Ban Video Games? A History of Moral Panic & Media Censorship

  • Video game bans are once again a topic of discussion after the Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Florida. President Trump and other politicians have been calling for more regulations on video game violence. The belief that violent video games make killers is silly to me and a quick look a history will show that violence in media has little impact on violence in society. So today, we're going to talk about Moral Panic and Media Censorship in the last century. Topics will include censorship of film, movie review boards, pinball machines being banned, the Comics Code Authority censoring comic book, the PMRC giving parental advisory warnings for music with explicit lyrics, the Satanic Panic from the 80s & 90s, and finally video game censorship. Gameplay will be from Doom, Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty, Bully, Manhunt, Fortnite, and PUBG.

Video games aren't the problem, stuff that happens in real life is like family problems, bullys, mental illness, etc.

Do US schools have strict anti-bullying rules?
in Australia we have a 0 tolerance on bullying and you will be punished for it in schools doesn't stop it but it made it much more bearable (i say this as a guy who was bullied to the point he nearly stabbed someone in the neck in class out of anger due to the bullying) if that could happen to me the quiet kid who is always kind and nice i can see how bullying can cause school shooters to become what they are.
Bullying needs a 0 tolerance punishment you bully someone you get detention and get warned and a talking to and more punishments if needed.
Because Bullying can lead to mental illness which can lead to Shootings.

I wonder how many of y'all played violent video games, watch violent movies, & listen to violent style music & had not violent thoughts of going on mass shootings or commit crimes? Because I've played violent videogames & watched violent movies & had no violent tendencies, to commit crimes or go on a mass shooting.

Exactly. Most enjoy violent media but know the difference between right and wrong and would not commit acts like that in the real world. They are turning a blind eye to the real issues.

Same, been playing Violent Video games with the SNES and Golden Eye N64 and watch Action Movies and I'm not going to shoot up anyone. This is a Mental Health and a Society Issue, but then again these "Old Timers" are just brushing it under the rug and are afraid of new things that they don't understand. They want us to be little Pastor Boys/Girls living under a Saint Bubble with no violence what so ever. Bad news for them, is when that bubble bursts I'm not going to be saving their sorry little husks of their so called lives.

Let's look at it this way. I've been listening to heavy metal for over a decade, been watching violent films for the majority of my life, and have enjoyed many gory and violent video games over the years. Still, I think that violence is an immature way to solve problems. I lived with parents that are truly pacifists, I was never surrounded by angry people, and I was never bullied in school. *Meanwhile,* you look at some of the backgrounds of these people who shoot up schools, and you'll see that they come from broken homes, have abusive parents, and have been subjected to bullying for years.
The problem isn't with video games, movies, or music. The problem is us. You want tangible results? You want these attacks to actually *stop?* Then the government isn't what needs to bring change. *You* need to change. *I* need to change. We *all* have to change.

I think you have a point but to say that violence in music, movies, and video games has no effect is wrong in my opinion. anything you come into contact with influences you whether you know it or not. the difference between yourself and school shooters is not only household situation but also how your brain works. someone with a immature mind understands violence different and therefore any form of violence can influence them more than it influences you.

We studied the effect of violent video games on people in one of my university courses. As much as politicians love to blame video games for making people violent there have been a total of 0 studies that have ever shown a true cause and effect relationship between violent games and violent behaviors. All these years of games being blamed and yet no one has ever found a direct link. Why? Because one doesn’t exist. If anything most studies find the opposite to be true, that violent games create less violent youth. But sure, continue to blame the games instead of the guns. Great analysis video BTW.

The reality is that people can propose all kinds of further gun control - video control - movie control - etc. None of it’s going to make a damn difference, because they don’t want to address the cold hard facts that people set on perpetrating evil acts will find a way of following through with those acts. They won’t deal with the “Root Cause’s” because they requires the applied assumption that it will cost serious funds. We should have addressed this after the very first school shooting, there should have been measures put in place to make school campuses the hardest targets to perpetrate.

