I am Black and have lived in Japan for fourteen years under various visa statuses. I am currently a PhD student and on a student visa, but in the future I would like to become a business owner like this gentleman. Unfortunately, I have very little savings, spotty tax records, and have not done the necessary research into business management. I'd love to get some general advice from someone who is a little further down the path than me.

    Ahhhh
I am a professional illustrator/designer and I desperately want to figure out a way to live here while having enough time to focus on and become independent in Japan. I don't want to be stuck teaching English forever. I know there are a few routes that can be taken but my japanese is low and my business acumen is even lower. ESPECIALLY when it comes to this level of management. I feel so stuck right now because all I want to do is live and work in Japan but I can't figure out a strategy for how just yet.

Absolutely the best video I have watched so far about setting up the visa I think I need in Japan. Thank you so much for making this video! Will definitely watch the full video in a moment, though I am still probably going to talk to immigration lawyers about this to help as my Japanese level is extremely low at present (I intend to go to classes once I have moved over). At least I now know the key words needed to address the possible concept as the last lawyer I spoke to from Tokyo was pretty much like "nope, can't be done."

Super valuable information! Although I contacted around 9 Japanese immigration law offices that speak english about doing the steps for immigration but none of them responded. Is there a different way to get in contact with a Japanese immigration attorney to get the ball started? I have all the requirements ready for my business that i've been running for 4 years. Thanks for everything you're doing!

Interesting, he was able to get the business manager visa without having registered a company. Did he section off part of his residence/ property as his office? I'm assuming it's a home office. Interested in doing this myself

  • @Z_Victory_Z

Good info. And he's right about not needing an immigration lawyer for the vast majority of issues (not only in Japan, but virtually any country); I was able to--on my own--travel to Hiroshima and place a bid through public auction at the local courthouse on a foreclosed upon property there. A lot of these "expat specialty" businesses offered their services (at an astronomical rate/handler fee) to do all the paperwork for me, but it was all nonsense. All you really need is--like Donald said--an intermediate ability to read Japanese, and maybe a native speaker friend to check your paperwork for you (make sure you've dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's), and you'll be fine. Immigration lawyers are absolutely not necessary. They cannot do for you anything that you can't already do for yourself.
