- Monsters are not easy to create, and in a system as complex as Pathfinder 2e, there's a lot to keep track of. Luckily, there are plenty of tools out there to make the process as streamlined as possible! Let's make a monster together right here to show you what my process looks like!
DON'T FORGET TO SUBMIT A MONSTER TO THE RPGSUPERSTAR CONTEST!! THE DEADLING IS DECEMBER 7TH!! THE CLOCK IS TICKING!!!

"It's not going to be creating any elaborate traps. It's a spider."
Literally every species of spider on the planet: "Am I a joke to you?"
How dare they not respect my little spooder babies like that 😡
I physically can't resist letting you know to look out for several cases to use the possessive "its" rather than "it's," say "it is" when you read it and see if it makes sense. I really loved the video, your interviews were on my other screen while making my own entries!
I’d lower the accuracy of its fang strike. Its already heavily incentivized to only attack flat footed targets, especially those with low ACs. Giving it such a high to-hit bonus is just basically saying “fuck you, Wizard, I’m going to crit you every round.” For half their HP too; a max damage crit from this thing will deal 74 damage. A level 12 Wizard gets 74 HP from their class hit-die. Who needs that venom when you can just drive-by the same person twice?
Oh, and regardless of that, you should give the spooder finesse on its fangs attack. That way making it clumsy or otherwise affecting its DEX messes with its to-hit; it doesn’t currently. In order to mess with its hit chance currently you’d have to make it enfeebled or mess with its STR, and that isn’t intuitive with how you’ve described the beast.
Awesome creature! Only issue I had with it is that you made it with the intention of summoning, and then went off course and made its primary thing a 3 action activity lol. I think I would just make ambush 2 moves for 2 actions, with the option of using a 3rd action to increase the movement. Also I think the hide thing would be better to rip from a feat I think rogue can get? If it starts its turn hidden and ends behind cover, it can hide for free. All in all, the creature is dope, but those are the little tweaks I might make
Hey Nonat!
Just so you know, "it's" is a conjugation of "it" and "is." The correct word to use in the creature's description is "its" - ie, "it hunts its prey"
Cheetah Spider. Players will be sure to call it "Cheating Spider." Love it.
Proofread tip @Nonat: you used "it's" (it is) in the creature description several times when you should have used its (his/her/its).
Note on uncommon rarity: I don't recall off the top of my head if the rules straight *forbid* summoning uncommon creatures, but it at least strongly recommends not allowing it. Since your goal is to provide another summonable animal (it's much needed, like you said), for this reason alone, I would change it officially to common. You can make clear in the description that adventurers rarely experience them (after all, how big does its prey need to be to sustain it?), but they're known enough that a high level animal summoner has no problem summoning them.
And two things to mention about the contest: the theme this year is strange and unusual creatures, and entries must be between 500 and 600 words (so Nonat will have to expand his description, add some abilities, or both).
(If you read this huge long comment, what's wrong with you? What's wrong with me??)
Something to pad the word-count and round out the spider - maybe it needs a super-leap ability or a mid-air tackle; right now it'll have to be extra-clever against flying creatures (which lvl13 parties might be). It can jump at them from trees, but this forces it to rely on its lower climbing speed. Including Leap as an alternative to Stride as part of Swift Injection might do the trick, although I'm not clear as to when a Strike can occur during a jump.
It's not really the Cheetah Spider's niche-the way Nonat described it, it sounds more like a sprinting ground spider-but I'm now imagining one of those tiny, adorable, cuddly, big-eyed, fuzzy-legged jumping spiders... except it's Medium, lvl13 and dissolves a person's insides in less than a minute.
Yeah I hate the apostrophe "s" stuff, we get it pounded into our heads that it's possessive but there are SO MANY times when it's not! Very similar to the whole "I before E except after C", there are a LOT of exceptions to something that they call a "RULE" in the English language! I hate my Mother tongue, it's overly complicated!
