  • A driver's eye view of the line from Shrewsbury to Welshpool and almost Machynlleth (Talerdiddig). This was recorded in the summer / autumn of 1993 (I think) from the cab of Derby Lightweight DMU M79900 Test Coach Iris. There is a commentary mentioning features along the line such as stations, level crossings, mileposts etc.
It is as recorded except where I've edited out a couple of long stationary waits!

Nice video. Good bit of history here, as Westbury passing loop/ token exchange point was abolished soon after this film as part of linespeed improvements. Then in 2011 the RETB radio signalling system was replaced with ERTMS.

Saw a cab ride between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth from May 1988. If this is 1993, its crazy to see how much changed to the infrastructure in only 5 years: the A5 bypass being newly opened, the removal of the Shrewsbury Abbey railyards; the ones at Hook-a-Gate too and the repositioning of the line at Welshpool due to the A483. 25 years after this and barely anything has changed, except houses just beyond Sutton Bridge and the redoubling just after Welshpool.

What amazes me(as a driver) is the total lack of linesde greenery back then. It's just left to go wild now.

Haven't watched as yet as it's been filmed in Widescreen, but shown/uploaded here in 4:3/looks squashed! Needs sorting out please?

Hi, the video was recorded in 4:3 as it was done in 1993 and I doubt BR would have had a wide-screen camera lol.
I made it as a 16:9 video so it would give the best quality, but it hasn't been squashed at all.
      Thanks for watching!

Thanks Nick - I have a love for widescreen/16:9 thus hate seeing "squashed-up" videos. BR now shoot most of the Cab Cams in 16:9 so they've hit the 21st Century, cheers Dave.

You definitely have to drive a stinky car if you live in Wales! The scale of the Beeching cuts in Wales is just unbelievable! It's stupid you cant go directly from South Wales to mid Wales for instance and a single track all the way to Aberystwyth is absurd and all those bloody level crossings means the trains that do run move incredibly slowly.

Lack of use is the problem. Beeching only cut lines that were seriously underused and loss making. Aberystwyth doesn't generate enough traffic to warrent a double line. Use the trains that still exist or one day they too will be lost.
