needed to meet its intended function to support the adventures that the watch was created for.

They make beautiful vintage watches. Love how they keep them mostly identical as they were in 1950 and 1960. Great review. 😊

Great review. I’ve been eyeing this piece for a few weeks and have been trying to come up with a reason not to pull the trigger but I think I’m not gonna win the argument. Again. Hats off to NG for doing a reissue right.

I have the 86011WM and love it! I bought the tropic rubber strap but it is back-ordered so the watch came with a basic black leather that I swapped out for a "favorite" that I use which is somewhat softer & more flexible. I also am the original owner of a first-issue 1961-62 Croton Nivada Grenchen *CHRONOGRAPH* Aviator Sea Diver with the Venus 210 movement, still running well (NOTE: The first release of this watch type in 1961 was "Chronograph" and the change to "Chronomaster" came in about 1963 or so). It is amazing to me that an original $100 watch can bring the kinds of prices from collectors that I have seen lately (the Valjoux 23 movement versions seem to be the biggest sellers).

@@craftandtailored Received mine today! And have put it on a mesh bracelet. I think this might be the watch that spends the most time on my wrist. Hodinkee also ships in the same packaging as what you received, along with a signed and numbered copy of Chronomaster Only.

I ordered the panda dial manual watch. The only disadvantage is Hodinkee only has 3 watches (styles)

This watch was made as a "do everything" watch in the truest sense, that was the goal. It packs 7-9 functions, apparently. I'll do my best to get them right: Regatta timer, second time zone, chronograph, dive timer, tachymeter for speed, tachymeter for heart rate (I think there's a way to do that with some simple math?), and finally, the local time itself.

It's bidirectional. No clicks. But locks or holds nicely.
Do you still like/wear this watch? Is it one of those that has faded in time or gotten better for you?
