i think the moon being in a half-moon phase, where its not quite full and not quite gone reflects how the brothers are in the halfway phase of passing over - they're not quite alive but also not quite dead
The moon in the show was actually supposed to match the phase of the moon in the real world at the time of each episode's airing. www.imdb.com/title/tt3718778/trivia?item=tr3635340
Throughout the show, everything seems to be getting colder as time goes on. Even places like the mill were covered in snow at the end. This could be showing how hypothermia is setting in while they are in the river, or just that they are getting close to death.
Yes! It's hard to tell seasons in the first episode, but by Pottsfield we see that the series takes place mid-autumn around harvest season. We see signs throughout the series that we're progressing into winter (from more obvious stuff like the frogs going into hibernation in the mud to more subtle things like some of the song lyrics). By the last few episodes, we're mid-winter. The series was originally planned so that Wirt and Greg would return home around Christmas, with no one having known where they'd been in the last few months. I like the hypothermia explanation though, and winter definitely represents death in the series.
Donteatacowman wow, that's so fascinating!! I like the idea that they actually WERE in a "different world" for months (even though it's not realistic)!
ryan foundoulis damn dude , have you ever been almost drowned I have four 8 mins I was being choked under water BY MY OWN BROTHER yeah I'll never four get it
Out of a million things, I really loved how everyone at the party was happy to see Wirt. It's easy to think that everyone expects the worst from you when that's all you see in yourself.
#48 Greg doesn't eat all the food himself. He's feeding Fred the horse. You can see Greg opening and closing the window behind him (which leads to Fred's stable). Beatrice asks Fred is he's wearing lipstick, but it's just all the food Greg gave him around his lips.
I came to the comments looking for this. I think Gregg even said he was still hungry at the end (b/c it was shown Fred the horse was actually the one who was eating everything. And Jason Funderburker ate a bit judging by his little froggy belly.)
Maxmo yea is not a big difference in length but enough, another factor that plays is our limb favoritism. Like how I’m right handed I’m also right legged I’m more prone to use my leg more than my left again it’s a slight difference when compared to the hands but enough to creat a gradual drift
Oh, got one! Number 32.5: The Pumpkin-lady says "Aren't you a little early?" foreshadows how the Pumpkin-people are all skeletons, and both Wirt and Greg aren't dead yet, ergo "a little early" to join them.
When you said that the moon phase wasn't possible because of the angle it's at, I out of nowhere said "it is if you're sinking" and I screamed because *they were sinking*
Luma if you were in water and sinking down you would most likely be on your side (allowing them to maybe see the moon but from an incorrect angle) also the lack of oxygen could have made them see things in the real world differently
97: The unmarked gravestone belonged to Margueritte Grey! That's why her and Quincy's mansions were connected in the Unkown. They're cemetary neighbors! The symbol and writing on the unmarked tomb are accurate for the 1700s. The French Rococo style of Margueritte's mansion was also popular during that time.
I honest to God thought that cat was the beast in the end. Like the beast died quote quote, which is why the lantern is there. But because it was still lit, and the cat ended up popping up, the beast was still alive somewhere.
What blows my mind is that at 6:25 the audience was probably meant to misinterpret that dancing figure as the Woodsman's daughter indicating it was her soul in the lantern (which is what I originally thought seeing that scene), but if you look closely and pause when the figure is either facing the camera or has its back to it, you can faintly see The Beast's antlers! I'm honestly amazed that they were hinting at that final reveal this early into the show! That was a really well hidden secret and now that I've seen it I think I appreciate this show even more than I used to
Auntie whispers is large with huge, saucer like eyes because she eats the turtles that turned Beatrice's dog into a much larger creature with saucer like eyes
I don’t think that’s actually correct. I have an idea that a core theme through out the entire show is to try and mislead the audience to be scared of one thing when in reality they either shouldn’t be scared at all or should be scared of something else. Kind of symbolizing a fear of the UNKNOWN. Well we’re made to think that the turtles might actually have bad/evil beast like properties because the dog turns in some way into the beast when he eats it. However, if you look closely at the turtle that the dog spits up it has a black shell with black legs, tail, and head and has a piece of candy STUCK to it. The candy sticks to it because that turtle is covered in the black oil from the trees used to power the lantern. That candy is also the reason the dog eats the turtle in the first place as made clear by the fact that even when it’s a beast it still only cares for getting candy. The dog spits out the turtle, candy, aaand a little bit of black oil before it returns to normal. It’s foreshadowing the evil associated with the tree oil and the lantern in general. It also doubles as a set up to again try and mislead you through out the show to think back on the turtles and think of them as somehow related to the beast. Bbbbbut the difference is that every black turtle you see after that has a black shell but dark green legs, tail, and head!!! They make you think when you see the turtles in auntie whispers house and she eats them that she must be evil because you are suppose to think eating the turtles makes you evil. But they don’t and that’s why auntie whispers turns out not to be evil! This took me forever to figure out but I still don’t know if any one else noticed it haha
I also think is a slight reference to Yubaba from Spirited away. Both are big, have a large nose, really big eyes, they are witches, both have sisters and one of them is evil, while the other is not what it seems.