Great video! Btw, you can use % as a name placeholder, the tool automatically inserts the name instead. Great for when you can't decide and change it five times in a session
Oooh another note, I'd definitely give all animals some form of intimidation. Animals don't want to fight, it's life threatening, a scratch, bruise, broken bone, chipped tooth can lead to death in the wild, even if they would win. Especially predators try to scare each other. Puffing up their hair, spiders raise their front legs and show off their fangs, snakes hiss or rattle, showing your teeth in general is a big intimidating tactic.
Early into this video, before you've made any specific decisions about what this thing is and I'm imagining a medium sized cat-like ambush predator, which has led to me imagining a creature that follows a party throughout an adventure through some jungle choked ruins, often jumping in to strike once or twice as they're dealing with a trap, or some other creatures in combat, only to leave to lick it's wounds and wait for another chance as soon as someone fights back. Maybe the party gets a lucky hit or debuff on it to prevent it from leaving, or maybe they eventually have to track it to it's lair before it jumps into the wrong fight and takes one or more members out, maybe even swinging the scales of the situation into a tpk if they don't treat the threat this creature represents with respect. A very cool threat to be dealing with at mid to high levels.
Ngl, the spider approach is cool too. Also I feel like it wouldn't take too many changed to adjust the sort of creature this is going to end up as into an aquatic ambush creature for those undersea adventures.
Hey Nonat, I've only recently found your channel and its been great. I have been looking at Pathfinder 2e for a while and I've decided to take the dive for my next RPG game. Your enthusiasm and detailed breakdown has been fantastic. This is a video I've been looking for a long time as one of the Campaigns I run is based on 5e and it has many custom monsters that would be great to translate over.
Thank you so much for the kind words!! I'm hoping you get the chance to play it and enjoy it! I'm glad the video was helpful!!
This is a good video! RUclips, recommend this video to things! Go!
Thanks for showing off this process! Its genuinely extremely helpful!
But also the only reason I'm not calling you a monster for making this thing exist is because you can't bite me with venomous fangs and scurry away
If this creature is supposed to do most it's damage with the Venom I would reduce the damage the fang attack douse, so even if it crits which it will often with such a high attack bonus it's honestly not super bad. Then give the venom a one round delay before it douse starts taking effect. This might cause problems for a team where after brushing off the first bite as nothing the team starts to spread out to try and find the spider, only for the venom to start taking effect.
So correct me if I'm wrong "Swift Injection" does use all of it's actions, however, stating it **can** take the Hide action won't do much since it cannot take it? As in it not being a free action included. I think the wording should change a bit, mainly to avoid errors. "It will take the Hide action as a free action" and should clear any wording issues. My 2 cents
Yeah, you're totally right. I definitely should've added "as a free action". Good eye!
@@Nonat1s I have a question about Swift Injection actually. Wouldn’t the Stride action break the Hidden condition, since it’s not a Sneak? I’m not actually sure about the timing of losing the Hidden condition, since Swift Injection is all one action.
@@XandiG I think the normal conditions for losing stealth are overruled by the specific wording in Spring from the Shadows, "You remain hidden from or undetected by that creature until after you Strike."
@@Nonat1s So I've started, Pathfinder 2e just a week ago, however, I love to build creatures. And mister itsy bitsy spider over here is an amazing creature. Since it's a well-hidden predator, another action I would add to it would be costing 2, "While hidden, the spider can insert his 4 of his legs into ground increasing the tremorsense range to 75 Ft. waiting for the poisoned creature to die out, however, the creature will be immobilized. While in the state, the creature can take free 1 bite action. The Immobilized condition continues up until the legs are removed from the soil as a free action." a description for this would be "The spider evolved quickly and lost its ability to spin a web, yet his legs still have the ability to sense creatures in his vicinity."
even by me, who use A LOT the monster editor from pf2 tools how you think about the creature is good to see. Just now I'm starting (with the help of some of the Pathfinder 2e's italian players) an entire "monster line" of characters from the Disney Classics in Pathfinder 2e. And some of them are even really funny to create (for example Gaston, who'll have all abilities that have the "No one [Ability] like Gaston", to mimic his song)
I love it!! I'd kill to see some of those someday, haha!!
