I'm so glad I finally clicked on an 'Ultra' series showcase. I never did because I thought 'Ah, well it's active, so it won't sound like a "real" p-bass', but it totally does. I'll have to check some more videos about this series out.
This instrument sounds amazing and versatile. Not sure why the American Ultra Jazz Bass and Jazz seem to get more love (including from Fender, see the neck binding on those), way more videos of those basses on RUclips.. Videos like this are very valuable then for helping people learn about the Ultra P. bass.
First off, pentatonic scale is where most people want you. Take it from someone that has played on quite a few known and not-so-known albums. I have other ways in my "box", but 99% of the artists cock their head quizzically when I pull much of that out. 😀 Outstanding review! I have a couple of passive P-basses. I was curious about picking up an active one.
Picked up an Ultra P about a year and a half ago and literally haven't put it down since. Those high treble tones kick into play when you have old strings. The neck is sublime. Great review. Still love watching it. Thanks.
@@EmpireMusicPgh Over in the UK my man so a little far away but anyway, Have subscribed. Tell Anthony he nailed both the J and P Reviews. Great player, good ear. I am probs going to get a P ultra - these reviews defo provided some great insight compared to others. Cheers, will check in when i come across the pond for sure.
Amazing playing and review! What strings do you recommend for this? I have the Elite and love the bass but the strings that came with it leave something to be desired. Keep em coming!
Try Elixir Nanoweb strings - I use their 40-95 set on most of my Fenders. They give a very clear and defined tone & last about ten times longer than other brands without the nanoweb coating.
@@phipschi4255 You still get nice string tension with the 40-95 set, just more flexibility for bends. Try them. Most you’ll have to change action height is about half a turn at the bridge saddles if you usually use 45-105. They give a lovely punchy fundamental sound too.
am i right to say if you have difficulty choosing between precision of jazz bas, this is the solution too have both in one and in any case a very nice p bass? i am looking a bass to record mostly, and i understood many times the p bass is more suited for that. But being able to make a sound more close to jazz bass, i could still achieve that?
I can understand calling a Precision bass a ‘p’ bass, because I totally get that 3 syllables is just a hassle, but calling a Jazz bass a ‘j’ bass.... I don’t feel that so much. And I won’t even mention the whole ‘vers’ instead of ‘versus’.
When comparing the recent ultra pbass videos to the elite pbass videos I've seen, the ultra seems to me to sound generally fatter and more 'raspy' than the elite (which is more pleasing to me). Perhaps it's just different amps/recording/players etc. Anthony, would you say there is a difference in sound between the ultra vs. elite series (pbass-neck pickup in particular)?
Hey Mark - Anthony here. I didn't do a straight A/B comparison, as we don't have the elite in-stock any longer. You're spot on though, sounded very big and thumpy! I didn't need to boost the bass on the eq to achieve that either. My take away from the entire line was that they nailed the classic Fender sounds, but with added flexibility and tone sculpting when you want it... and no matter what you do eq-wise (within reason) you never get too far away from "The Fender Sound"

So prefer this type of review....not reading or memorizing lines....great job....prob best reviewer vid ive seen on Fenders.
Everytime he swings that bass headstock near that jazz bazz, my butt clenches hard...
I know right, Dam he comes close 😅😮

And the Ultra Jazz Bass doesnt sound as versatile as the Ultra P-Bass
Sounds fantastic!
Do. A demo with flatwound strings
This Fender bass sounds good, it has a beefy tone. I like the American Ultra series.
12:26 sounds amazing
Great walkthrough, I'd love one of these basses!

Very nice.
I'm digging your review style! Good playing, good recording and in depth description of the instruments. Well done sir.
Awesome!!! Love this bass!!! I want one!!!
Yeah that sound like a P bass which ever pickup you use. These ultra p basses are the best sounding ones in a long time
Excellent review. Thanks 🙏
THANKS!! - Anthony
Nice job.Nice bass.
Nice1..Empire & thank u
The j bass pickup sounds awesome. !!!!
Got some sweet "Uptown Saturday Night" soundtrack bass tones in there!! Look up the movie!
Is there a huge difference in the neck compared to the ultra j?
I heard they feel exactly alike.
Pentatonic yes but nice 👍
Man great review cudos. Speaking from the ear, how it should be done.

@@TaylorWheeler sounds great. Thank you!
Can you roll off the tone on the P-Bass pickup while it's in passive mode??
Yes
Excellent review! Thank you:)!
You make the most helpful bass reviews on RUclips! I would like to know your signal chain just for reference. Rumble 100?

@@richardfittonperkins1926 how low is the string tension on that set? sounds like it would be kinda low

I got Rotosound 45-105 on my p ultra. This strings are so groove and very responsive at the same time . Must try!!

Man they really went all in for that old 60s yellow color wood. It used to be a bit less saturated looking. Not sure how i feel about it.
Are the frets sharp on the sides?
Enjoyed mate cheers, I have just bought identical bass, I just gotta learn to play properly now 👍😄
hi guy , nice review , great bass , wonderful color for pro & consumer
Thanks for watching!
Is this the Plasma Red Burst? It looks amazing!
Bassic Bach apparantly this colour is no longer listed on the fender website. I like it a lot
Do you guys still have this bass in stock? Would love to purchase it. Great review btw.
NIce demo!
Thx for the review! Just a question about the fretboard of the maple versions, is it polyester finish? Or satin?
satin
Love it! Great review 👍
Jazz ultra or Precision ultra?
Yes.
My money question is, can I get the sound of a vintage P Bass?
no, you can get every sound except that
I don’t like the compound radius on my Postmodern.
Your editor should consider muting your lav mic channel when you play.
Hearing Phaze every time you tap the bass. Mute the Lav when playing/demoing otherwise not true tone.
Hi Antony, This is Rodolfo from México. I want the bass of the video same color. Would you mind sharing me an e-mail? Br
Hi! Is the Elite and Ultra has thesame neck? specs?
Some of us DO want to hear the bass ocntrol turned up more or even all the way

i agree - i would love to see more views of the neck profile and the back. Its tough to get a feel for the profile of a modern d without seeing it
A 'D' flattens out? I've been writing D wrong my whole life.
Compared to a C, yes.
You are looking at the wrong side of the letter ‘D’ if you think it doesn’t flatten out!

Too many things I like a simple p bass
Too much clack in the sound instead of punch
