  • I'n this video I will go over what you need to do to configure your network settings to allow remote access to a Plex server on a network where 2 routers are in use (Double NAT) and one of the routers cannot be configured in bridged mode.
    GUIDE: drive.google.com/open?id=1rkJ...
    PLEX: Troubleshooting Remote Access: support.plex.tv/articles/2009...
    NOTE: Since we are using residential routers with DHCP it is possible your Plex server could be given a different IP address at some point, in which case just run ipconfig /all and update your static IP from the network adapter properties on your system. You will also need to update your "internal router" port forward rules to forward to the new IP. To my knowledge there is no way around this other than to use Domain Name System (DNS) to manually specify/force network addresses. SOME routers have minimal DNS tools to accomplish this; however, mine don't so I was not able to show this. Another option would be to configure a DNS server in your home network. This can be done with Windows or Linux (Linux would be 100% free and is somewhat easy to manage once you get the hang of it:
    Linux (Ubuntu 17): • Ubuntu 17.10 Server - ...
    Linux (CentOS/RedHat): • RHEL 7 / CentOS Instal...

    To help some other people out, setting the ISP modem/router to IP passthought can also help resolve this issue. You will find the gateway address of your private rouoter will then get a public IP adddress. I have swapped routers a few times and the ISP router was bound to a MAC of an old router. Causing me to get a NAT address from ISP router causing double NAT. With this video I was able to troble shoot the issue and assign the correct MAC address in the IP passthought and now have a public IP as my private WAN address. Thus fixed the problem. Thanks man this helped.

    Nice work. This framework was enough for me to figure out my own situation. The difference for me was that the Hitron router/modem provided by my ISP doesn't have a LAN/Port Forwarding element in the admin setup. I was able to forward all IP Addresses to a specific LAN 10/100 jack on the router (1,2,3,4). Worked perfectly! Thanks for figuring this out and sharing.

    K JL - you just made me a VERY happy man.Thank you for this video - your's is the FIRST one that ever explained that %99.9 of us out there have 2 routers! The one the ISP provided and the one that we all have because we want more control and a better product.
    Full disclosure I never had remote access working - didn't need it on my plex server. BUT I was bored - knew it was there and thought - why not just enable it?
    After months of playing and reading and re-reading and watching videos. 'Listening' to people scream on the Plex forums. I finally came across your video around midnight last night.
    I like many other already had port FWDing on my own router and a static IP on my plex server. Was following along right up until you logged in to the ISP router.......... I thought there is no way that I will be able to login to the router right? Wrong! They left the default PW.
    Next thing you know I am port FWDing the ISP router to my Asus router.
    Bingo Bango - remote access is all green! Thank you!!!

    Hey @KJL, my ISP is giving me two public ip's, one that is shown on my router is different from the one that plex server detects/googling what's my ip shows.
    Some say it's a double NAT implemented by my ISP, is there any way around this?

  • @gabrielvasconcelos2354

    Great video!! But I'm still having the problem you said in the end of the video (successful for A second followed by Double NAT error). I have configured my server to a static IP (currently running on a raspberry pi), I successfully created the port fowarding rule in my external router BUT I just can't find the internal router (doind the tracert command only gets me to failed ip connections). My current setup is a modem/router (which I'm considering the external router) and two TP-link powerline extensors (they have their own IP but don't have a port fowarding setting, so i suppose it only bridges my connection). The server is connected to one of the extensors.
    Any help or advice you could give me would be extremely helpfull!!!

    • @KJL00
      @KJL00  4 года назад

      I think because they dont have their own port forwarding rule this issue is happening. Can you set the Plex server's default gateway as the external router/modem? That way any traffic would be going directly to the Plex server. Instead of trying to be forwarded through the extenders.

  • @erkme73

    Do you know of any way to access Plex server if the first router is not under your control? Folks live at a condo with free fast (Gbit) wifi internet - but they can only pull a private IP. I have no issue using a second router and WISP to set up a private network for their devices, but without access to the gateway router and port forwarding, I'm unable get Plex configured for external access. It does work with Plex relay, but with a 1mbps limit (2 for Plex pass users), it really cripples the service. Can you think of any way (including VPN) that might make the Plex server visible to people on the WAN?

  • @chuallan1328

    Hi, great video, and i think it probably can fix the double nat issue i had for years.
    Can you please clarify how exactly you set up your routers? Because the first and second ip addresses shown from the command tracert 8888 (from your video) are opposite to what i have.
    My setup is isp router (192.168.0.1)--> my own router (192.168.1.1)--> plex server (192.168.1.x).
    So i am confused when I see you referring to the ip address (192.168.0.1) as your private router. This is mentioned in point 6 and 7 of your instruction.
    One more strange thing in my situation is, although my own router's ip address starts from 192.168.1.x (the address via website access), when I did ipconfig command, the ip address of my own router starts with 192.168.0.x).
    Apology for the long message, but your help will be highly appreciated. Thanks

    • @KJL00

      The router I refer to as a "ISP router" is a fiber modem provided by my ISP. This modem/router is responsible for the network in one building, an ethernet cable goes from this building into another building where the second router (2nd network) and plex server is. • @KJL00
      @KJL00  4 года назад

      Port forwarding is usually done on a router not a switch. Switches (especially non-enterprise) typically behave as just a hub and don't manage anything. I am not familiar with wifi towers (its not something that's common where I live). My assumption would be that there is some form of network addressing done on these towers since that's what you are using to connect to the internet. If you use the same tower every time you would have to configure port forwarding on the tower then on your router....(same idea as ISP router and private router). If it's even possible to for you to connect to/manage the wifi tower. If you are bouncing between several towers it is probably way too inconsistent to set up this way. It might not be possible in this type of network. I did this video because I am familiar with what I have and this type of set up. Sorry.

      After a while meaning what minutes, hours, days? If its basically doing what I described at the start of the video then it might not be set up correctly for the forwarding. Some of this can be dependent on your ISP modem/router too. If all else fails you can have your ISP's support assist.