A highway man robs highways using horses. Fred the Horse probably belonged to the highway man in the bar and explains why he wants to steal everything in the next episode. Saw this in a video with his dance haha.
Bee With Legs definitely, that was one of the first things I noticed with this show, but honestly I never could pick out anything along the border of the title card
9:20 _"Wirt has a lot of bursts of insight that save the day"_ *THEORY* The ring you hear when Wirt realizes how dumb it would be to give the lantern back to the beast is actually Greg's wish coming true, making that particular moment not a true 'Wirt realization'.
i thought that he wished the beast would take him instead, but this is certainly an interesting thought. it definitely felt like a moment of divine intervention though.
I think the ringing symbolizes Wirts realization of the lesson that he learned from Beatrice about always doing what youre told, being a pushover without his own will. If not for her lesson, Wirt would probably make a deal with the beast, became a new woodsman and Greg would turn into a tree. It shows how important it is to have such friends who are not afraid to point out your weakneses.
Hey, look whose late to this party! I noticed something with the Queen of Cloud City and how she had birds flying around her and also had blue hair. This possibly could mean that she was suppose to represent Beatrice in Greg's vision. She also allows him a wish, which is what Greg thought he was getting from our good ol bird friend. :0
5:58 For Wirt’s weird lover’s song. Elijah Wood has the script but no melody, so he had to come up with it on the spot! The creator and Greg’s VA were yelling “Sing, lover, sing!” to try to make him as uncomfortable as possible too! (Source: I have the art book that mention cute little recording moments )
Was thinking today about how the unknown is partly defined as stories that have been forgotten and aren't told. So if Greg and Wirt had given into the edelwood, then in the "real world," they would have become one of those forgotten/untold stories. So those bad ending AUs where Wirt and Greg are found drowned are not actually accurate? The cop was the last person to see them alive. Presumably in a bad end, people would have looked for them AROUND the pond but wouldn't have found evidence. Their real stories would have been unknown. Maybe that was obvious but I'm only thinking about it in 2020 so 🤷 I also don't know where else to put these theories nowadays except the comments of my own RUclips video haha :(
Honestly, I’ve spent the last several minutes looking through the comments here about other peoples theories and feel like you could just make a whole new addendum video with these!
Great video! One last thing (and other people have probably noticed this before me) but in the end when everyone is in the hospital room, as the camera pans out, you can see Greg kinda shaking the frog around, and his stomach is glowing as he shakes him, implying that he still has the bell that he ate in his stomach (meaning the whole thing was real maybe? idk)
I don't think it could be real. It seems to me the unknown is kind of like a dream state that is basically shared by everyone. This explains Quincy's tombstone and him being in the story and even Beatrice. I think that Beatrice is actually from older times, and she made up a story about turning her family into Blue Birds and it just got put into the unknown. I feel like the frog with the bell in his stomach is just an Easter egg or something. Like a joke?
Well I thought the unknown was them visiting the past somehow and during then it was different, while all the people they met are now dead and that's why you can see Quincy's grave... but that's just a theory, a game... oh wait
Yes!! It's also (as we find out on the For Sara cassette adelwood.tumblr.com/post/130034191141/wirts-poetry-from-for-sara) a common theme in Wirt's poetry. :) Some of his phrases in the show ("endless black sea," "an indifferent wind") are quotes from the poems he recorded for Sara.
I LOVED this show. At the beginning, the way Wert talked and dressed made me think they were from that time period. But when they showed the flashback of them on halloween, I gasped so loud. At all clicked
In Pottsfield the giant pumpkin is called Enoch which is a biblical name and the story behind Enoch has to deal with death and how "he knows not death" which is funny because he looks over reanimated bones.
The "giant pumpkin" Enoch isn't a real pumpkin either, but a maypole being puppeteered by the black cat we see at the beginning of the series (bringing his cart of pumpkins to Potsfield) and at the end of the series (emerging from his costume)
11:52 the woodsman advises Greg to "give the frog a proper name" in the first episode. I think it has something to do with the superstition that if you have a animal or blade while travelling through the woods, you better give it a name lest it decides to turn against you
U FORGOT ONE! u can see when they got home and all of their friends were still wearing their halloween costumes means in the Unknown time passes differently there.
Ian Flint The woodsman and daughter are in the Unknown. She probably went missing ages ago in the Unknown and slightly less in the real world. She didn't go missing at the start of OTGW, I would say she was already gone a while. Hope this helps :)
The closeups of leaves shown throughout the episodes are symbolism for whatever is happening in Wirt and Greg's journey at the moment. Leaves are also repeatedly mentioned as well, for example "we are but wayward leaves . . ." etc. said by Wirt. The song at the end also mentions all the important bits of the show "One are the birds, two are the trees, the is the wind in the leaves."
Another thing I noticed was that, at the beginning the woodsman has an abundance of oil, but after a few choice encounters with Wirt, a lot of it is destroyed or burned. This creates the desperation for it near the end
A lot of this stuff wasn't deliberately hidden, but it takes some rewatching to notice it! Just because there's so much detail and thought packed in the series.
