NOTES: As of October of 2013, these signals no longer exist and gates have been installed
This video was shot at the Van Winkle Ave railroad crossing in Hawthorne New Jersey.
The crossing signals date back to the late 1940's
Crossing Info:
Signal on Right: 2 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights
Signal on Left: 3 pairs of GRS (General Railway Signal) 8 inch lights and a WC Hayes mechanical bell.
This 57 car train is heading north.

Thank You! Yes it's common to a freight train in new jersey. CSX and Norfolk Southern run through NJ as well as the Susquehanna. Conrail used to run through NJ too, but they were discontinued in 1999 and were taken over by Norfolk Southern and CSX.

They do! These Type of bells are some of my favorites!
Thank You! I thought they were US&S lights HC81stoo, until I looked at the back of them and they had the WRRS logo.

The only thing the maintainer told me is that this crossing and the Ringwood ave crossing are the ones schedualed to be upgraded. He didn't mention any other crossing.
The other maintainer also told me that every crossing along the line will be upgraded withen the next 50 years.

I sure hope this upgrade isn't the start of the crossing Armageddon where every crossing on the line will supposedly be upgraded
194?-2013. These signals are gone and sadly, they will most likely be scrapped since I couldn't contact the railroad in time
Am I the only one who thinks those old 8 inch lights are brighter than the 12 inch incandescent lights?

Have you been able to recover any equipment from these signals? I'm going to write a follow up letter soon to. NySW to refresh their memory of giving me the Ringwood avenue bell once the crossing is upgraded
