What a blast from the past. From my parents, to my 4 brothers and 3 sisters, we would all cram into our sitting room on a sunday nht to watch this together. It was the only time we actually watched something together without fighting. Great memories. Thank you ❤️
The adverts were better than the main TV programmes of today... The Xmas tv back then lasted about 2 weeks and it was worth watching sometimes before we all had videos you had to miss good programmes on one channel to watch good programmes on another ... ...
I met Judith Chalmers years ago in Blackpool, at the helicopter ride and we had a short chat waiting for the flight. She was absolutely lovely, so sweet and kind. It is a really good memory.
I can't belive Dennis Norden only died last month! Bless him. The worse part of getting old as a child of the 70's is that everybody you remember from your childhood is either a nonce or dead, or both.
Fantastic. I was allowed up at the age of ten to watch this at our big family Christmas at my Nan's farmhouse. I remember the "Cannonball Run" clip very well, and it still gives me a really good chuckle today.

Love the Upload Thanks I love the Advert for TCP That's exactly what my Great Uncle used to give me when i had a sore throat when i was about 8 or 9 can still taste it now LOL
Oh my gosh, so many memories here. Thank the universe I was born in an age where normalcy prevailed. Not like todays world where they are looking at crazy in the rear view mirror 😱
4:23 nice to see Hoges (before Crocodile Dundee) even if it is a Foster's beer ad. Around the same time he (and John Cornell) also appeared in various magazine / poster ads for Winfield cigarettes (carrying the famous slogan "anyhow ... have a Winfield").
night time hermit when you have acquired a “licence to print money” you simply can’t stop, you never got enough. So you impose compulsory dumbing down and any fool can make programmes because the worse they are, the more the plebs love it
great upload, I have an old VHS copy of this somewhere too. Looking at the 'Lineup' for ITV Boxing Day, my god, ITV really did throw in the towel at Christmas didn't they lol. BBC stuffed them like Turkeys, every year lol.
33:42. Fantastic :-) and 38:48 always cracks me up. Just the look on the guys face, and that glance at the watch :-) also, major kudos for not removing the ads and keeping it as a pure time capsule. The ads are great!
33:43 to 34:05 - This little anecdote from that particular broadcaster (can't remember his name) about how he was finally able to perfect the pronunciation of a West African politician's name was so brilliantly deadpan - hilarious - my favourite clip in the show.
Thank you so much for the uploads. Loving the betamax continuity. It's great to see properly de-interlaced content as well. Dont suppose you have the game for a laugh as well?
Back when television didn't dumb down to the most easily offended members of the audience. This was a time when the intelligence of the viewer was appreciated. Much better times.
i always wondered why the Thames / LWT region always used those three anonymous squares to start advert breaks when other regions across the UK would begin with their station logo or at least a version of it. Sue Peacock always looked like a sex starved librarian to me. Mind you she WAS right to mention the weather conditions. the winter of 1981/82 was HIDEOUSLY cold and snowy, one of the worst i have ever suffered through.Congrats on picture quality!.
gees that was ace, plus the ad's etc. what was the clip from at 56.00, that was set in the 2nd world war era, cos i know i have watched that programme, but love to watch it again.
That's from How We Used To Live, the schools history series. That whole series is on YT, and here's the specific episode: ruclips.net/video/pHhXpDQe4qU/видео.html

I remember Xmas telly on ITV. Suddenly, the adverts are mainly holiday destinations and travel agents! Great nostalgia.
That's when my dad used to stuff," that's it! Christmas is over"

The Xmas tv back then lasted about 2 weeks and it was worth watching sometimes before we all had videos you had to miss good programmes on one channel to watch good programmes on another ... ...
I do miss Dennis Norden - he was a fine script writer, and all-round lovely man. Lived to be 96 - wish he could have gone on forever.
I miss him too
He is ..in another place than this. A timeless place, - timeless like this humour
H e would have looked terrible....

I can't belive Dennis Norden only died last month! Bless him. The worse part of getting old as a child of the 70's is that everybody you remember from your childhood is either a nonce or dead, or both.
RIP Denis Norden. So talented and charming. This is real nostalgia! And RIP Woolworth too!!
A real tonic. These shows are always as fresh and funny as the day they were first shown!

He was a brilliant storyteller, that’s what made it so great to watch. You not only had the BEST outtakes , but he set the mood better than anyone 😂

Well over a decade before I was born and still seems like a better world to live in than our modern dramafest.
It was a brilliant show, i remember watching it at the time. But those adds just brought back so much memories, Classic.
Rest in peace Denis norden 1922-2018 you will be sadly missed by us all
My god this brings back memories including the ads like Windsor Davis on the advert for Woolworths.
My lovely boy...

The 10 year old me was probably playing Manic Miner on my ZX Spectrum while my parents watched this :)
Sadly unlikely - the Spectrum wasn't released until 4 months after this went out, and Manic Miner wasn't released until 1983 :)

Good to see John Noakes, Peter Purves and Val Singleton, the best era of Blue Peter.
I came here to watch this for a laugh then i felt so sad to hear his passing. He was the god of the blooper reel and will be dearly missed.
Griff Rhys Jones was a shocking replacement...didn't suit him at all ...
Dennis was such a natural....
He was in his 90s. You have to let it go.
This is worth it for the Spike Milligan commercial alone.
Excuse me? "Worth it" doesn't necessarily refer to money.
10 years old when this was on, and remember watching it with my sis n folks, Bloody brilliant
TV in the early to mid 80's was simpler and much better than today's.
Love seeing old TV coverage from yesteryear - adverts included. Reminds me of being young ! I was 8 yrs old when this was broadcast :)
I'd just turned 10 the week before.
8 for me, too.
Joanne Gray I turned 10 25 days earlier. Tv was worth watching back then. Great days.

Thank you very much. :P
6 minutes before the programme starts
Just realised that the Jamaica tourist ad uses the same tune as John Lennon's "Merry Xmas War Is Over".
How did you get the quality so good. This MUST have been on an ANCIENT VHS tape!!
It was from a Betamax tape. And 1981 really isn't ancient for either Betamax or VHS - the oldest Beta tapes are from 1975, the oldest VHS from 1976.
😋”Not the nine o clock News “ got the “Game for a Laugh " sketch bang on. What the hell are the audience on at the very beginning....??
It was Thames/LWT that did the Christmas 1981 ITV network idents
An absolute excellent idea to include the ad breaks. Is it just me or are some of the ad's better than some of our current tv programs?....
these series are the best much funnier than the later series.
The woman leaving the audience on the 3-2-1 clip, maybe she left because she forgot to turn the oven off at home!!!