Also in reference to Wirt's shoe being untied for an entire episode, apparently according to the book 10,000 Dreams and Traditional Meanings by Edwin Raphael, untied shoes denote loss, personal conflict, and ill health.
the moon remains a half moon throughout the whole series, despite the passage of several days in the Unknown. the half moon represents transition, making the Unknown a place of "crossing over" from life to death. the Unknown is highly implied to be a sort of purgatory or limbo several times. pottsfield is pretty much the place of resting, where all it's residents are skeletons who only come out during what looks to be the harvest to celebrate like they were alive. wirt being referred to as a "pilgrim" implies that he is journeying into a place where he feels accepted, which fits his personality.
This is true! I tend to think of it as a reference by the background painter (kind of like how the OTGW comics have an Adventure Zone reference on a poster) since the rest of the setting implies 70s-early 80s. But you're definitely right about that cassette.
@@Donteatacowman ironically, the 70s and 90s were pretty similar aesthetically. I remember having HUGE bell bottom jeans and a flight jacket. And my grandma still had ugly 70s wallpaper and wooden walls. 😂 She also STILL (like, as of this year) has those same exact mushroom jars. And I remember a lot of people still drove those boxy looking cars. Plus you had cassette tapes, wall phones, and such still being a big thing.
@@Orion_TheyThem yes! I was going to say this 😄 It's because a lot of 70s kids became nostalgic about the 70s during the 90s, similarly to how 80s and 90s kids are nostalgic about the 80s and 90s today and so a lot of the fashion and vintage memorabilia are popular again 🙂
I hadn't noticed that, but just going by the choice in clothes and the speech patterns of the kids, I presumed the 90s. The police car is late 1980s, the Paramedic Ambulance is early 1990s, and Sarah makes a comment about not having a cassette player not in a way as if they are common, but genuinely outdated.
@@the-dullahan cassette tapes were not outdated at all in the early ‘90s. Sure, cd’s existed, but they weren’t immediately completely dominant over tapes. That transition took almost a decade - from the mid-late ‘80s to the mid-late ‘90s - during which time tapes were still widely used. I grew up right during this period, and people were still making mix tapes in the mid-late ‘90s. The transition was slow because people didn’t want to re-buy their favorite albums just because a new format was becoming dominant. For years, new cars had both tape and cd players, and for older cars that didn’t want to upgrade there were adapters you could use to play cds in a car tape player using a discman’s headphone jack
I think that they are both ghost from the past, Wirt and Greg are clearly from the late 60s and or the 70s, and if you look at the fashion everyone else is wearing - they are not from the same timeline as the boys. Maybe the boys somehow timetraveled or went to some type of place where ghosts with undone buissnes is placed?
everyone who Wirt and Greg met are dead, even the woodsman, the woodsman though was in denial about his demise as he was trying to save his daughter unaware that she was dead and I think the unknown was the land of the dead and Wirt and Greg were in a kind of purgatory but in between life and death
I actually noticed Beatrice saying the thing about “wash my hands” and “let’s keep walking” when I originally watched the series in 2014, and predicted that she used to be human.
9:56 i personally thought that it was obvious what the story behind the outhouse was. it's the bathroom shrek comes out of in the beginning of all star
During the tavern scene the Greg is actually feeding Fred the horse. This explains Beatrice asking him "are you wearing lipstick?" It's also shown better in the deleted scenes
Super late to the game.... but an interesting fact about those bird scissors Adelaide is holding is that the bird is actually a stork and they were originally used by midwives to clamp umbilical cords and then became modified for embroidering, which midwives apparently did a lot while waiting for babies to come.
Something that got easily in my head for such a long time, is that at some particular time in the series, Wirt said he was angry at Greg and at his ''stupid father'' meaning that they are half-brothers somehow. I got myself into what really happened to his father and how Wirt felt it or if this could be a reason of why he started writing poems and being so depressed
109: I wonder if the frog wearing the top hat is a reference to the classic Chuck Jones cartoon "One Froggy Evening", about a song-and-dance frog who only performs for one man, who no-one else believes.
When I was little I kept seeing this show being announced on TV and I always thought how weird the fact that it's so short and only comes back during a specific time and not like usual cartoons that have multiple episodes rolling daily Now that I've gotten older I realized this is a piece of art it has so much hidden meanings and the overall style of animation and small details you don't pay much attention to at first play such an important role in making this small series a fucking masterpiece Now I wanna rewatch it and just enjoy every second of it
I don't think Greg and Wirt being hearing distance from the mill in the final episode is necessarily evidence of the boys having walked in circles for the entire series. It makes more sense to think that Wirt and Beatrice were actively looking for the Beast and Greg, and found them by the mill. It'd make sense for the Beast to never be too far from the mill, since that's where the woodsman, and therefore the lantern, his soul, lives
2:17 If I'm not mistaken, that thing Greg's swinging around is a bed warmer. You take some embers from the fire (or, as doctors often recommended, hot _sand,_ to avoid the fumes), and then stuff the hot pan under the covers so all your blankets will be warm by bedtime.
I'm a little late, hope you'll read. At the end scene, in the hosptial, there's an evidence the Unknown is real and not just some kind of dream : Greg shakes the frog, and it makes it glow because of the bell!
You've already mentioned there were a ton of references in this show! One of them is that Chapter 3's "School Follies" was based off The Little Rascals episode "Bear Shooters," where a man dresses up like a gorilla trying to scare the children during a camping trip.
