  • Sigil VTT (D&D's new 3D virtual tabletop) is building up to be possibly the best 3D VTT out there.

Maybe. The fact that no one mentioned anything about pricing has me more than me a little worried. This tool has the potential to implement literally everything that made me stop playing modern videogames. Combine that with earlier remarks by Hasbro exces that D&D is undermonetized and the picture can turn pretty grim very fast.

Dont forget the subscription service, them wanting to sell skins, and ditch the community they've created for the past decade for gamers.

And what's wrong with the first two? Hasbro/WOTC is a company, after all, and they're going to make money-a subscription service to use a VTT isn't that far-fetched as multiple VTTs cost, namely Foundry, which is good.
As for skins, are we the same community willing to pay $50 for unpainted plastic and some microtransactions for something that is entirely unnecessary to play the game? I don't think it's a bad idea.
For online play, I think this will help cement immersion, especially for neurodivergent people and especially children, bringing new people to the scene and making it far more accessible.

Oh. Great. Yet another subscription required service. Yay.

It's not a new one. You can play for free or with the already existing dnd beyond subscription

Just remember that D&D is „under-monetized“ and those poor people of WotC and Hasbro really need your subscription fee.

The big issue with 3d VTTs like this is simply that you cannot make a map on the fly. 2d I could easily upload a map in a minute or so.
While it would be neat to play around with. The only way it even remooootely has a shot at widespread use would be free sharing of maps others make and hoping the community builds a big enough repository of stuff....
But I kinda doubt it will happen, especially with a subscription

My guess is that the sub will come with tiers. What you talk about here (and I wholeheartedly agree) my guess will only be available on the priciest tiers. And I am not convinced those maps will be manegable to search through to find something relevant cause no way will ever the whole dnd-community agree on naming and tagging rules. "But my map is happening inside a mountain som I tag it mountain, but it looks like it's in a forest because of magic, but really it is all happening in outer space! Oh, and I'm naming it "map"."

The push to standardize all classes into a singular progression model was a mistake. Fifth Edition is already the easiest version of D&D to get into, vastly simplified from 3.5, while still having more personality than 4th Edition. The only subclass progression that always bothered me was the ones that get their subclass at 2nd level. Clerics and Warlocks gaining their subclass at 1st level makes sense, it's a part of the backstory that led to them being that class. Fighters, Rangers, etc. gaining their subclass at 3rd makes sense, because they are working their way to that specialization through their experiences. But Druids and Wizards getting theirs at 2nd is odd. The magic they use would either be intrinsic enough to their character that they would choose a subclass at 1st level (Circle of the Moon, for example) or it would be a oart of their progression in learning the art, matching the Fighter and such on their journey of mastery, resulting in a 3rd level subclass (Evocation Wizards and their shaping of the destructive forces of magic come to mind).

You could make the same argument for clerics and warlocks getting their subclass at level 3. They are working towards gaining a closer connection with their god/patron so that’s why they gain their subclass powers at level 3, while already having some powers before then from that source in the form of spellcasting. The logic actually breaks down harder with some martial subclasses: how was a fighter working towards becoming an eldritch knight if they did not cast a single spell before suddenly getting to cast multiple at level 3? How did a soulknife rogue sharpen his psionic powers when they did not even have any until level 3? In either case You’d have to shoehorn in an explanation rather than just play with the character concept and backstory You had in mind. All classes should get their subclass at level 1 to avoid stuff like that.

It’s kinda already been unlocked. Modders are refining it and are almost done with a proof of concept by making avernus. You’ll at least be able to make campaigns or play what others make.

Its actuality pronounced "si-gul" i know thats stupid but it was naned after a city in the game and they have expressly stated that the g is hard not soft.
    Really dumb iknow.
On the topic of vtt, if you go in fot this subscrption based system youre a fool. Buy the books. Play in person like a real role player.

I heard that it's supposed to be pronounced like that, but in all honesty I think it's such a dumb name so I pronounce it like I do out of protest. 😆 After all, language is controlled by the masses so if enough of us pronounce it the better way then they'll be forced to conform. 😈

Try playing a game or two with Roll20. There are a few others, but that's currently the big one. VTTs are a great tool, but with Hasbro-Wizards doing their best to monopolize TTRPGs, I have no doubt they're going to try to nickel and dime you to death with Sigil.
