“Finding the fuel when the tank is empty”. It might not be the greatest way to develop mental toughness, but I use hiking 14’ers as a way for me. You get in that 12k range and the air is thinner and your HR is high and you start having that “poor me” mentality in your brain but you still have 2k ft and the air will get thinner and thinner. While coming down the mountain is obviously easier, I’ve found it breaks a lot of people mentally because they view the 14k ft peak as the end and they give 100% to get there, but it’s really only 50% of the way and now they have to find something within that will keep pushing them. I’ve found the mental strength gains come on the way down the mountain when you realize you have a long ways to go and you have no choice but to keep going. There really is a way for everyone, but it’s the way for me. I get good mental strength gains, great views, and long distance endurance work, and I enjoy it.

Yesterday, this talk showed in my feed because I re-discovered Stew’s workouts. Civilian here, but you can be “initiated” to the next level by Stew’s running-5-miles-daily-for-years or completing Jeff’s Hypertrophy-Strength-Endurance cycles yearly. Gut checks - in any field - have no power to grow/sustain you.