I took the "age appropriate drinks" line to be a satirical nod to censorship of animation and content policy within family animation, especially within an organisation like Cartoon Network - no doubt the creators had all sorts of decisions about what to, and what not to include, in this story, and the level of threat they could "get away with" (which it turns out is A LOT haha). We might wonder as viewers, if, as they are coming into adult hood, further down the line, they might one day transgressively and illegally experiment with adult drinks, but they could never show this, hence the joke. We're sort of in on what life choices may or may not be ahead for them.
Im pretty sure that the woodsman says "This creature, which is known as..." before he is knocked out. This is supported by the fact that in the credits the actor for the "creature" is credited, however his movie name is just ???. A subtle nod that the woodsman never got to finish his sentence and explain maybe
For some reason I always find the brothers rolling down the hill and falling into the river after jumping away from the train really unsettling and disturbing. Those aren't the right words to describe it but it just never sits right with me.
I’m pretty sure that the angel cloud lady in Greg’s dream was actually the Beast. After Greg gives “her” his wish, wakes up, and walks off with the Beast, the Beast says something along the lines of “we have a deal, don’t we?” The “deal” being the wish that Greg asked the lady for in his dream. Not sure if that was simply a given or not.
Idk if anyone has already said it but when you see Quincy Endercotts grave (sorry if I spelt that wrong) the second grave with no name is Fred's, cuz you see Margeruite looking at Quincy and Fred in a painting (like they passed away) so maybe the unknown grave is Fred's
given the time of the show, if Quincy was a veteran, it wouldn't be uncommon to bury the horse he rode next to him, but with no give proof of Quincy serving, it might have been by request that his best carrier horse, as we see Fred taking the job to carry barrels, to be buried there.
it didn't seem like they passed away, she clearly seemed happy looking at them. I think it was simply an indication of how all three of them became happier thanks to the protagonists.
This is without a doubt the most chilling show I've ever seen and that's because of how innocent it may seem on the surface. However, looking deeper into it it is really dark
another one: wirt is holding the bassoon the wrong way. source: been playing bassoon for two years edit: also his wrists should be breaking with no neck/seat strap. that bassooning IS bad.
Additional things: Adelaide has wallpaper with 3 female figures, insinuating a third sister. The duck mask person seen at the party staring at the camera is doing the same thing in the hospital while Greg is dancing with the frog
Enoch (the giant pumpkin) is potentially the black cat seen in pottsfield, in the episode the black cat is seen at the festival, but it cuts away from him and about a minute later the pumpkin begins to move and speak, the next time the cat is shown is at the end and it pops out of the top of the pumpkin, the pumpkin also doesn't seem to be organic unlike the other costumes, it looks to be made out of mostly paper and similar textured things Nvm she mentions this in the second episode I didn't realize existed
One that I feel some people miss is that Enoch is not a pumpkin, but a giant maypole, being puppeteered from inside. We actually see the puppeteer at the very beginning and very end of the show. He is the black cat we see driving a cart full of pumpkins to Potsfield and at the end of the show, we see him emerge from his maypole puppet again. Additionally, the cart is pulled by Turkeys, because it is e timely based on a 19th century greetings card depicting a black cat driving a turkey cart of pumpkins. A common theme in the show, which is featured elsewhere, such as the pumpkin fellow driving his watermelon car, which is also taken directly from a vintage greetings card.
In the song of the dark lantern where we first see the beast and his relationship with the woodsman, the beast laughs and starts singing "lalalala, chop the wood to light the fire!" in what sounds like the woodsman's voice MEANING that ever since the very beginning the beast has been the one singing and stalking the woodsman, as he is said to do throughout the show by the woodsman and the tavern folk.
I know this was 3 years ago but, I paused the show perfectly when the woodsman shone the lantern at the beast, and he was covered in faces that looked like they were mourning and sad. He also looked made of addle wood
That's the one big mystery of the show that I have no hint or answer for. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good characters are seen abusing the turtles. Auntie Whispers eats turtles and is OK (though mangling it in the process and not eating the shell), but the dog swallowed a turtle whole and turned into a monster because of it. The turtles show up in the comics a lot too but it doesn't give us much of a clue as to why.
I think the turtles were supposed to be red herrings meant to distract the audience, and make the truth more surprising. We assume Auntie Whispers is evil because she eats the turtles, when we're meant to believe that the turtle made the dog evil. It adds to the feeling that you can't assume anything to be true in the unknown. It's representative of the paranoia the main characters are feeling in the unknown, and how farfetched assumptions can lead to undue fear. It's essentially Chapter two, but with the audience being the ones to overreact, and freak out.
The Beast has very colorful, spiral-like eyes before he perishes, just like the eyes of the giant wolf who almost killed Greg and Wirt at the beginning of the series.
My theory on the show is that while Greg and Wirt were in the water and drowning, their souls travelled to a sort of in-between of life and death, and all the places they traveled to was actually their town in different periods of time.
