I just had to do this recently. Another good tip I've used is don't wear makeup while your skin is healing. My skin was feeling irritated from applying makeup with fingers or brushes and maybe even from the makeup itself so cutting that out also helped speed up the healing process for me.

Something that seemed to really help me is how I cleanse my face. When I saw Dr. Dray get some cleanser from her pump bottle, I noticed she doesn't use a whole pump worth of product. It seems like a stupid difference but I noticed it and started using much less cleanser while also trying my best NOT to constantly rub it in to problem areas. Being much gentler and using less cleanser made a huge difference. I got in to skin care because I was having trouble for the first time in my mid 30s because of having to wear masks for 8 hours at work. I started putting on Vaseline (Cerave healing ointment) in thin layers to problem areas under the mask, for me the nose crease, tip of the nose and cheek nearest to my nose. I can still get a breakout but it's a very weak breakout and heals overnight. I'm miles better than when I started.

Definitely agree on the point about how to tell when your barriers damaged bc normal products and water sting. That’s my tell-tale sign: when my sunscreens that never irritate sting. And since I have rosacea, I’m so sensitive to barrier damage. I do the things you mentioned, as well as incorporating products w oats. I also really love using moisturizers w omega 3s and cholesterol. The cerave healing ointment is a godsend as well.

i find that washing my face only once a day is a big help if my barrier is damaged. i just skip the morning wash and put on a moisturizer and spf, then do a gentle cleanse in the evening and use something like the paula's choice omega+ serum with fatty acids and cholesterol, moisturizer, and an occlusive like cerave healing ointment or a nice oil to prevent moisture loss over night.

my first suggestion is that skin barrier problems are not always caused by products. They absolutely can be the consequence of you skin regimen (and that that is fine we're not perfect) but it might not be. I experienced this in the past and I didn't do anything 'wrong' I had undiagnosed illnesses, anxiety and I had senstive skin in the first place......
I would suggest getting advice from a professional if you can. There are numerous illnesses that cause your skin to not be able to cope.
You should consider avoiding sun exposure and if possible suncream on any badly affected areas (ie use hats/clothing/shade).
Exploring how you support your emotional and mental health will really help you. Blaming yourself will not help you to heal. It is not uncommon for people who are ill, traumatised, experiencing severe stress etc to also experience severe skin problems. This is a time to show kindness to yourself.
Also if you have rosacea you should discuss with your medical expert about not using adapline (or what ever you have been prescribed to control it) before making any major changes.
You can also use a product called silcocks base to cleanse and moisturise with. It is very inexpensive and has a very high tolerance rate.

I had come to the end of my vitamin C tube and a lot splodged out, so I applied more than usual to my face and neck. Because I lie in bed reading before sleep with my head propped up, I think product accumulated in the fold of my neck and chest, possibly further irritated by that skin rubbing. I discontinued all actives on my lower neck and the next time I get a big dollop of vitamin C, the extra will not get going on my face and neck!

Just suddenly broken barrier feeling like the live skin is exposed and being hurt, unable to hold onto water. It stuck around for a week at least while I did my bare bones wash or rinse and moisturize. Finally made some improvement when I put on some aquaphor to the worst areas and left it even more alone. Going to talk to my doctor about if it could be a medication side affect or something. There are patches on my arm too. I totally messed up my barrier. I was on tret and I used to apply it on every alternate day. One night, idk why but I felt like applying tret even after applying it the previous night. In the next 2 days, I could see really weird whiteheads on my face and I thought that those might be acne. I applied more tret. When that didn't work and my face started having more acne, I started using Benzoyl Peroxide. That didn't work either, obviously. I started SA. Imagine what my skin must have gone through! Until one day, I was applying Vit C on my face and my entire face started stinging. Thar had never happened. Eventually, even niacinamide started stinging. Meanwhile, my acne had gotten worse and my skin looked terrible.
I immediately stopped using everything. I just cleansed my skin using Simple Refreshing facial wash and then used a moisturiser that contains squalene, cica, ceramides, cholesterol etc.
Thankfully, my skin is doing better now. I just feel bad about putting it through so much.

I'm actually having weird acnes even with the same products I have used more than a year, even with/without makeup. I suspect it is due to perimenopause. Never in my life I have so much acnes 😔 and they scar even if I let them be.

Wish this video came out five years ago. At the start of my 'actives' journey I way overdid it, red tight peely skin, the Sahara below my jaw, and so on. God, what a disaster. I'm now using Tret every night in one form or another, I use Vitamin C and Lactic Acid on the daily and also a Co Q 10 serum. At night, it is VERY basic. Tret, moisturizer, maybe, just maybe some Cica thing too. And I do sometimes lean on Cortizone.

Hey Michelle hope you are doing good.
I have a question, why does over exfoliation cause breakouts?
And what kind of breakouts does it cause? Are they closed comedones, are they filled with exces sebum or are they keratin bumps?
    Thanks a lot

my skin used to be so smooth and clear, but I neglected it during the quarantine because I got so busy :( it's now constantly dry and flaking. sometimes it feels tight and I have spots coming in nearly every day. at some point, my skin was so irritated, that just water or my mild moisturiser stung my cheeks. Its gotten a bit better now but I hope I can restore my skin's health

How does one wash spf off if they don't tolerate foaming or oil cleansers, only tolerate Cereve hydrating (non-foaming). The cereve cleansing bar strips, Farmacy Cleansing balm also strips, everything else gentle from gels to milks wont take just enough off to avoid build up but not the natural barrier to keep from breaking out, the result of either extreme.

I just got a couple of irritated red patches after using a new hydroquinone pigment treating product with its paired exfoliating product. But I should have realised my skin was already well exfoliated and should have waited a another week before trying these new products. My bad. So it's a few days of soothing zinc balms and nothing else, for my skin to recover. And sunscreen as always.

I've recently discovered that I'm allergic to a certain mask material that led to a damaged skin barrier. Not even physical or chemical exfoliants have done that much damage to this day. It was red, inflamed, greasy yet parched and peeling. Green tea and aloe vera saved me along with niacinamide. But it took me surprisingly 3 days, so I'm not sure if this is going to work for everyone.

I definitely cannot tolerate glycolic acid at all any longer. My daughter uses vanicream moisturizer, and we both use the cleanser but Im about to switch to the moisturizer myself. Not related to this video, but what do you do if your tretinoin tube develops small holes? I'm on my second tube of ReTrieve, and both of them have developed holes where I've squeezed the product out. This time it happened right away. So frustrating!! I've done a google search and it seems pretty common. People are either taping it up or throwing the tube away. Are Tretinoin creams sensitive to air, and/or would the cream react with tape that has been applied to the outside of the tube or from having aluminium wrapped around it?

@@shelby6 oral contraception. B vitamins as injections or high dosages orally are pretty highly allergenic. Usually it's painful bumps on the skin, like clogged pore, but you can't pick them. Mine were mainly around forehead, but my mum and cousin were less lucky - all over body, takes more than a month to recover.
