Without seeing you play, I would say make sure you're strumming with your wrist and not your arm. Double pick (pick up then pick down) with as little movement of your wrist as possible. Also, your fret-hand fingers will help mute the strings below the string you're playing just by resting over the unplayed strings a little bit.