I think the fact that the toy is a "bilbo catcher" is hilarious due to the fact that Wirt is voice acted by Elijah Wood, actor of Frodo Baggins... nephew of Bilbo Baggins
In the scene where Wurt is with all of Beatrice's family. One of Beatrice's family begs wurt to stay and wait till the storm dies down she says " At least wait till the storm dies down you'll be no good to your brother dead" Wurt replies with " I was no good to him alive either" This confirms that theyre in some sort of purgatory/limbo.
In one episode Beatrice comments on how Wirt always does what he is told, during the duration of this episode Wirt walks about with his shoe untied until Beatrice commands him to tie it in the episode's final scenes. When Wirt tells Beatrice's family "no" to their request for him to wait out the storm, it is an example of his character arc. He now acts independently despite whether or not someone else tells him to do otherwise.. this new found independence is also shown in the final episode during his confrontation with the beast. The beast tells him his brother cannot leave, then offers him the lantern. Wirt instinctively begins to do as he is told, but then we see the change in personality once more. After considering for a moment he denies the Beasts request. Even as the beast tries to convince him other wise, he holds on to his new found confidence, and stands firm in his decision. This is the purpose of the comment made to Beatrice's mother, or rather why it was written in the story, to showcase Wirt's change in character. The comment he made in regards to how he was never much good to his brother, helps to show that he is aware of his past mistakes thus giving the proper foundation for a change in character.. as one cannot fix one's problems until one is aware and accepting one has problems. Previously when Beatrice had teased him about being too obedient, he was in denial of it, now he seems aware and in acceptance of this amongst other issues, and ready to face them for his brother. This comment is also made I'm sure as an attempt to retract/discredit his precious comments about how Greg is always messing up and that he and his dad are the crux of Wirt's problems... character arc!
He may simply have been admitting that his fear and hesitance had let him and Greg down. Notice how bold he gets with the Beast, and how he decisively picks up Greg and the frog, and eventually plucks up the courage to invite Sarah to his house to listen to that tape. His character's beginning to change.
"Hee lyes y body of" Gods, I love this show!! The letter "y" in older versions o English is actually meant to represent the "th" sound. So, when people say, "Ye Old" they should be saying "The Old", which they took into consideration!!! Linguistics is a really fun field of study. I do wish the person had continued the inscription . . . though in all honesty it's rather possible for it to be Marguerite Grey or someone from the Pottsfield era.
It's actually pretty much the same as the original lyrics of the English version. A little rough, but not terrible or indecipherable by any means. Edit: Also, I am a Latin student in case you were wondering.
When they run out of the tavern you can hear someone repeating “Never say die! Never say die!” Pretty creepy and I think it also alludes to Wirt and Greg being on the cusp of death.
McLaughlin also means "son/child of Lachlann" in Irish, Lachlann being a medieval Irish term to depict a faraway place such as the Otherworld--the realm of spirits. I'm guessing the creators intended it to be a double entendre, considering the ferryboat (again a metaphor to Charon ferrying the dead) is literally spiriting them through the Unknown.
One of my favorite parts of this series is the tavern keeper's song about the beast. She not only says he seeks lost souls, and that he turns them into the edelwood trees, but that it's HIS lantern to burn. Like the woodsman said in the first episode, everyone has one to burn. She also says he who holds the lantern must be the beast, which kind of reveals that his soul is the one in the lantern which is why she would think whoever holds it must be the beast because why would he want someone else to carry his soul.
I've heard of stories where people have been unconscious for only a day or 2 but in this world their mind created they've spent like 6 months in their mind's own little world. I feel like the same has happened here for the brother except they've been in the water for maybe a minute and in "The Unknown" it's as if they've spent a couple days there.
Not only is the frog wearing Sarah's hat at the end, he also has socks on! Greg mentions while on the ferry that the frog needs socks, and once the frog becomes popular through singing, he is gifted a pair of socks by the boat patrons. But since he decided to follow Greg, he loses those socks and only gets a new pair once the boys wake up.
A detail in #87 that could also support your #91 point is Wirt's pillowcase. The print on the pillowcase seems to be a parody of Star Wars. Star Wars first came out in the 70s.
because of Wirt's intrest in interior design, he was able to tell the difference between Endicott's mansion and the lady's mansion apart.
it just wasnt in line with endicott's Georgian sensibilities
When you’re an a Georgian but suddenly everything is French rococo
I love these replies 😂

i think the moon being in a half-moon phase, where its not quite full and not quite gone reflects how the brothers are in the halfway phase of passing over - they're not quite alive but also not quite dead
mitjo Yeah, the Unknown is like a sort of limbo, where The Beast is constantly watching and chasing, and no real time passes.
It also could look like that if you were underwater and drowning.
The moon was exactly the same before they fell in the lake.
The moon in the show was actually supposed to match the phase of the moon in the real world at the time of each episode's airing. www.imdb.com/title/tt3718778/trivia?item=tr3635340
That’s probably one of the reasons why they are in such bad condition and have to be rushed to the hospital when they find their way out!
I like the hypothermia explanation though, and winter definitely represents death in the series.
well its because of the seasons but okay
Donteatacowman wow, that's so fascinating!! I like the idea that they actually WERE in a "different world" for months (even though it's not realistic)!
wow, i really with that had happened (the midwinter return)!

