- It's expensive, it's coveted and it's about the size of an old VCR: it's an original Mu-Tron Bi-Phase. Famously used by Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia, the Smashing Pumpkins on "Siamese Dream" & countless others; the Bi-Phase is one of the most versatile and sonically rich phasers ever made. What would you throw this phaser on?
Check out this Bi-Phase and more at bit.ly/3IRxDQq.

Sonic Youth (specifically Lee Ranaldo) used one of these all over the album Washing Machine. Such a cool piece of gear.
I bought a Mu Tron at a pawn shop in Albany Georgia in 1983 or so for $40. With the sweep pedal. I sold it in the early 90s when I sold all my gear. Bad decisions.
Good story tho!
Ouch. 😢
I found one at a value village with the foot pedal for $20 years ago and sold it for over $400, even that hurts seeing what they go for now. I don't really miss it though since I have the Moog phaser which sounds better to me.
NSG (Never Sell Gear)
Joe is an incredibly talented guy and it's great to hear him showing off all the different dimensions of this pedal
So good seeing you doing another Bi-Phase video. Such a great piece of kit!
ARP Instruments purchased Mu-Tron, and as a regional salesman for ARP, I had the Bi-Phase in my demo kit. When the company went bankrupt, it was the one pedal they wanted back for the shutdown auction. I couldn't afford the the auction lot it was in.
1975 used this a lot on the pink album. So funky
that was a great video
I’ve played/recorded through these, several times - Gorgeous sounds.
I only had a chance to use this unit in a recording studio in the mid 90's. @06:12 It sounds like 70's-80's science documentary soundtracks. Very nice 👍
Sweet 😊
Edie Brickell - What I Am
Very cool piece of gear and very cool demo. I would have loved the demo a lot more if the audio inputs weren’t peaking and clipping all the time (especially that Les Paul).
I had this pedal back in the 1970’s…it was wild!
Guitar player in Georgia.
I also added a mic on it once.
Think Bowie…China Girl with….SHHHhhhhhhh.
We used to love to experiment with sounds like that.
2:10 this is somewhat of a debated statement re Siamese Dream. Vig and Corgan may have been joking, and mostly used either classic orange MXR phasers or an Eventide rack unit.
A few months back, someone claimed to demonstrate that a Mu-Tron was used dialed back as a filter on literally everything, which despite being madness got a lot of gullible attention.
Nice vid though, and it makes me want to take mine out of its glass case!
And where did you learn the definitive effects used to make that album?
@@CorbCorbin it's a rabbit hole of SP forums.. Of course I could have just believed the Wikipedia and repeated it with a serious face as Joe did here.
That stems from a segment of the Vieuphoria video where Butch and Billy just rip the piss out of the interviewer for like 8 minutes straight. If you give it a watch you’ll realise that they were definitely joking about running “everything through it”
so nice to hear moog pronounced right.
Love Hurts song
Ah, fix that phasor B LED!
Arturia did a decent vst plugin of this piece of gardware
Girl, that’s a 6’000$ CDN, phaser pedal 🤷♀️
I got a Beringher clone of the Bi-Phase recently, and while it’s not a 100% identical recreation, it’s near enough! And considering the difference in price, it’s impressive.
ooooh
I’ve always said “mew-tron“, but is it really pronounced “moo-tron”?
it's whatever yu prefer, personally
Yes.
@@summo113so,,, is it “whatever yoo prefer” or “whatever yew prefer“?
yes
It’s named after “Neutron” obviously. So your initial pronunciation is correct!
Constructive feedback: It would be helpful to hear the dry signal before the effected signal in every case. I own a Behringer Bi-phase so I already know it's capabilities, but I think this would be helpful to the uninitiated.
I'll take it!
Is it pronounced “moo-tron” or “mew-tron”?
Neutron!
Whoa. Forgot about the Mu-Tron.
Mu-Tron devices were a big part of Frank Zappa’s 70’s sound l!
lol was literary messing around with one of these yesterday at Switched on, Austin TX
It’s old…there are hundreds of pedals that make this…obsolete.
Mu-Tron is pronounced as in “Neutron” NOT “Moo-Tron”! It’s NOT a cow!
maybe there’s a regional accent thing going on here because I’d also pronounce neutron like “noo” not “neeuh” or whatever, like it’s a single vowel sound to me not gliding between vowels
@@kgramckow Like a “noo-tron” bomb versus a “new-tron” bomb!
