In today's video we review the Monster, a Gerstlauer Infinity Coaster at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa. As of late 2020, the Monster is unquestionably the best roller coaster in the state of Iowa. But with Adventureland's impressive capital investments the past several years, as well as the opening of the brand new Lost Island Theme Park in nearby Waterloo, Iowa in 2022 - how long do we think Monster will hold the title of Iowa's Best Roller Coaster? Could there be a coaster war emerging in the state of Iowa? I give my complete thoughts on the Monster and give it a ranking on the Park Pros coaster rating tier list.

I like how Adventureland took a chance with a coaster model that at the time hadn't been in America before, and it paid off for them
Totally agree, they could have easily settled for a Eurofighter and while that still would have been a great addition for them, I'm glad they made a larger investment to really knock it out of the park.
Completely agree.
I will say, I do think that Adventureland has one of the most well-rounded coaster layouts for a smaller park: a smaller family coaster with The Underground, two slightly more intense family coasters with Phoenix and The Outlaw, a classic airtime-oriented woodie with Tornado, and then two extreme inverting coasters, both vastly different. Honestly, the two roller coasters I would really like to see are a kiddie coaster and then an airtime machine.
Totally agree. Imagine they use the rest of Dragon's space to add a Chance Hyper GTX... their lineup would be so good.
Completely agree!!
I wish Adventureland would drop a little money into updates for The Underground... it's in pretty rough shape these days.
@@ParkPros or they made the tornado a RMC lol
I absolutely agree! A decent kiddie coaster and a smooth, fast no inversions coaster would be my favorite.
Adventureland is my home park. I love Monster, such an epic hangtime coaster. But I will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS miss that log ride. The last season it was operating, a friend and I rode it eight consecutive times, the ride operators just let us stay on, right before the park closed, and bought every picture. It was just such a precious ride. It was popular enough, I'm sure they would have put the Monster somewhere else, if the thing wasn't the last log ride of it's make and model. Apparently they were hand making replacement parts for it.
I was born and raised in Des Moines so, this was my home park until 2007 and I would love to see The Tornado get an RMC Remake and I think they could do a Tornado like spin at the end before it heads back to the station. That way it would truly live up to it's Tornado name.
Same! What would be your favorite ride at Adventureland? Most of mine are: Sidewinder, The Monster, Underground, Outlaw, Space shot, Tornado, mostly all of th em 😅
@@yallfw.dd224 I would say the Tornado is still my favorite but Monster is a close 2nd. I love the outlaw too.
@@yallfw.dd224 Honestly With the old animatronics The underground is pretty scary
Wait an Infinity of that size costs $9m!? That's insanely cheap, even considering the low throughput
Yup! Insanely good value
I'm from the area and am really hoping for some promising indoor attractions and dark rides that would allow for park visits during colder seasons. I really hope they get creative with it. We don't need another Adventureland - we need a mini Disney Iowa.
Hoping we can see more infinities in the states...they’re so versatile!
Completely agree, I'm a big fan of both Monster and Hangtime.
I’m stuck in my room for 5 days with COVID and your videos are getting me through. I love your delivery and some of those good super witty comments, so that’s me for that.
Appreciate the comment. RUclips is a grind but remarks like this make it worth it!
Thank you for showing so much love to iowa
So pumped to see a coaster war between my two home parks!! Great video and was surprised to hear about the launch coaster for lost island. That will be a great “new” thing for the GP around here for sure!
Yeah, Kanonen is definitely going to be a big GP pleaser.
Only 5 more concrete piers left to build totally about 100. A crew from south Africa is here and preparing to install betty soon!
@@brianzoll2433 There is a lot going on at the park right now. Can't wait to start seeing rides being built. Quite a few buildings are up and looking good also
That drawn out vertical loop is so cool looking I want to ride this soon
For me, pacing is how quickly a ride throws an exciting element at you. So while Monster travels through a lot elements slowly, I don't mind since the slow speed gave a ton of hangtime on the inversions. In fact, I genuinely love the trim brake right before the end because of the lateral hangtime on the turnaround and final corkscrew.
Glad to see more videos on my Home Park!
Hey!! Its another Iowa native!
Yeah man great job definitely agree. I am a Des Moines native work at Adventureland one summer years ago before monster was even thought of. And was so glad when it opened! Monster 👹 is the best in Iowa. I can wait for lost Island to open as I will be heading there and look forward to a in State amusment park/ coaster war.
Great video bro, I was going to head down to Adventureland this summer but just wasn't able to.
We took my son, daughter in law and grandson to Adventureland in July for my son's bday...our first time there and we will def be going again!!👍👍
The Midwestern Hangtime...
This is better than Hangtime.
Really? Now it’s even higher on my bucket list.
Monster is slightly older than Hangtime and from what I've heard actually has more hangtime than Hangtime.
More like Hangtime is a West Coast Monster
@overbanked TBH, that actually sounds better.👍
last time i was at ADVENTURELAND PARK WAS IN 1999>>went there this july 4th 2021>>21 YRS LATER and it has GROWN IN 21 YRS!! IT'S HUGE NOW!! more rides and everything there!! IT WAS AWSOME...had a awsome time THERE YESTERDAY!!
I late but I love these vids
I'm curious to see what you'll think of the two new coasters. I love hearing about this amusement park that I grew up with. I even worked alongside one of the Krantzes at the zoo. She was a pleasure.
Great content! I love Adventureland. It is one of the best parks in the country- a beautiful atmosphere, super-friendly employees and good rides. I haven't ridden Monster, but I have been on Kanonen. It is good and would be a worthy attraction at most parks. I wouldn't call it world-class but it's fun. I bet Monster is the better ride for my tastes, but that's not a knock on Kanonen.