Out of a million things, I really loved how everyone at the party was happy to see Wirt. It's easy to think that everyone expects the worst from you when that's all you see in yourself.
Just showing he was overthinking it
I loved it but it really broke my heart aswell, that poor kid doesn't know how much people enjoy his company
#48 Greg doesn't eat all the food himself. He's feeding Fred the horse. You can see Greg opening and closing the window behind him (which leads to Fred's stable). Beatrice asks Fred is he's wearing lipstick, but it's just all the food Greg gave him around his lips.
Scrolled all the way down looking for this.
I came to the comments looking for this. I think Gregg even said he was still hungry at the end (b/c it was shown Fred the horse was actually the one who was eating everything. And Jason Funderburker ate a bit judging by his little froggy belly.)
i always thought it was blood on his lips 😔
I always did wonder why/what fred was chewing at that part. It makes so much sense now
Yes, and in the deleted scene when Beatrice presses Fred on why he didn’t talk to her, he says it’s because he was eating all the food Greg gave him.
You know, the Beast’s Lantern looks eerily similar to the light from the train that almost hits Wirt and Greg
I never noticed that!
omg
originally they were going to be riding that train and the beast was going to be the conductor lol
Another Rock fact: the Beast's lantern is based on a train lantern.

97: The unmarked gravestone belonged to Margueritte Grey! That's why her and Quincy's mansions were connected in the Unkown. They're cemetary neighbors! The symbol and writing on the unmarked tomb are accurate for the 1700s. The French Rococo style of Margueritte's mansion was also popular during that time.
maybe the lantern ends up in pottsfield cause the beast dies in the end, since everyone in pottsfield is already dead
The light in the lantern is still lit tho, maybe he’ll come back somehow
@@Seba12322 is the show coming back tho?
KHswag 36 wow I thought I was the only one left on this video
Or the woodsman
That was a really well hidden secret and now that I've seen it I think I appreciate this show even more than I used to
She said that lol
Auntie whispers is large with huge, saucer like eyes because she eats the turtles that turned Beatrice's dog into a much larger creature with saucer like eyes
Michael H. how did i not notice that
I don’t think that’s actually correct.
John Dallas ohh so not all the turtles had oil on them?? i never noticed that
I also think is a slight reference to Yubaba from Spirited away.
Both are big, have a large nose, really big eyes, they are witches, both have sisters and one of them is evil, while the other is not what it seems.
that's what I spotted as well! :3
A highway man robs highways using horses. Fred the Horse probably belonged to the highway man in the bar and explains why he wants to steal everything in the next episode.

9:20 _"Wirt has a lot of bursts of insight that save the day"_
*THEORY*
The ring you hear when Wirt realizes how dumb it would be to give the lantern back to the beast is actually Greg's wish coming true, making that particular moment not a true 'Wirt realization'.
So do you think Greg wished that Wirt would be able to save the day? Or something like that? I've always wondered what Greg's wish was
Seven Zero Seven his wish was to talk to the beast himself I always assumed.
i thought that he wished the beast would take him instead, but this is certainly an interesting thought. it definitely felt like a moment of divine intervention though.
@@alviepines7708 Since he was talking a lot about being a leader in that episode, I think maybe he wished to be able to lead Wirt home.
Yes the violin is upside down, but what about the flute being played completely wrong? 😂
The flute was actually repositioned by one of the characters and they just kept playing it
As a flute player, I honestly noticed that before I noticed the violin
The horse is also upside down on the sign outside.
@@tobe2btobe That's a good connection
Hey, look whose late to this party!
I noticed something with the Queen of Cloud City and how she had birds flying around her and also had blue hair. This possibly could mean that she was suppose to represent Beatrice in Greg's vision. 5:58 For Wirt’s weird lover’s song. Elijah Wood has the script but no melody, so he had to come up with it on the spot! @@Zilkenian_Davenport It was those hobbit genes kicking in. Can't resist a decent tune
Maybe that was obvious but I'm only thinking about it in 2020 so 🤷
I also don't know where else to put these theories nowadays except the comments of my own RUclips video haha :(
They'd just be an old ghost story told by the kids of the neighborhood...
Honestly, I’ve spent the last several minutes looking through the comments here about other peoples theories and feel like you could just make a whole new addendum video with these!
Great video! One last thing (and other people have probably noticed this before me) but in the end when everyone is in the hospital room, as the camera pans out, you can see Greg kinda shaking the frog around, and his stomach is glowing as he shakes him, implying that he still has the bell that he ate in his stomach (meaning the whole thing was real maybe? idk)
animepinetree Yea I noticed this too! Leads me to think the writers thought to keep it as a mystery whether it was all real or not
That scene also shows an odd duck guy standing apart from everyone else. He is literally far away from them, just standing there
I don't think it could be real.
It is real, the unknow is a Limbo
Well I thought the unknown was them visiting the past somehow and during then it was different, while all the people they met are now dead and that's why you can see Quincy's grave... but that's just a theory, a game... oh wait
Another one is that the show starts right in the middle of the action, because in real life, we don’t remember the beginning of our dreams
Here's one i've noticed: In episode one, Wirt"s poem about being a ship lost at sea is brought up again at episode 7 when he and Lorna get a duet.