Funny how Americans will try to not blame guns and blame everything else only slighty related...In my(and many other) countries we dont have guns as a standard, and we also barely ever have any shooting...You know what i do when some stranger breaks into my house, I give him what he wants and call the police. Also a fun thing that usually when houses over here get robbed the robbers dont have guns either, because they are hard to get here. And even if there is a robber with a gun in your house, they usually want your money and thats all...what right does a gun give you to shoot somone else?

What if they want your daughter, or simply kill you just for the rush? I'm glad i at least have a decent chance of surviving armed intruders. You have to just pray you dont get killed. Unarmed countries have a higher rate of home invasion since the intruder doesn't have to worry about getting shot. I've never had a home invasion because criminals know my house could be armed unlike yourself.

I've played violent video games since i was VERY young (4-5) with Tekken and even Golden Axe on the sega mega drive. I play video games as my release from the day and my work as well as the fact that I naturally have a bad temper which i think we all have in some way or another. Despite this, I wouldn't EVER think about harming another person/people in any way by the use of knives, guns or any other weapon that i could obtain. What seems to be overlooked here is that the majority of these people who commit these mass shootings and alike have got problms outside of what they already see in video games. Mental issues and bullying has a tenancy to push some people to the extreme and these people will wreak havoc when they choose, regardless if they play sonic the hedgehog or Mortal Kombat!

Tipper Gore... PMRC... that was my era. To see how successful that was, check out the track "Ode To Tipper Gore" on Warrant's Cherry Pie album, which they added to get the Parental Advisory label. LOL The "Satanic Panic", yes, I remember it well. People were freaked out! I was a metal-head, so this hit home for me. Luckily my parents were pretty down to earth, so they didn't really get too caught up in it, and I was allowed to listen to whatever I wanted to. I'm pretty sure every generation will have their panics and fights over censorship. As long as the majority of us stay grounded and logical, we'll get through it. ;) Great video!

This is beyond me at this point.
To set the tone, i am french.
First, france and USA have pretty much same "culture" in term of entertainment (we play same videos games, watch the same bullcrap SW8 and eat at macdo's [the only real difference would be in term of what sport we watch, but i'm no sport-fan so I can't talk]).
The only MAIN difference on that subject is gun control : in france, even obtaining a handgun as a retired military general is a husstle. I don't need to say anything about gun control (or the complete lack of it) in the USA.
    However, here's the thing :
Do we have, in France, the same amount of school shootings and massacres as the USA ?
    Simple answer : no.
    Proof you want ?
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_shootings_in_the_United_States
Here's the list of school shootings in USA.
Now, and YES, i know they aren't technically the same thing but I cannot find any list for school shooting in France (maybe because we have so few of them ?), here's the list of massacres in France :
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_France
Now, I want you to look at thoses two documents, and say to me that guns aren't the problem. Come on.
They are not the CAUSE. Of course not. Objects cannot think nor act on their own.
But they are part of the equation. That, is without a doubt.
Maybe they are INDEED, by the most lucky coincidence in Universe's history, not the problem.
But allow me to state *MY* opinion : they are.

I've been playing violent video games since I was 13. I never have and never will have any thoughts of enacting a mass shooting, nor a small scale shooting or any kind of shooting. Yes it's fun to play shooter style video games, but that's because they're designed to be fun. If you can't differentiate reality from a video game, then that's where the problem lies, not within video games themselves. In my opinion, the cause of these mass shootings will almost always fall down to some kind of mental issue; What said mental issue is could vary immensely case-to-case, but if you're in a mental state where you can allow yourself to perform a mass shooting, there is a definite problem with said mental state.

It is nothing short of a testament to your intellect that I would listen to a COD youtuber go on a 30 minute rant about a political issue occurring in a country I don’t even live in.
Keep it up mate, love all your videos.

I just think all this violence can be stopped by better cop training, and more security, as well as more strict tests to get guns. But I am in no way in favor of banning any types of guns. Mental health and evil idiots is the problem.

It’s simple, restrict gun access like Australia, even under our Mental Health Act as a clinician I have to notify the Police if the person I have assessed has access to (either directly or indirectly) firearms. Australia still has the highest firearms massacre (involving a single gunman)...we then banned access to guns with legislation, a buyback gun amnesty and what do you know...no more massacres.
