@TinHouseStudioUK You're in England - enjoy it while you can! 🙂I once spend three months in England, from New Year's Day to almost Easter, in what was then the worst winter in living memory, and never saw the sun once. 😞
But the advice, as usual was excellent.

"Keep putting film through the camera" was good advice given to me. If it's quiet, don't take a day off, or a week off. Shoot some personal work. Keep being creative. Keep things moving forward. Keep your mind and your creativity in the game so you're sharp and ready when it picks up again. As you say, you have to love the process.

I shot for decades for Major League Baseball and the NFL. I have a great collection of photos of some of the worlds greatest players. You know what, I'm not really into sports. I wish I had spent those years shooting bands and that I had a great collection of photos of top players and musicians. My lesson, shoot what you love!!

That was a great advice video! I was a news photographer and had the fortunate experience to work with a former NBC reporter who was at the beginning of television news in the early 1950's. He told me, "when in doubt, shoot". "shoot it anyway" . Today, at 73 years old, I am shooting architectural images as a photographic interest. When out on a shoot a little voice goes off im my head and says: " you should shoot that". And yes, I should. Good advice every time.

Was watching my friend's instagram the last couple of months, thinking she was on a creative roll and living her best life. I was happy for her, but had a mild twinge of envy, of course.
Met up with her last week, and she starts telling me all the things that have happened since last fall to make this a terrible, traumatic period in her life. She was dragging herself to shoots she'd previously committed to, then going home and hiding from the world in her apartment.
Not to say that people should feel bad all the time instead of enjoying their accomplishments, but it was certainly a reminder that you can't always assume that what you see is the entire truth.

Nailed it, as always. My mentors gave me great advice, too. As a budding 15 year old, my first photojournalism mentor handed me his Leica M3 and said, "Go out and see the world, kid. But don't drop it!!" Later, when I apprenticed with a master printer, he told me, "You don't just see light, you feel it." That one took me a while to understand, but when I did, it was glorious. And in college, my professor stressed, "If everyone is going right, go left. See what they don't. And do it in your way, always."
Anyone can master f-stops and shutter speeds, especially today, but that next step takes profound help from those who came before us and are willing to share their knowledge, mentors.

The best advice I have received, and I keep sharing it with others, is to "Keep shooting and reviewing the photos later". Years ago, a photographer told me that, and It has helped me a long way. He explains that "later" means a while. It is always fascinating how people could see his photos so differently, even just after a week or so. It allows one to reflect on their work with refreshed eyes and improve and understand the mistakes during shooting; people couldn't lie to themselves easily. And also, buy second-hand gear, of course.

"if it ain't broke.. Don't fix it".. " Don't be a sheep".. "Long time dead".. All good advice my grandad and me dad gave me in the '70s .. And now it takes a stranger 40 years later for me to listen.. Because of a shared interest.! Brilliant. I love your vids/blogs/whatever nowadays but you blew me away when you said your favourite cam was F1. Sometimes I wish my dad had given me his cam instead of a Mecanno set when I was younger... But I grew up to be an engineer.. And I'm pretty good at it. Not making great money, Not a millionaire But I go to sleep every night safe in the knowledge I've done my best and my customers are happy. And we can't all fix the world we can only do our best. No I am not a great photographer but I try.. ( I can't play any instruments either.. ) Keep it up Scott .. I've re-Subscribed.. Thankyou for good wisdom. Be happy. Many success and hope your effort helps humanity through dark times.... : )

I’m a hobbyist. I did try to become at least semi-professional, but in the end decided I didn’t want to shoot what other people wanted me to shoot. However, the best piece of advice I was given was if you want to know what makes a good photo then study the masters of photography. It was on a course and we studied, Eggleston, Atget, Strand and Frank amongst a whole host of others.

Don't ignore the things that scare you the most. e.g. if you are worried about your balance sheet, don't ignore it, look at it everyday to know where you are really at. Or if you aren't skilled on something, don't avoid it, dive into it and learn more. Your mind is telling you your weaknesses. Address them.

Lots of people will disagree with those but once a friend photographer told me : “get the best camera you can afford at the time. Get it done with it, squeeze it full and forget about wasting your time looking for supposedly better/newer gear”.
Another one was given by a pro photographer when I was starting, and showing my book I was proud saying “I shot it all full Manual”, which is beginner’s graal. He asked me why on earth I had thousands pounds équipement if not use its features : understanding of how the camera works and how it can help shoot more great photos for clients was been a pro, not shooting full Manual. Clients don’t care how you do it and don’t pay more.

Its not exactly advice, but the best quote I've heard is the one by Ira Glass about taste and I still read it when I'm feeling crap about my work. I've been lucky enough to have had a steady stream of business for the past few years, but suddenly find myself back to hustling (which I REALLY hate), as its a quiet start to the year. Its crazy how anxious it makes you. Should I just give up, I keep asking myself, I'm not brimming over with confidence at the best of times. I can actually hear you saying 'don't be pathetic' so I'll take your advice.

  • @VirgileLeBigot

The best advice I get is from a video with Michael Jackson and he said : "Study the great and become greater. And be a scientist, dissect."
And seconds after, the same idea you shared : "I don't care if the whole world is against you or tease you or say you're not gonna make it. Believe in yourself, no matter what. Some of the greatest men that made a mark on this world were treated like that: You're not gonna do it, you're not gonna get anywhere. They laughed at the Wright Brothers, they laughed at Thomas Edison, they laughed at Walt Disney, they made jokes of Henry Ford... These are men that shaped and changed our culture, our customs, the way we live, the way we do things."
The idea he shared about his music is also applicable in photography "Don't get in the way of photography let the photography takes itself" meaning again like you said don't get too technical or too much in control, be sure the subject looks beautiful and let some magic happen.
    Very inspiring!

Why did you hate it ?

    • @brucetreloar3200
      @brucetreloar3200 4 месяца назад +1

@@nallontrails why? I started out because the particular museum had its challenges with light and "character" of the displays. I enjoyed the challenge. And the results. However demand for new images and prints became such that it was nolonger fun. Money aside I struggled for new creative ideas and my output started to look all the same. I was also doing work for a large web site. Different subject but similar style. The demand for my work also increased to the point it wasn't fun any more.
I guess I enjoyed being a "partime" freelance photographer rather than being a fulltime professional. The last straw was a multinational company who purchased one of my images. Then ignored the contract re "No editing". They said that they could outspent me in court so what to do? I stopped trying to be a pro and went back to supplying images for a few magazines.
Moral of the story is that being a well known, in demand, photographer wasn't for me.
Keep up the videos. I always enjoy your insights.

I think the last idea is a major fallacy. Just sticking with something doesn't mean success is around the corner. I've known people who lost everything; livelihood, savings, even a roof over their heads because they followed that ideal. There is a point when you have to realize that failure is real and there isn't anyway to fix it. Many times failure can and will definitely turn into catastrophic failure if one doesn't pack it in and change course. I'm glad that you have been fortunate to have the silver linings and "it's darkest before dawn" moments in your career though.