What about when Greg and Wirt were on a boat at the beginning on one of the episode?
ohhhhhhh my god i had no idea there was a real tape this has given me new life i watched this show in 2015 and now i find out there was a real tape
The word "Vessel" is pretty commonly used to describe a soul traveling in a human body

All this time he was waiting for his brother to name his frog...THIS HURT ME RIGHT IN THE FEELS 😭😭😭
the 'Babes in the wood' part and the fact that Greg was so hungry he tried to eat leaf made me sad :(
I LOVED this show.
Marisky Suerto TRUE
I thought everyone saw that. That's basically what happened with TRON Legacy.
think we all noticed
So how long could the woodsman be there if he was away long enough for his daughter to MISS him?
I always wondered why it zoomed in on the leaf at the end of that one episode and played that weird music
@@MartinBielkovic the leaf was stuck, the same as they are
Another thing I noticed was that, at the beginning the woodsman has an abundance of oil, but after a few choice encounters with Wirt, a lot of it is destroyed or burned. This creates the desperation for it near the end
Yes, of course. I don't think this was supposed to be hidden.
A lot of this stuff wasn't deliberately hidden, but it takes some rewatching to notice it! Just because there's so much detail and thought packed in the series.
I didn't mean it like that, I mean that what Little Space Case said, and a lot of this video, was glaringly obvious stuff or even central plot points.
One great line upon a second viewing is in the first episode where Greg assures Wirt that "an elephant never forgets."
It's not the 70s but the 90s, Wirt has a Three Non-Blondes album in his room.
I was going to say this 😄
It's because a lot of 70s kids became nostalgic about the 70s during the 90s, similarly to how 80s and 90s kids are nostalgic about the 80s and 90s today and so a lot of the fashion and vintage memorabilia are popular again 🙂
Also since Endicott is the name on the gravestone, he is actually the ghost and not the woman in the portrait, who thought Endicott was the ghost.
Da Dragon Durp i think they are both pretty dead
I think that they are both ghost from the past, Wirt and Greg are clearly from the late 60s and or the 70s, and if you look at the fashion everyone else is wearing - they are not from the same timeline as the boys. Maybe the boys somehow timetraveled or went to some type of place where ghosts with undone buissnes is placed?
Nah i think the unknown is a dimension where the decision of death or life is chosen and the beast is death
everyone who Wirt and Greg met are dead, even the woodsman, the woodsman though was in denial about his demise as he was trying to save his daughter unaware that she was dead and I think the unknown was the land of the dead and Wirt and Greg were in a kind of purgatory but in between life and death
So what of Beatrice and her family? Are they dead too?
I actually noticed Beatrice saying the thing about “wash my hands” and “let’s keep walking” when I originally watched the series in 2014, and predicted that she used to be human.

During the tavern scene the Greg is actually feeding Fred the horse. This explains Beatrice asking him "are you wearing lipstick?" It's also shown better in the deleted scenes
PaladinAtWar I knew Fred had gotten fed by Greg but I didn't put two and two together! Guess Greg didn't inhale 15 meals after all 8(

the horse is implied to be owned by the Highway man and we already know later that he is a Kleptomaniac so Fred most likely steals the food

Super late to the game.... but an interesting fact about those bird scissors Adelaide is holding is that the bird is actually a stork and they were originally used by midwives to clamp umbilical cords and then became modified for embroidering, which midwives apparently did a lot while waiting for babies to come.
"The triumphant sound of full frontal nudity!"
Laughed so hard at that
I came here to post this ☝🏼
Just like those times in art school-
the implication that they're going in a circle feels like a representation of how their quest home kind of follows the hero's journey cycle
He clearly states that his mother married another guy and had Greg with him, that's not a finding
well divorce and all that kind of shit can make any kid depressed.
109: I wonder if the frog wearing the top hat is a reference to the classic Chuck Jones cartoon "One Froggy Evening", about a song-and-dance frog who only performs for one man, who no-one else believes.
I've seen this series seven or eight times and I still didn't know all of these. The attention to detail and continuity in this show is breathtaking.
When I was little I kept seeing this show being announced on TV and I always thought how weird the fact that it's so short and only comes back during a specific time and not like usual cartoons that have multiple episodes rolling daily
Now that I've gotten older I realized this is a piece of art it has so much hidden meanings and the overall style of animation and small details you don't pay much attention to at first play such an important role in making this small series a fucking masterpiece
Now I wanna rewatch it and just enjoy every second of it
6:22 I thought his lower body is some sort of a tree trunk and I was laughing at his skinny legs, that only make him less scarier XD
They could've made him all wearing a cloak
In my opinion, it made him more scarier
The woodsman should feel stupid knowing all he had to do to win that fight was sweep-kick his little stick legs lol
It's true. I did have a feather. But alas. It is gone.

Holy shit! I re!ember that! Thats why that episode is so familiar!
Lorna was reading the tome of the unknown in the final outro, from the pilot.
"Everyone comes to pottsfield eventually" Even the beast ended up there in the lantern
Im pretty sure that the woodsman says "This creature, which is known as..." before he is knocked out. This is supported by the fact that in the credits the actor for the "creature" is credited, however his movie name is just ???. A subtle nod that the woodsman never got to finish his sentence and explain maybe
I'm pretty sure the ??? was for the frog because he has no name yet.