@@Nonat1s just tell me where to send you the link for the telegram channel. Only thing, the description of the creatures (not the actual stats) are in Italian. If you would make a video about my channel I... I would love it!
43:25 i was really surprised to see aquatic ambush up on the screen and you not take something from that ability. there is also a few other abilities that could make sense here. giant viper has coil which increases the range of its next attack and hunting spiders will do something similar where they flex their whole body then spring off with all the stored potential energy. the viper has an ability called slink where if a creature ends its movement adjacent it can use its reaction to jump its movement away.
I'm really happy to find a Pathfinder 2e channel that goes this deep! As a first-time GM, thanks for this!
Feed the algorithm!
Also, cool monster. The party will never see it coming. Semi-literally
Someone commented that it would be nice if people made some level 0 or -1 monsters. I have figured out one reason they might not - the word requirements are between 500-600 words. If your monster is very low level and, consequently, doesn't have tons of abilities, then all that word count has to come in the description.
Literally just made a giant jumping spider, brogan. Nice, love those guys
They're my favorite kind of spider, thinking of getting one as a pet eventually.
Nice video, probably ... I saw the spider and I noped out real quick ^^
I would've given it a Camoflage ability and made the 3rd stage Necrotic, but I love it and really want to use it!
Never played PF2 before, so following you through the thought process of creating a monster from scratch is really good.
This was cool and informative. Still a bit fuzzy on everything, but excited to 'get good'.
Thanks for introducing me to rpgsuperstar, its a very neat creator.
Yeah, after I finished my entry I just posted it. I never would have entered it if I kept thinking on it. It won't be getting very far, I doubt I'll get many votes, but I wanted to give my depression and anxiety the middle finger.
Hell yeah!! Screw those guys! Depression and Anxiety hang around, they eat our food, and don't pay their rent!
This takes me back to a mutated crocodile I made a year and some change ago (algolthu/aboleth worshippers not fully understanding their masters' fleshwarping techniques), with a pseudo-shield block it could perform by sloughing its outer layer of flesh and scales. I have no idea where the notebook containing that thing went, and that makes me sad.
I read the title of this video and I almost drove my thumb THROUGH my phone
I'd just like to add that the tremorsense should've been precise as real spiders are covered in small sensitive hair that detect vibration in the air. Most spiders have subpar eyesight, apart from ogre-face spider and jumping spiders, which have superb vision.
shouldn't the fangs melee Strike have the Finesse trait?
watching this again as it is really helpful and insightful. again thank you. Could I ask for an update to the recording or maybe an re-recording?
Been waiting for a video like this.
Cool spider.
This is a GREAT video!!! Thanks!
I remember during the livestream with the Battlezoo people, it was mentioned that your Ooze Angel might have a Greater form if there were abilities you wanted that were too out-of-scope for a monster of the original level. Is it possible to submit those Greater versions as monsters alongside the standard form?
I have . . . ideas.
That might be why you have 3 submissions
Man, I love to just sit down to play a ttrpg with a nice cold ADVERTISER FRIENDLY BEVERAGE in hand.
Oof. Good video to sleep to. Thank you, my dude!
Important to note: There’s a module for this on Foundry
Take away the breath weapon, and Godzilla is an animal. Scale is power, and the titanic beast could come from another planet, time, or outer plane. Whether it lives or dies, the animal goes back to where it came from in a minute, so even if you summon a enormous blue ox, it won't wreck an entire forest.
I don't know about acid damage for the Venom ability. I would expect to see persistent acid damage in a separate ability somewhere instead, rather than in a poison statblock. Still, this was really fun. I want to see more videos of you creating monsters, but I understand that you actually do provide something similar on your Patreon.