The "dive loop" is part of the Finnish loop, an Inversion thats unique to gerstlauer, first seen on Junker at PowerLand in Finland (hence the name). It's a variant of another element invented by Intamin, the Norwegian Loop, which is basically a dive loop, followed by an Immelmann loop. First seen on Speed Monster at TusenFryd in (you guessed it) Norway, it's also seen on Fahrenheit at Hersheypark.
Monster>Hangtime as somone who has ridden both Hangtime literally lacks the Hangtime. Thank you fantastic video! Love the Lost Island and Adventureland vidoes keep them coming please!
Love this one
Hi I'm from Iowa and every year we go there and I love the rides :)
I live right down the street from Adventureland and the Monster is one of our favorite coasters. We are not sad about the dragon's demise. I'm always going down 8th street to take my daughter to dance everyday and I've been seeing the progress of Dragon Slayer. We are hoping to get season passes again this coming year. We took a break because of Covid.
i'm from IOWA>> went to ADVENTURE LAND this year 2021 for the 4th of JULY WEEKEND,HAD A BLAST for the day there>>went on>>THE MONSTER and THE PHOENIX RIDE>> BOTH AWSOME RIDES>>this sept. THE DRAGION SLAYER!!
Pacing is definitely not the main goal with Monster... it's all about the hangtime and inversions. For me it's a top 50 coaster and it's my favorite Gerstlauer I've ridden. Great review!
Just had to double check my list, but yeah, this is also my top Gerstlauer.
This definitely isn’t my favourite gestlauer. They don’t make the best gurstlauers in the USA. All the best ones are in Europe. The smiler is my fave gurstlauer
@@Gabes1321 I'd love to check those out one day. I've never been to Europe so all I have to choose from is what we have in America
@@thequackenscoasterchannel2927 you should definitely check them out. Smiler and Karnan are great
i see this park getting a vekoma launch coaster in either 2024 or 2025
I really hope so as this place is my home park and only one within 3 hours or so... Launch coasters are my favorite thing in the planet tbh. I went on opening day today and it was pretty packed. I think with their new coaster opening next month I think they could be ready to open another big coaster by 2023 or 2024.
Monster is my #11 out of 200! Such an underrated coaster! It blew me away! The airtime and hangtime was amazing! This was a steal for 9 mil!👍🏼
Monster looks amazing - high on my bucket list!
It's so good!
@@ParkPros The Smiler is my favorite coaster I’ve been on and I would definitely love to ride more Gerstlauer infinity coasters in the future. Also - awesome review!
@@MrCollerRoaster Thank you man!
It’s amazing! I live in Iowa and go every single summer
We loved it, it was 100 the day we went but so fun
You should do a video on the dragon slayer at Adventureland
Adventureland's lagoon looks like the best contender for a Chance Rides Hyper GTX. It would be an affordable airtime machine for the park, and if anything like Lightning Run at KK it would give the park a really strong 1-2 punch for thrill seekers. Fingers crossed
I talked about that in the video below. Would also be my top choice for that area. ruclips.net/video/cbQCqvD3PyA/видео.html
I ❤ Adventureland
Iowan here
Go Iowa!
This is why I love living in Iowa 😂😂
I'm from iowa!!!
Also I can't wait for dragon slayer
Can’t belive they would put that in the place of the log ride 😭
And now go figure, both Adventureland AND Lost Island are both getting new coasters in 2023!
I’d say I’m pretty quick
The hang time is the point in monster. That is it’s intention and design. Not a thing wrong with it!
New, as of just a few days ago. Adventureland has been sold to palace Entertainment..the owners of Kennywood Park. It is hard to say just why, but it likely had to do with the owners of Adventureland being sued sued over the water ride accident resulting in the death of a child this past summer. Now granted, a large company could plop down a very large investment for a major coaster, but I would have preferred it remained a family owned park. they were really going in the right direction..adding 3 new coasters since 2016. the new owners have announced some ride removals & are adding 8 new kiddie rides for 2022 & two major attractions for 2023. they are not releasing details yet of the major additions..only saying that they are rides. so could Adventureland be getting something like a Premere launch coaster or their own S & S mega looper? the other project I dream of is the RMC treatment for Tornado. the old woodie is about on its last leg & they will have to do something with it.
they took out>THE LOG RIDE and REPLACED it with>> THE MONSTER RIDE!! They did AWAY with >>THE LOG RIDE ON LABOR DAY>>2015!! I LOVE THE LOG RIDE!! R.I.P. LOG RIDE!! 🙏😘🙏🙏🕊😱😨😲😥 What's next?? THE RANGING RIVER!!??
my visit they were rolling trains
Let me say first I'm proud of my home park (pride hurt in July 2021). Open since 1974. HOWEVER, I'm deeply concerned for the lack of redundancy regarding restraints on the monster. I feel at bare minimum, adventureland should add seatbelts to this ride. I want my home park to thrive, I have so many great nostalgic memories from adventureland that will stick with me for all my days. I'm not certain adventureland would ever be able to recover from a guest fatality, I truly believe that would be it for them. It is just not worth that kind of risk, I positively hope they take a look at that topic. (Oh boy, oh boy).
I was there the day the worker on The River Rapids died. :(
It’s like this guy predicted the future of when that kid died on the raging river
@@ashtyncox3414 :/
🤦♂️ damn it adventureland...... damn it
I was the the 1000th viewer
Wait... 9M???? thats crazy, Only 3M more and the dragon slayer would be more then the monster.
if the people who own the park wants to be a chain, please go for Michigan's Adventure
It's a family-owned park. Always has been.
Not recently.