Still no one points out how Wirt doesn't eat anything throughout the series in spite of the number of times he could have
Makes me want to watch the series again, it's really captivating.
For some reason I always find the brothers rolling down the hill and falling into the river after jumping away from the train really unsettling and disturbing. Those aren't the right words to describe it but it just never sits right with me.
Wirt's war cloak grows when Jason Funderburker is on top of his head when their on the boat.
Why would they bury a horse in a human graveyard?
Because, He was a talking horse?
given the time of the show, if Quincy was a veteran, it wouldn't be uncommon to bury the horse he rode next to him, but with no give proof of Quincy serving, it might have been by request that his best carrier horse, as we see Fred taking the job to carry barrels, to be buried there.
it didn't seem like they passed away, she clearly seemed happy looking at them. I think it was simply an indication of how all three of them became happier thanks to the protagonists.
This is without a doubt the most chilling show I've ever seen and that's because of how innocent it may seem on the surface. However, looking deeper into it it is really dark
another one: wirt is holding the bassoon the wrong way. source: been playing bassoon for two years
edit: also his wrists should be breaking with no neck/seat strap. that bassooning IS bad.
He's a clarinet player. What do you expect?
I'm genuinely surprised he can make any decent sounds at all.
I love when that pumpkin lady tells Wirt “Aren’t you a little… early?” Which is such a great detail that they are skeletons!
I didn't even know half of these! You have great observation and your commentary/voice is very nice :0
Thank you so much!
Additional things: Adelaide has wallpaper with 3 female figures, insinuating a third sister. The duck mask person seen at the party staring at the camera is doing the same thing in the hospital while Greg is dancing with the frog
Enoch (the giant pumpkin) is potentially the black cat seen in pottsfield, in the episode the black cat is seen at the festival, but it cuts away from him and about a minute later the pumpkin begins to move and speak, the next time the cat is shown is at the end and it pops out of the top of the pumpkin, the pumpkin also doesn't seem to be organic unlike the other costumes, it looks to be made out of mostly paper and similar textured things
Nvm she mentions this in the second episode I didn't realize existed
I'm pretty sure the "welcome to cloud city" bit the animals do at the beginning of the sequence is direct reference to the Wizard of Oz?
it's actually frame by frame a direct reference to Disney's earlier Alice in Wonderland from 1923
There's a city in one of the last circles of hell un Dante's inferno, maybe it has something yo do with that?
In the song of the dark lantern where we first see the beast and his relationship with the woodsman, the beast laughs and starts singing "lalalala, chop the wood to light the fire!" in what sounds like the woodsman's voice MEANING that ever since the very beginning the beast has been the one singing and stalking the woodsman, as he is said to do throughout the show by the woodsman and the tavern folk.
after watching the series over a dozen times, I thought I caught all of these, but I didn't notice quite a few of these!! well done!
I know this was 3 years ago but, I paused the show perfectly when the woodsman shone the lantern at the beast, and he was covered in faces that looked like they were mourning and sad. He also looked made of addle wood
Ok but /what do the black turtles mean/?! They show up way too often to be a coincidence!
I think the turtles are used by the beast to stalk the boys
@@mavioli3303 Thats a good theory, I've heard people say that the turtles might be the Beast's spies or minions
they look like oil, so I assume pieces of the beast?
The Beast has very colorful, spiral-like eyes before he perishes, just like the eyes of the giant wolf who almost killed Greg and Wirt at the beginning of the series.
My theory on the show is that while Greg and Wirt were in the water and drowning, their souls travelled to a sort of in-between of life and death, and all the places they traveled to was actually their town in different periods of time.
I like that theory!
Except for the town throughout time thing, that's not a theory, that's the plot
@@sethwell2552Well yeah, he mentioned the fact first and then his related theory. You say it as if he said something obvious
No, thats not true.
JuicyOgilvie It's Wirt's character arc! :D
Or maybe he just has depression issues. I'm voting on the depression and the feeling of uslessness.
How often they reference "the beast" keeps reminding me of The Lord of the Flies
"Hee lyes y body of"
Gods, I love this show!!
HECK YES old english knowledge!!!!
"Potatus et Molassus", the latin version of Potatoes and Molasses is hilarious XD
Another example of it hinting at being placed in the 90s is the clear plot point of the VHS
"As with most things in this series, [it's] probably about death" not really something you expect to hear about a kids show on Cartoon Network
Lach also means… lake 😮
I love how detailed this series is, truly an animation gem!!
But since he decided to follow Greg, he loses those socks and only gets a new pair once the boys wake up.
i have the little bird scissors!
I love that you called the schoolhouse "Like a TARDIS" because I love this show but I also love Doctor who. '' Its bigger on the inside!''
when they first encounter the woodsman he's singing come wayward souls (sorry for bad english)
Your English is fine! I can't understand what he's singing there. :O
If you're a guitarist, I recognize that old musiciswin joke.
A detail in #87 that could also support your #91 point is Wirt's pillowcase. The print on the pillowcase seems to be a parody of Star Wars. Star Wars first came out in the 70s.
