- On October 30, 2024 at 10am PT the multiplayer services for the legacy version of Age of Empires III cease to run. Microsoft announced that this is due to the technology no longer being supported. In this video, I exactly showed the shutdown of the server, which has been running for almost 20 years...! R.I.P. ESO (2005-2024).

What's your best memory of ESO?
2008-2024.... I had been playing Aoe since it came out and had to wait a few years after college to buy a new PC, and made sure it could play Aoe 3 perfectly. It was my whole purpose in wanting a new computer...! logging in for the first few times in my apartment after spending years just reading the back of the game package and looking at the beautiful graphics every time I went to a big box store. Asian Dynasties was already out and I realized I was quite bad at it but found the best most dynamic way to play the game was in FFA that allowed for basically anything to happen. From then on was hooked on mastering FFA and been the best return on investment and longest lived game I ever played.
@@jacobe1942 I agree that FFA allows anything to happen and had plenty of crazy games with this mode (German mercs then revo with imperial howitzers, Spanish ronins with unctions, France's grenadiers FI with Swiss Pikes, Iroquois Mantlets fest, Sioux Tashunke Prowler's surprise strikes, Aztec sending several times 1000 gold before resignign and making a treasure of gold for remaining players to find, China play with flamethrower masses or producing the largest goat herd of all time by sending goats to opponents in all directions, etc... these are some of my best memories !) I'm also happy to have made people discover the King of the Hill mode one day before the close down and we probably played the last KOTH FFA on ESO
eso/age 3 was my first online game. met a life long friend there.
@@pikilic4481 I think we have played some games before... howlingwolfpaw... Yes those types of whacky strats are what made FFA so great.... making ronin win unction could never be done in a pro game but in FFA If you were patient and struck strategically could be devastating. For Iros I also like mass battering rams from 2-3 directions that dissolve bases. Every civ had some great creative strats like that. KOTH is also a great game mode that for some reason was not that well represented through all its years. I enjoyed it well but was mostly a purist for FFA Random Large Maps. Being able to master that is the greatest challenge, and sometimes it required no fighting at all...
i will miss it.

I remember being a pleb lieutenant in 3v3s. Sometimes I was in games with snow, Kaiserklein, sir musket. Good times.
What a sadness to see this, I never thought this day would come so soon, the worst thing is that the same company did not make any tribute to this great classic game that marked a before and after in the rts.
Someone has to do it, here I am. I couldn't just let this pass without any tribute. I mean, the server was up for almost 20 years. Almost 2,6 million accounts were made...!
Soon? It were 20 years, back after 3 years I was surprised that such an old game had still og Servers running well. Thats not the usual case, 20 years is long! Very long. And really now, the tribute they made for such an amazing game is the Definitive Edition, like it or not.
this game brought so many memories, atleast im happy to have played it before it shutdown... RIP
600 hours on steam. Not a single online game.

Damn... I remember the months before AOE3 DE was released. There were so many team games on Deccan running all day long. What a time great time that was...
@@VanNguyen-hp1yz Good times indeed. 3v3 Deccan is played in the Definitive Edition as well though. Maybe also take a look there? :)
@@MCJimAgeofEmpiresIII It's not the same. The people who played on ESO in early to mid 2020 were veterans. The players on DE are not as communicative or cooperative as the players from TAD.

This made me very sad to see.
I had been active from 2005-2008, then 2010-2011, and finally from 2022-2024.
Back in the spring I had stopped playing again in part because of an unreliable internet connection, and because I wanted to finish off some other projects.
Had I known in advance that this was going to happen so soon I would have returned one last time to bid farewell.
At least I recognised some of the names on the chat browser, so I know that some people that I had known back in the day were still around.
To tell you the truth, I only found out a few hours ago that this had happened -- I had just finished purchasing some Age of Empires 3 DE expansion civs when I noticed that the original AOE 3 was no longer on Steam (I already had both a hardcopy and digital copy).
Very unfortunate...
At the least I had hoped that profiles would remain accessible, even if no further games could be played.
Lastly, since they already have a "basic" version of AOE 3 DE that is free, it might be worth it if Microsoft or one of its affiliates associated with the game consider making Age of Empires 3 Vanilla and its two expansion packs -- The War Chiefs and The Asian Dynasties -- free to play, as that would surely give some free advertisement for their future titles, and also allow those with existing accounts the chance to play this game once again with a fresh audience.

Good times! I give them credit for running the service so smoothly for so long. Been a while since I played, but whenever I've checked in over the last decade, just to see what's up, it was always there.

I see this as a perfect reason to do a riot to microsoft,especially after focusing on AOE II after giving them 5 DLCs in a row,but not even maintaining AOE 3 enjoyers

@@MCJimAgeofEmpiresIII The rating ladder indicated that this game would last until at least January 1, 2038.
Probably in part helped catch me off guard when it was seemingly shut down out of nowhere.
I thought, i had removed some of game’s files. 😢
@@alicanemiir Many people who have not seen this news will be surprised when connecting to the ESO server. I think this will go on for a while, sadly :(
