Great video, Joey! It looks like you had an awesome year in Germany. It's obvious from the footage, you made good use of your time spent abroad. I'm proud of you for that, because not everyone does, unfortunately. Furthermore, I thought you genuinely captured the emotion of saying goodbye to everyone at the airport. That's a tough day, no doubt ): Anyways, welcome back to America! I know you probably feel like a stranger in your own country right now... yeah, that doesn't go away. I see you gad a nice time. A year abroad is the best thing you can do to see the world in another perspective.
Glad you had a great time. So many don't, because most host families take foreign students for either financial reasons or to reduce the cost of their own teenager doing the program. Such host parents have no time for their foreign student, yet are legally permitted to allow her / him to go only on approved trips, which are all with other foreign students, so the hosted student still gets little contact with the host society. As for the foreign high school experience, that varies a lot too. The point is that this was ALWAYS a worthwhile experience 50 years ago; far less so after the '90s.

As someone who's done a German exchange (for only two weeks mind you) and also made a video about it, damn this was made really well. It looked so good too. Really entertaining and genuine, glad you had such a good time :)
Make sure to research which programs you study with. I have heard of some programs have relocated kids and put many Asian students in areas that had high hate crime rates. We shouldn’t support a program that supports anti-Asian hate. Please stop Asian hate! So please make sure to research before you go. Someone under the comment section of a RUclips video mentions CIEE as one of alleged programs(I think the video may have been deleted because i can’t find it) cbyx is partnered with ciee so make sure to be careful and research before going abroad with different programs.
Glad to see you liked Germany!! I went to the USA on the CBYX program 2018/19 so it’s really fun for me to see the opposite side :)

Hey Joey, I know that this is an old video and was in college most likely, but I was wondering what advice you had for an aspiring foreign exchange student for high school?
MisterMooMilk go for it. It’s life changing. The long term impact greatly outweighs the short term costs. Just don’t be careless. Try to find a program (like CBYX) that serves a purpose. The majority of “pay to play” exchange programs are incredibly mundane and lack experiences in size or nature compared with programs that you have to earn your way into. So yeah, basically find a program that you earn your way into.
Hey joey, i was just curious, before you left, how much german did you know? And when you returned home to America were you fluent?
Claire Custer I knew almost no german but by the time I left Germany I was pretty conversational. I could talk about most things just nothing too complicated like physics or something like that
