I listened to this album in the dark with headphones on, expecting not to like the rest of the album as much as the singles. I was elevated to another world. What an ethereal and gorgeous experience. I love all of the new ways Lana is using her vocals, I love the unique production, I love the lyrical content…Lana continues to innovate. I’m sure there are some people who won’t give this a chance after not being hooked on first listens. I know there are some who will live with this album a bit and have an epiphany. And I KNOW, because we’ve seen this before with Lana, that ten years from now, when young artists are taking inspiration from this album and presenting it in a more palatable way…all of a sudden people will come back to this album and say that they always knew this album was genius. Just how it works.
She said this album is of her thoughts, and for her, I really admire all of these songs, idk if it’s it’s bc I’m a true extreme fan where she releases anything I find the art she puts in anything
this album ripped me wide open. i cried in every single song except let the light in. my best friend and i had to literally pull over to hold each other and weep during kintsugi.
This album on first listen was an amazing experience. I will say I don't like the interludes at all, maybe I'll play the Jon Batiste Interlude if I want to listen to the entire album. The last three songs are insane 💅😭✨
Loved your very honest reaction to this album. Lana said this album was very wordy, and after my first couple of listens, I'm glad I had that in my mind. I'll need to really spend time with the lyrics across many of these songs, particularly through the middle stretch. That said, some of the moments in this album have already etched themselves deep into my mind. I appreciate that Lana is at this point in her career where she's truly working on her own artistic level and isn't pandering to anyone's expectations of herself except her own. Sometimes that means making art that demands more of us - our time, our emotions, and our patience, too. I think as I continue to listen to this album (it's pretty much my weekend plan to listen to this on repeat, only taking a break for the Yellowjackets premier lol) it will grow on me more and more.
My favorites are Tunnel under Ocean Blvd, Fingertips, Grandfather and Peppers. This album is not her catchiest one but it was never meant to be. I really appreciate how raw and intimate it is.
Father John Misty is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter. FJM and Lana have jam sessions together often and support each other’s work. Lana has covered one of his songs, he was in her music video for Freak.
Lana and FJM also have a song called "buddy's rendezvous". I love FJM so much I wish he had a solo verse like sean lennon in tomorrow never came. I think that song and Let The Light In are basically the same vibe
The “Angelina Jolie” part in Peppers is a sample from Tommy Genesis “Angelina”. You should def check out Tommy her debut self titled album is nothing but Bangers 🥵
Venice Bitch is the 9 minute song from NFR, that’s what “vb” stands for in taco truck x vb. It’s sort of like a 2.0 of the song. It reminds me of when charli xcx re-did Track 10 with Blame It On Your Love feat. Lizzo.
I actually like the album better in reverse. Completely opposite track list. Start with Taco Truck and end with The Grants. It works great. Maybe like a tunnel has two directions, the album is intended to be played that way too ha. Either way, I agree, The Grants sounds like an ending. So does the title track, which is track 2...hmm...
Didn't realice how hard to digest were this album until i saw your video cause for me was a "First listen fall in love" one - first time that this happened since NFR! - So i guess it is an album from Lana die hard fans, cause for me its already in my top 3. Hope the album can grow for you, great video!
I am a huge Lana fan and I was a bit confused through the first listen as well. In my opinion, I think the album is existential and spiritual-all of her work is but it’s really at the forefront here. It’s about getting older, learning more about herself and her family, processing loss and grief, reflecting on her life choices (eg is she ever going to have a baby and settle down or is that not what she truly wants), and continuing to break to rediscover herself again and again. She’s been processing a lot of trauma it seems and may have turned closer to religion/spirituality. That’s a scary process (hence the ominous tone) since you have to go to the darkest places in yourself (eg patterns of fickle or toxic relationships/desires in Candy Necklaces). I’m thinking the tone shift at the end may be a bit of a “f you” to the critics and listeners who don’t really get her and want her to keep churning out what they want instead of appreciating her artistry and trying to understand her as a person and an artist (hence feeling like an American w****). However, I also think she’s saying those lively, sexy, and fun parts are still there and that she’s not one dimensional. She can be heady and existential, while also wanting to party, be light and have fun. This album IS an exercise in attention (I love how you put that) and an exercise of going on the ride through the ups and the downs. After all, isn’t that what life is about?