I know this is an older video, but I think a similar action would be the Skittering Assault of the Gogiteth from Bestiary 1, pg 183.
Skittering Assault [two-actions] The gogiteth Strides three times. Once per Stride, it can attempt a leg Strike against a creature in its reach at any point during the Stride; it must make each attack against a different creature, but it doesn’t apply its multiple attack penalty until after making all its Strikes. If any of the Strikes result in a critical failure, Skittering Assault ends.
Instead of being able to make a Strike each Stride, it could just make a single Strike at some point during those three Strides.
I found this in less than a minute by searching "during".
Your spider is master proficiency. Monsters have potency equivalent as character of that level.
This was petty awesome
One thing you didn't notice on the 1e stat block for the Cheata is it has sprint which is an ability which lets it go even faster for a short amount of time. I don't think it's a flaw in your design but I thought I should point it out since, I prolly wouldn't have seen it and I only know cause one of my players had a Cheata familiar in a 1e game.
EDIT: oh nm, you did add an ability similar to that.

"They STICK to things"
Sticcums flashback provided) Thanks.
Btw I want to make sure - are you going to play in Tale Tales in the future?
You are so amazing with improvisations.
That's so nice to hear! Thank you!! I hope I'll be on again sometime! Usually it's just scheduling that's an issue.
@@Nonat1s I wish you luck and a win for your super spider you totally deserve it.
Also thanks for permission to use it.
For the algorithm!
Shouldn't swift injection have the move trait? Or is that unnecessary cuz stride is a move action?
Nice video... how you think that spider look like?
So I have never played pathfinder before so I am unsure of this but would it work potentially better to have it be a 3 stage poison (6 rounds) Stage 1, Doomed 1, Stage 2 Doomed 2, Stage 3 Doomed 2, Drained 2. ?
Okay so how much do I have to donate to your patreon for you to do more of these but for humanoids?
The humanoids in the bestiary are desperately lacking in terms of high level threats. There are none higher than level 7 and only 9 with a level higher than 4 and most of those are things like hags and yetis and medusa. Would love to see your take on something like a high level gnoll, orc or hobgoblin (or goblin).
46 minutes?! Guess I ll have a good time.
Also, you totally missed out on making a "I've created a monster!" type joke.
i have to create a pathfinder 2e version of stradh von zarovitch, do you have any suggestions? thank you all in advice!!!
I know this video is a few years old and im now just finding this I have monster but how do i get it photo on to the templet
Wait your drinking Nectar of the Gods? How did you get this? We must know... 😁😆😅🤣😇
Sneak attack is unnecessary? I am not sure you have ever met a spider before *laughs*
*tosses self on the fire to get away from the Spider*
cool video
I'm at the 7 minute mark and if you don't make a snake i will be very dissapointed. Tough i will still like the video
I love spiders but a snake would be better
@@diegorodrigues9528 What about a snake that can shoot web 🐍 🕷
@@XandiG it would need to be a beast
@@diegorodrigues9528 There are undersea worms that are very much like this, using a sort of webbing to slow or immobilize potential food
I have made my first monster!
i like monsters
Why are you spending so much time making sure that the wording is the same as the rule books'?
Because that's part of the design process when creating something for a system.
If you ask any professional creator, they will stress how important it is to get your wording exactly correct. Mark Seifter Has gone on record saying hes dropped points on a creation, because they used bite instead of jaws when describing an attack. Jaws is the correct term. There is no such thing as a bite attack.
This is a comment
I'm making it to help with your vid's
Algorithm engagement heuristics

The game mechanics of PF2 have many serious flaws, one of which is a very slim choice of monsters to choose from at the level of your players. This contest comes as no suprise.
Bro, this is a 3rd party book.
Making any enemy takes 30 minutes top as evident in this video. I don't know what you're comparing as your baseline from which PF2 is 'seriously flawed' by comparison, but if its PF1, you've clearly never had to design encounters for a level 15+ party. Also pf2 has only been out two years and already has 3 bestiaries soooo
