Although he knew various languages, Kit Carson did not learn to read or write because he did not attend school after his father died when he was 8 years old. He became the only illiterate US Army general toward the end of his life - based on Hampton's Sides very entertaining biography of Kit Carson entitled Blood and Thunder : The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquuest of the American West 2007.
Studied abt Kit a lot as he was my 2nd great grandfathers uncle. It should be noted that several of Kits elder brothers, Moses, Andrew, and Robert were either the fur trade or involved with the Santa Fe Trail. Moses was involved in fur trapping the Missouri river as early as 1814 and was in Santa Fe a year before Kit. Moses was also in the same Ewing Young expedition to CA as Kit but remained in CA for many years, later joining Fremont and Kit in the Mexican American war in CA. Brothers Andrew and Robert were part of the 2nd George Sibley surveying party to map the Santa Fe Trail. There is also an Alexander Carson who may have been Kits cousin. He was associated with the end of the Lewis and Clark expedition and trapped the Pacific Northwest before being killed by Indians in 1836.
Here to learn more. My uncle told me our Turley cousins, Kit Carson hid in one of their freight wagons and they smuggled Kit Carson out (from what threat or to where I don’t know) 😂 they owned a freight hauling business on the Santa Fe trail and lived near his family
In the movie, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Colonel Canby is mention, and that his command was chasing the remnants of defeated Confederate forces across the desert.
He was not related to Kit Carson. Johnny Carson's Dads name was Homer Carson, and his nickname was "Kit", but there is no relation to Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson.
Mule Hill is called that because they ate the mules there they thought it would be better then leaving them as a gift to the enemy I know this cause I grew up 3 miles away from it interstate 15 runs right next to it
True story. A few years ago, I was driving from NY to Colorado Springs. In Kansas, instead of taking 70 into Limon, CO, I got off on Rt 40 near Oakley, KS. By the time I hit the CO border, it was night, and I was in the middle of the worst storm I'd ever seen. 70mph winds, hail, lightning. By the time I made it to Cheyenne Wells, CO, it had stopped. I stopped at a store there, decompressed a bit, then went on my way. Then I got to Kit Carson, CO. Once in town, my GPS started turning me around in circles. I stopped at a gas station that was closed for the night, rebooted my GPS and started off again. GPS said turn left while I was in town, I turned left. Went down a short hill, and drove for a couple hours, nothing in sight. The road was winding a lot. Finally saw a stop light, went up a small hill, and I was in Colorado Springs. Thought nothing of it until I left and drove back east. Couldn't find the same road, drove through Kit Carson again and the road I had previously turned left on wasn't there. Couldn't find it on a map. Next trip, I stayed on rt 70 into Limon because fuck Kit Carson spooky ass shit. Motherfucker is haunting his namesake town or something.
Reviewing facts mr carson had more than one wife I am not sure if all those eight children were from one mother And I am not sure all the children lived to be adults....
An excellent mini documentary on Kit Carson. Thank you. We could sure use his help now, with the coming struggle. BTW, he was my great great uncle.
I wasn't aware the Civil War reached that far west. Thank you for the excellent video.
It is always interesting to hear that such a man of action died peacefully. He had many a close call in his life.