curious for this reaction, had such mixed thoughts first listening, my second listen score is 8.6/10, the lyrical content and messiness in sone tracks and trap beats werent my thing at first, still not my favourite but didn’t ruin the album or make it as miced as my first listen, second listen i now really enjoy it, curious to see what you think
haha I wish there were more trap beats :( I have listened through again just chilling and it's grown, but agree, not my favourite, but still very nice to listen to
the album starts dark woth heavy topics like her r@pe, suicidal thoughts, and family memories. then goes to light songs like margaret, paris texas, peppers, taco truck. kinda like going to a dark tunnel and then going out. thats why “let the light in” is mentioned in most of the trucks
Interesting review SYML is a successful artist in his own right Currently on tour Check out his amazing music It’s fabulous He wrote the track for Paris (Texas) a piano version and Lana added the lyrics to make it her own for the album. Venice Bitch an older track she obviously hadn’t finished experimenting with. Agree, very long album.
I have listened to this album some more…. If u delete the interludes, it is worlds better. The last 3 jams & singles with Sweet & Candy Necklace are the keepers….
Their best albums are NRF, Ultraviolance and Born to Die, would rank the new album at number 4 and then Lust for Life followed closely by Honeymoon. Their worst for me was Chemtrails... although I love the song Yosemite. Blue Banisters ranks somewhere between the existing ones. The song Arcardia alone is a masterpiece. ❤

@@bennshouts to me, I makes sense if you approach the album with the concept that it’s pretty much an album that summarizes her life. Everything that adds and takes away from it. The album plays like a soundtrack to a play/musical.
I'm pretty sure Let the light in, she's talking to herself like "hey Lana I'm lizzy. You have to let the light in. I wake up you in the middle of the night to drive around, but now put the Beatles on and go back to bed and take care of yourself, go and record some of our songs, I love you and I don't wanna hate you. Let's go back to who we were". And Fishtail is a song to her fans who wanted her to keep doing sad songs.. There's a lot of references to her old song and it's almost like she's talking to her stans. They want her sadder, but she's not anymore. She's seeing the light, she's bringing back her old style. Lizzy is back, and you can see it in Peppers and Taco truck. And at the end of the album, she screams "never die, not tonight, Lake Placid (where she was born), and her last words in this album are" signing off bang bang kiss kiss". She always give a lot of attention on how to end a album, it's very important of her as her last message.
I would live for a Lana album inspired by the Smashing Pumpkins song Eye… A&W was giving me back to those feels of great vocals mixed with an insane beat!!! Ok I’m gonna stop now 😂
maybe you are not that of and alternative guy. ive figured you mainly enjoy mainstream pop. great reaction, but surprised you didnt liked acndy necklace and let the light in, both are on my top 3 along a&w.
Mmm, not sure. I honestly can't even remember how they sound, it really all did blend in one the first listen. I remember the let the light in line though haha. But yeah def a pop lover, I do like alternative stuff, I dunno if I'd class Lana that tho 😂
@@bennshouts well she has the record for most n1 alternative albums so hahaha maybe idk. i think youtube might’ve ate my other comment? anywho, i think fishtail, is about a turbulent/abusive relationship. presumably the “don’t say that you’ll braid my hair/if you don’t really care” line means don’t say you’ll be there for me when you won’t be. then in the verses she seems to be sharing a nostalgia and romanticization of said relationship. the “i’ve been thinking about how things used to be” and “i know that we’ve got problems, i plan to address them another day” “maybe i’ll take my glasses off so i stop painting red flags green”. then the “you wanted me sadder” chorus could mean this person was purposefully sabotaging and/or hurting her and didn’t want her to thrive and be happy, all the while claiming they cared for her. i actually really loved let the light in 😅 but i guess that’s what this album is like, there’s something different for everyone. i think it’s about trying to reconcile/make up with a romantic partner after an argument. “let the light in, at your back door yelling ‘cause i wanna come in” and “i love to love to love to love you, i hate to hate to hate to hate you”
Ok, am I the only one who doesn’t like this album except for the 3 tracks she released before today and 2 more? Please be kind, I love her previous albums and it was always love, instantly or after a few listens, this time, I feel the voice and the music are disconnected, not in an interesting and intentional way, in my opinion, of course.
So funny you say this, I am such a lyrical based person, for almost half the album I couldn't see ANY lyrics, Apple Music didn't load them, I ended up turning to genus, towards the end of the album, regret not doing that from the beginning tbh.
I had to delete the 2 interludes completely. They bring the whole album down. After hearing Raye’s masterpiece this year, I’m reminded of how I’ve missed songs with amazing writing but that can also turn up… im just in a feel good mind set & after A&W gave me life, I was prepared for more beats FINALLY. But NO, it’s just more wordy ballads…. IDK…. This is the first Lana album that I’ve ever deleted anything from & have felt true dissatisfaction: I’m gonna need Dark Paradise or Doin Time Lana back ASAP. I mean at least Taylor went back to slow jams after Folklore & Evermore….. Midnights was just a pleasant surprise as well. And I know u can’t compare artists really, I just mean I’m NOT in the mood for this honestly. Blue Banisters & Chemtrails were ballad heavy but I at least loved most of those albums except for a few tracks without a ton of effort
Go listen some pop if you don't like Lana at her best. BTW folklore and evermore are far better than Midnights in my opinion. Anyway, not to be mad but you seem to be a kind of person that enjoys upbeat music. You like Doin' Time but I assume you haven't listened to Norman F Rockwell or at least know why is Doin' Time on that album. Just accept Lana is not a mainstream comercial pop girl.
Think dirty for what “hands on your knees I’m Angelina Jolie” means. 🫢Tommy Genesis confirmed that she likes to role play as Angelina Jolie in the bedroom lol.
This album was amazing! :) Glad you reacted to it.

I don’t get why people get “confused”. It’s just music
Music does a lot of things to people, being confused one of them lol
I was hoping to hear your take on the lyrics but maybe that’s not ur forté 😅
Yeah for such a lyric heavy album he didn't really pay attention to them at all lol
So funny you say this, I am such a lyrical based person, for almost half the album I couldn't see ANY lyrics, Apple Music didn't load them, I ended up turning to genus, towards the end of the album, regret not doing that from the beginning tbh.
You should try natalia kills
everytime i watch your vids i have an internal conflict trying to figure out if you’re a brit or an aussie
Haha I'm Australian 😛
It’s definitely an australian accent

Move on from Lana then, you're not gonna be happy with her future albums if you don't appreciate her poetry.
Totally fair!
Bro I need your help can you help me?
Sure, what's up?

You sound like a child.
boring album, boring melodies boring lyrics, tedious , listening to it is like working
then it’s not for u
Yeah its just boring, even worse than Blue Banisters :/
Go and listen to summertime sadness remix then, we wont miss you ❤
@@marcosdelapuente6659 Nah, Ill stick to NFR, Chemtrails, UV and Honeymoon thank you very much. Stay clownish ! 🤡
You obviously don't pay attention to song writing 💀 this was her best written album
Think dirty for what “hands on your knees I’m Angelina Jolie” means. 🫢Tommy Genesis confirmed that she likes to role play as Angelina Jolie in the bedroom lol.
haha iconic
Its a beautiful album, but its in my opinion her weakest yet, this and Blue Banisters are Gorgeous albums, but still the weakest.
yeah its def a mixed album amongst everyone haha
this album top 2 with NFR imo
